Bird clubs, anyone?
Is anyone involved in any bird clubs in their area? Today there was an article about keeping birds in our newspaper in the pet section (*gasp* it's 99% of the time exclusively dogs and cats!), and it mentioned this bird club close to me! I had heard of it once before but forgotten about it. The website is www.PEEPclub.org, and I'm hoping to get involved since it sounds really neat. They're putting on a big bird fair next week and there's even supposed to be a black palm cockatoo there so I'm really hoping I can go!

I wish I could see the black palm cockatoo. I've researched bird clubs in my area and didn't find many. Being in California right now all the bird fairs and shows are getting canceled due to the exotic new castle disease. But now that you mention bird clubs I think I'll reresearch them.

Whats a "gang gang' cockatoo....I'll have to look that one up.....sounds very interesting.
We have a bird club here...called The South Jersey Bird Club. I have been wanting to call them to find out about membership and I think now that the subject has popped up here, I just may do that.
Jenny...I'll let you and everyone know what I find out.

Well I researched the local bird club in my area and it sounds very educational and fun. I'm thinking about joining. They have toymaking parties, guest speakers at the meetings, holiday parties and picnics.

We have a bird club out here. It's called the Las Vegas Avicultural Society. I've been wanting to join it for a while, but haven't gotten around to it. I think they hold the birdmarts out here. I bought Hayley from the birdmart last year. They have them every 6 months, but the last one was cancelled because of the newcastles disease. The next one is october 12, and I can't wait. The last time I was there, Joe Krathwohl was there. He trains birds for shows and movie. I saw one of his shows once. I think he was selling his bird training videos.(By the way, thats a good video if you want to train birds.) He had his Black Palm Cockatoo with him. I probably would have been more excited about seeing it if I wasn't about to buy Hayley. I know what a gang gang cockatoo is, but I've never seen one in person.

Frankly, I've had some bad experiences with bird clubs. All the members of bird clubs I have spoken to have either been old fashioned ( for example: they tried to convince me that parrots need grit ), or only about breeding. I have yet to find one that focuses mainly on behavior and nutrition of our companions.

That's too bad PionusPassion. I haven't joined the P.E.E.P. one yet but from their website and the article in the paper about them, it sounds good. They do rescue and focus on education and all sorts of stuff. I'm hopefully going to take my little cousin and my neighbor to the bird fair Sunday and it should be great! Wow Courtney- a gang-gang and black-palm at a bird store???? I can't believe that! Aren't gang-gangs like one fo the rarest 'toos in captivity? Thats' what I thought anyway, and I know they've got to be extremely expensive. Oh, and you should think about starting a bird club, as well as Crazeemama. You'd be suprised to find out how many people woudl want to join. I used to think that there werent' too many people in Kansas with birds, but after working at the clinic and goign to a few other bird fairs I've found that there's actually alot more than I thought.

Hi again, I got to go to the bird fair yesterday and thought I shoudl tell you guys about it! It was really neat, there were birds EVERYWHERE as well as bird toys, cages, and other supplies. I got to see tons of parrotlets, lovebirds, canaries, a few cockatiels, lots of amazons, greys, adorable conures, finches, doves, macaws (including Illiger's!), a couple lories/lorikeets, cockatoos (Black-palm, Ducorp's, Major Mitchell's, and the more common kinds), eclectus, and a few others. It was kind of funny, I stopped and was talking to a female eclectus and the breeder came up and started explaining that females are red and males are green adn taht that is called "sexually dimorphic" etc. etc. etc., and when he was finally done my dad said "Wow, that's exactly what my daughter was telling me over there!" The guy was really suprised, and then started quizzing me on what kind of parrots were on this manzanita stand! It seems like all the adults started talking to my dad about birds and he'd always have to tell them that he knew nothing about them, that I was the one who begged to come and was "owned" by six! That got a tad frustrating, but it's understandable I guess. Amazingly the only thing I ended up buying was a $1 raffle ticket but I won a one year subscription to Grey Play Round Table (even though I don't have a grey)! Anyway, I'm really glad I got to go, I learned some new things, and it was great.

Bird shows, I want to go!
Jenny, I would have gone crazy at that bird show! I'm such an addict now, I know I wouldn't have gotten away with not spending a small fortune on toys, food and whatever else I could grab. I guess we can add this affliction to the "Multiple Bird Desire" disease.
