Exclamation What kinda of hay is for morning & night?

My family has 3 horses here in Arizona.

I know that they all get 2 flakes of hay a day and a mix of some other bagged food depending on ones weight and such.

I need to know the name of the other "hay" they eat besides the alfalfa.

I know depending on the time of day one is for morning and one is for night. Not sure what the alfalfa is for... & I really need to know the name of the other hay they eat.

Thanks in advance

Well there are different types of hay for horses, so in order to find out what it is, you are going to need to contact the person you bought it from.

Alfalfa can make some animals hyper, so I'm sure that is meant more for the day. But generic hay can be fed at any time. In fact, you don't HAVE to feed them alfalfa, but there are a lot of nutrients in alfalfa that regular hay does not have.

I'm not quite sure I know what you mean by 'other type of hay'. Are you talking about haylage? I've never heard of them only getting a specific type of roughage during the day and another at night, sorry.

Do yours get plenty of grazing outdoors throughout the day as well? Two flaps (flakes) doesn't sound very much. Mine gets probably the eqivalent of at least an entire bale in a day, because there's not much grass for him at this time of year.

What kind of horses are they? Do they do a lot of work? How big are they? What are their names? (That last one had nothing to do with your question, I was just curious. )

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Do you mean Timothy hay?

Two flakes doesn't sound like much to me either. Do you know what the bagged feed consists of? I fed my leased welsh pony at least 4-5 flakes per day, I think, it was quite a few years ago. She also got grain and supplements. Her pasture was lush and green so she had lots of that, she was a little bit of a chunk but very healthy and shiny looking. And very fun to ride!

They graze all day long, and there is plenty out there for them. they don't do much work at all haha.

We have one "teenager" normal size [Fancy], a mare who is a fatty lol[Sugar], and a momma [Misty] of the teen who is skinny.

We realized that after suger ate all her food she was going to mistys food area and taking mistys food. Misty is old and a push over, so now we have to lock them down for a few hours during feeding times so they are all eating the right amount haha.

I asked basicly what the other hay consisted off wondering is it simply grass hay because I just got a rabbit, and it needs grass hay (everything says timothy is the best but ehh) and I was wondering if I can use the "not alfalfa" stuff for the bunny too... I know we do give them the alfalfa in the morning... just cant figure out if the other stuff would be anything besides just grass.

Timothy hay is probably what the OP is talking about. You're right, Heather.

You can feed your rabbit any good quality grass hay, do not feed it alfalfa, as it's high in fat. My aunt gives her rabbits orchard grass, timothy hay, blue grass, bermuda grass etc. You can feed a variety.. just make sure it's fresh, and all sticks/ anything that may possibley cause harm to the bunnie is removed.

That depends on your horse's body weight. A grown horse should eat about 12-15lbs of hay a day. Alfalfa oat hay mix gives the best of both worlds. Horses seem to enjoy it a lot.

Good quality hay can provide most, if not all, of the nutrients a horse needs. There are variety of hay (Red Clover, Orchardgrass, Timothy and Alfalfa). Thanks to google
