Unhappy New Parakeet, Old Cage

Hi everyone.

I am a new member and have joined petlovers for a sad reason. My one year old parakeet died yesterday morning as the result of being eggbound. She'd laid eggs several times before, but I guess that this time was just too much for her.

I've been moping around the house since yesterday, and can't get any work done. I decided to come online and do some searching. After lots of thinking, I'm considering bringing another parakeet into my home.

My dilemma: The cage from my first bird is huge, spacious. It's practically brand new. (One year old). Also, there are several toys available as well. Should I get a new cage for the new bird anyway? Like, will the old cage have a certain scent to it or anything that new bird will pick up on? Please let me know. I'd really appreciate the input.

Serya

Serya,

I'm so sorry to hear about your parakeet.

I don't have any answers for you regarding the cage, but I'm sure someone will come along soon with good info.

Welcome to the board.

Hi Serya and welcome.

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor little girl. It's a very scary thing for me because my lovebird is an avid egg layer, and I have fears that it will do her in. How did you know yours was eggbound?

As far as the cage is concerned, I don't think it a problem for another bird. It's not like the new bird could 'catch' anything either.
