Anybody have flying squirrels?
OK, I haven't got my little flying squirrel yet (also called a flyer) but I hope to be getting her soon. She's about a year old and is supposed to bond with me well after I carry her in a pouch for some time. She is able to be handled though, just not bonded with her owners right now so she will bond with me. Flying squirrels are little, about the size of a sugar glider, or for those of you who have seen neither, bigger than a gerbil, but not a whole lot. They are cute little things and I can't wait to get her! Any day now! Enjoy my pics, the pics had to be taken through the cage since the woman who is trading me the squirrel for my birds (I was selling my birds before and then this person had a flying squirrel so I wanted to trade), also has sugar gliders and they were out when she took the pics. I'll update with better pics, etc. when I get her!

I have never had flying squirrels as pets, exactly, but I have fostered two that someone else trapped in their attic for 4 months before releasing them. Even though they were caught as adults, they got used to me sticking my hand in their cage and would climb out onto my arm and up my shoulder. I was tempted to keep them as pets, but since they had already been living outside, I didn't feel right taking away that freedom. It was cold when the guy caught them and I kept them until it warmed up. I would love to have a hand-raised flying squirrel, but it is illegal to own them, here, because they are native wild-life, even if they are captive bred. I will just have to stick to my sugar gliders. I know you will love having the little one around, though. They are so pretty and so sweet.

They are so cute! <3 I've never actually owned a flying squirrel but I love them and know quite a bit about their care.

Looks like I won't be getting her. I have to have a permit to own her and my mom doesn't want anyone coming into our house to check it out because she doesn't like unknown people in our house I guess.

I know how you feel... wanted one forever. Found out how great of pets they are and all that ripped out of my hands cuz it is illegal to without a permit. You should check though and see if it is only illegal to own Southern Flying Squirrles (which that one is). Maybe you could get a Northern Flying Squirrel. I don't know much about them, all I have heard is that they have less aggressive tendentcies than the Southern? But I don't know if that is really true cuz I haven't heard Southern Flying Squirrels being agressive. Anywhos there is a variety of different types of Flying Squirrels you could look into that may not be illegal to own without a permit.

It would still be illegal to own a northern flying squirrel here with out a permit. Plust I want the southern flying squirrel, they are smaller and I think cuter.
