Hi!
I just read about you and your American Mastiffs. I live in NJ just outside of Atlantic City and am on Fredericka's wait list. I have heard that it could take up to a year. I can't wait.
It was so good to read about your great experiences. I would love to hear more!
Thanks,
Paul

American Mastiffs Are Amazing
I live in NJ as well, and am currently high up on Fredericka's waiting list for our second American Mastiff. We currently have a 2 year old brindle male named Ralph, weighing in around 175 lbs. Ralph is amazing! I have owned several dogs in my lifetime, and I have to say that the intelligence of the AM is far superior to all of them. Ralph is very nurturing and outgoing, with strangers as well as other animals. He is also very protective when the situation warrants.
When he was a year old, he woke me up at about 1:00 am wanting to go outside. This was a little unusual, but I was so tired that it didn't really strike me as odd. About 5 minutes later he taps his paw on the back door (BOOM!) as he always does to be let in. He comes prancing in all proud of himself and drops a pair of ripped up jeans on the floor at my feet! I immediately call the police and go out to check the yard. I couldn't find the owner of the pants anywhere, but when the police arrived, we found a trail of denim threads going over my fence into the yard next door, and up to my neighbors back door. To make a long story short, our neighbors daughter had been sneaking her boyfriend in the backdoor at night, so her parents put padlocks on their gates to prevent him from getting in the yard. The boyfriend, completely ignoring the 'Beware of Dog' sign on my fence, decided to go through my yard, climb the woodpile, and jump the fence. Bad timing! Suffice to say that the police woke up the parents, and they discovered a pantless young man hiding in their daughters room. If Ralph were of the more violent disposition, he could really have hurt that kid. Can you imagine-- this giant brindle-colored monster comes lunging out of the darkness and grabs you by the seat of the pants! I always laugh when I think about it.

I haven't posted on here for awhile, but this thread is right on time. I have (what I recently discovered to be) an american Mastiff. I have been to many different people trying to figure out if he was a mix or purebred.
My male mastiff was adopted at 4 years old with some serious issues relating less to breeding than to severe abuse. We finally have him turned around and he has become a complete joy in my life. He is a mix of Old English Mastiff and Antolian sheppard.
I did do some research on the Antolian and was less than pleased with what I read. I do believe that there is a standard about breeds, but it doesn't mean that it is set in stone for individual dogs. I think that if you are going to spend money in buying a "type" of dog, doing research is what is going to save you from heartache. I do mean research, research, research.
The american mastiff is a fairly new on the scene, so understanding that is essential. What that tells me, or the average consumer, is that you won't be able to go back generations of a line to check for health issues, or aggression issues. The american mastiff is still in it's infancy, so basically it is a potluck on what you are going to end up with.
I also believe in great socialization in the first stages of puppyhood, so detailed interviewing with the breeder of how the puppy is socialized is what is going to be a deal breaker.
Whatever your choices, to me a dog or any animal is a family member, they are for life. I love my dogs, (I have 4 mixed breeds) whether or not they are purebred doesn't matter to me. I personally think the best dogs in the world are waiting for a chance to love and live, right down at your local pound.
I just had to throw my two cents in on this!
Elizabeth

I have a 18 month old Apricot female American mastiff from Fredericka. I'm hooked on the breed for life!! Valor (the dog) is really smart, very good at deducing things. She is the perfect balance of guard dog without having to worry about what she will do. I had her in obedience training as soon as she had all her shots and I think that really helps. I live in your typical housing plan suburbs and I don't feel that she is "cramped". She sits at the front door and watches the neighborhood. If a person walks by she doesn't bark, unless they touch our grass then she barks. If another dog goes by she only barks at dogs she hasn't met, she never barks at dogs she has met. Our lots are narrow, so we can see neighbors driveways. She barks if they have new company but never at their cars. She must memorize the way the cars sound that belong there!! We got her on Thanksgiving and I had Christmas decorations on the front door and she "bell trained" herself (or us). I would recommend this breed to anyone that wants a nice big dog but has homeowner insurance limitations; this breed isn't blacklisted (nor has it given anyone reason to).

Our family is excited about getting our AM from Flying W. We have been waiting since December for our brindle male. We are expecting for him to be born in either of the early April litters. We had a chance to get a fawn, but decided to wait for the brindle. I was curious as to what made other AM owners choose brindle over the fawn or apricot? We cannot wait to go get him in June. I am glad to read more positive posts about Flying W Farms. Everyone seems to confirm what their website already says.

American Mastiff
I just thought you might like to know that there are a group of AM owners that have a forum on http//groups.yahoo.com/group/AmercianMastiffs/. I think that is the right address. We all have AM's from the couple of main breeders and are always asking questions and giving helpful information out.

Hello, I'm new to this forum and would like to say hi.
I've been reading this thread with great interest. I'm on the Flying W waiting list as well. We're hoping to get a brindle female this summer from one of two litters that are expected toward the end of May.
I'm getting very anxious and can hardly wait.

Am
hey,
i have been trying to convince my parents to let me get a dog for about a year now. I am almost 14 and will dedicate my time and love to this dog. I have done many hours of research on different breeds and i think the AM is the right breed. Some of the problems with getting a dog that my parents have come up with i have found a way past. Such as
my parents problem*we have two cats
my solution -the dog will grow up w/ them & i will teach it not to horass them
*we have a small yard
- extend it into the front yard & have it come into the house (we have a adverage to big house)
*they don't want a fence
-eletric fence
*they don't want to take care of it
-i will (when i set my mind to something i can do it)
*my dad and i don't like small dogs but we don't have a big yard
-get a medium to large dog that doesn't need that much room
those are some of the things that i need to convinse my parents that are all right. Do you guys think that i got the right type of breed for my life style(i am also athletic so i don't mind going for long walks and i all ready pretty much take care of my friends dog)Please if you have any advice e-mail me at babi05grl@yahoo.com
THANKS A BUNCH

Am
hey its me again,
It sounds like Flying W is a great breeder although i don't think i could wait that long for a AM if i convinsed my parents to let me have one. So how can you guys tell if they are a good breeder. Cause every one says that they are the best and have great puppies. Also do they all coast so much like it seems that it is an expensive breed, at least $1,000 for a puppy! other breeds seem to go for half that. Also i just want a good healthy puppy for a pet not to show so i don't care if it is from top show dog line. Like i said before i just want a healthy nice puppy for a pet. please help me
