Budgie is weak and cant fly anymore

Hi,

I have two budgies, one male and one female. Just today i found when i went to clean out the cage that the female(holly) budgie was on the bottom of the cage, normally i cannot hold her but today she allowed me to pick her up. she tried to fly a couple of times but either flew into walls or ceilings or crashed into other objects. She felt really light, lighter in weight than normal so i got a plate and poured some seed to see if she would eat. she did a little but not much.

At the moment i have her in another cage with towels and a heated pack and she is sleeping. i have a little sugar in her water to give her back some energy as advised by another site and some seed.

Should i be worried, is there anything wrong, majorly with my budgie. Any advice would be fantastic

Thanks

Yep, I agree with Jennicat. May be something minor but birds are so good at hiding major illness that I wouldn't take the risk. You really need to make an appointment with the vet ASAP.

Please let us know how she does.

I don't mean to sound gloomy, but this happend with a finch I had. For no reason this just happened and I tried the same things you have and she recovered once, but the second time she died. I don't know why and I couldn't take her to the vet, she was a finch and so not tame and tiny so the vet couldn't have done anything anyway. This also happened to a cockatiel of mine when I ran out of seed and was feeding him and his "mate" only veggies and fruits with some sunflower seeds and millet, he aparently hadn't been eating the veggies and fruits so he got sick, but he did recover once I got seeds. I wish you good luck with your little one.You need to get your budgie to the vet. I know everyone said that, but I don't know what else to tell you.

Please take your bird to the vet ASAP. I lost a parakeet last week and his symptoms were similar. He had an appt. with the vet the following day but he never made it. Please don't hold this off.

I know this post is old but I registered only to share this notice of mine regarding my budgie and an air ionizer.

My budgie was very weak, perching puffed having a diarrhea. I had no idea what happened to her so suddenly when I realized I plugged in the air ionizer about a week ago back then. I thought that couldn't be the cause but decided to give it a try and unplug it. After few days my bird was back again. Then, after about a month of pause I thought the ionizer was a coincidence so I plugged it back again (that was about 15 days ago…). On Friday (today is Monday) she was showing those same signs only this time it got even worse. On Saturday she was barely standing on her feet when I was warming her up on the top of my receiver puffed with her left leg in fist. Since yesterday she’s showing signs of recovery. Today she begun preening her feathers so I can tell she’s definitely feeling better.

I took a picture of the ionizer (Neo-Tec XJ-201, Ionic Air Purifier With Night Light). Look in attachments...

My advice… If you have an ionizer or ozonizer in your home turn it off!

Hope I was of help...
