Question Parrotlet Help

Hi I have a paciffic parrotlet, He started getting sick a few months ago, He is very unstable on his walking and climbing, He will fall over alot. Once he was so bad that he could not even perch. The area I live in dose not have an avian vet so I took him to my regular vet, they thought he had a head injury because he had flown and hit his head,
They gave him Steriods, He showed little improvement,I read on the internet about megabactia in Parrotlets, I was sure this was what was wrong with him so I call my vet and told him the med, that he needed for (megabactia Yeast infection Gastric, In just a few day's he was better, I continued the treatment for 2 weeks and he was fine,
Now he is doing the same thing again! and the treatment is not working for him this time, Has anyone else had this problem, Can anyone help me? I sure thought he was going to die last time but he is a fighter and now he is fighting again, Anyone have a idea what might be wrong and what I should do,He is about 4 years old, Please Help anyone, Thank YOU,
Birdcrazy

I wish I could help you but I have never heard of this before. If I were you I would get on the internet and find out where the closest avian vet is to you and take him there. He needs a good check up with some blood work would be my guess and I would not wait to long either. That is how I found an avian vet for me and he is about 90 miles one way but it is worth it. Good luck and keep us posted...someone may come along that will be able to help you there so keep checking back here.

Ok you said he was falling off the perch. My question for you is other symtoms that are going on that you may not have recongized.
Like have you check his droppings does he have loose runny watery stools??
What kind of steriod did you have the vet give your bird for this as steriods usually do not get rid of yeast infections.

Where do you live at so may we can help with finding you a BOARD CERTIFIED AVAIN VET to take your bird to.

Have you checked the eyes of your bird are they pink or any discharge this will be a sign of a sinus infection at times if this sign does show up. Other things may be wet sneezes, whatever the case even without any outward signs that you can see a sinus infection can also cause a bird to lose its balance.

A sinus infection just like in you can make you not stable at times, does the same to your bird only thing is they need to be able to do this to survive and flying and abilty to perch is a need for a bird.

Falling by loosing their balance can result in a injury to a part of the body be it internal or external.

You say he flew into a window I would hope after that experience you have the little birds wings clipped now for his own safety.

Hitting his head can do more then just this it can wack out the bodys central nervous system, and cause him to start loosing balance and control. Birds really when not in a natural enviroment but a home made one like living in capitivy (our homes) really need the wings clipped for their own safety as the accidents in our home can do worse damage then this but also death.

As for medicating the bird THIS WAS DONE TOTALLY WRONG, ALWAYS have the testing done 1st before you start to med a bird as you really can be giving the wrong thing to the bird and just make it worse instead of better.

Besides having a CBC (complete blood count) done you should have a fecal, culture, gram stain and metal panel done. If the metal panel is off in a bird this can also cause problems. A bird should be seen once a year with a vet anyways no matter what and have a routine check up with all this done to make sure they are still in good health.

Lets give you a for instances my Hahn's has been more aggressive then normal (besides hormones) and shaking his head turns out it is copper and zinc toxicty and I am one who is soooooooooo careful with my guys we are still unsure where he got the copper at. Metal or anything that is off in the body including an infection in the body will cause the bird to have problems.

Be careful also cause some drugs will cause bad side effects.

Here are a few things that I hope will help you.

NEVER MED a bird yourself with over the counter drugs they are much weaker then what the VET will give out and do not do the proper job. Not only this what if you are giving the bird the completely wrong meds for this then you could be harming insted of helping.

If you asked some at a pet store for help on this as to what type of meds to use 9 times out of 10 they honestly do not know and they are no more a vet then you are.

PLEASE make sure you go to a BOARD CERTIFIED AVAIN VET as most vets are like a regular MD to us and do not really know birds that well. Kind a think like this if you get an eye check up you go to an eye Dr for this not a MD as they know eyes very very well right. Well the same thing really applies with birds also most vets do not know enough about birds so you need to find one that specializes in them that is BOARD CERTIFIED.

Here are some sites for you to locate a board certified avian vet in your area if you do not already have one you go to.

http://www.aav.org/activemembers.html
http://www.birdsnways.com/articles/abvpvets.htm

DO NOT allow the VET to give your bird BAYTRIL as this can either give your bird bad side effects (like respiratory system problems) or kill your bird ask for OTHER ALTERNATIVES. A vet that offers BAYTRIL to me is not a VET worth going to. DO NOT be afraid to ask what the VET is doing and why!!

Although this drug is a wide spectrum antibiotic it is also one of the that I know that has killed and brought on many bad side effects that birds will live with the rest of their lives after using this drug.

Stay away from meds that go in the water as 9 out of 10 times it will detour them from drinking the water they need cause the taste is awful. Things added to the water can be a bit on the bitter side and a big turn off for the birds to drink.

If it must go in the water you can try to mask it with a bit of Orange Tang this will help your gamble some that the bird will drink a bit more then before but it is a 50/50 chance unless your bird was brought up drinking things other then water.

I would measure the amount of comsuption of the water your bird may drink since if this is added in, barring of course any bathing they may do out of the water dish.

Just like your doctor has a record of information on you the vet need on your birds.

Here are some facts on a sick bird:

SICK BIRD
Have you checked the dropping??
Are they loose, runny, watery looking??
If so then your bird has an infection and needs to see a VET.
Marked depression, ruffled feathers, lack of appetite, problems breathing, a discharge from the eyes and nose are all different signs that indicate illness in a bird.

Birds do not get sick over night, birds are food for prey animals so they do not show signs of weakness and being ill till the last minute. This is a preservation response that assures that a sick animal will not "act sick" until it is really sick, and literally dying.
Because of this response they do not act sick till they are so sick they are literally dying

The 1st indicator you have for an ill bird is their droppings.
When they start getting fluffed and not eating you need a VET involved it does not take long without treatment from this stage for a bird to succumb to whatever the illness this is, with treatment from a VET your bird has a chance of pulling out of the infection.

Take the cage you have your bird in put a towel around it with a area to get fresh air. Then take a towel wrap it around a heating pad on high place it under the cage. Lower all the perches so the bird is near the heat, the fluffing up is trying to give itself heat and keep its self-warm. Make sure the bird has access to food and water; move them down to the birds level if they are usually up high.

Think like this when you are ill you want to sleep, stay warm, and usually do not want to eat. This is not good for a bird though as they can only go 24 hours with no food. Does it usually take a trip to the doctor to get meds to get you on the road to recovery, the same for your bird.

Some sites on ill birds things to look for

I cannot stress to you how much this BIRD NEEDS A VET NOW do not wait!!

I agree that you need to try and find an Avain Vet as soon as possible. It can be hard as they are few and far between, but it's so important that our fids receive care from someone that specializes in birds! I hope things work out for you and your little Parrotlet, they are so cute.

Cheers, Tamara
