It depends on what you like. The world is full of pets of all kinds of species that you could choose from. My advice would be to decide what category you like (birds..turtles..fish etc....) and then read up on everything you can about it. Knowledge is the key to a succesfull relationship between you and your pet. Good luck to you!

I'd be wary about getting a bird. If you have a dog that's trained for vermin hunting, the birds could be victims too.

I'd say "No" to the idea of getting a skunk (first of all they're illegal to own in many places) and also I agree with Macassie, if your dog would kill a hamster it'll have no problem killing a cockatiel. My first thought upon reading your post was a ferret, however they do take alot of care and you need to have read up on them alot first, plus I'm not sure how your dog would handle one. There are many ferrets out there needing homes so it should be fairly easy to find one up for adoption at a cheaper price.

Just curious but what type of dog do you have?

And also, are Reptiles completely out of the question?
