I wanted to get an amazon (either a blue-front or yellow-naped) before I decided on a blue-headed Pionus. The reason why I decided against getting an amazon is because I read that they can be quite loud at times and where we live, we can't have a noisy bird (we had to give away our male cockatiel because our neighbors complained about his noise). I think amazons are so cute!

yeah,...when i went looking and researching for birds, i decided no matter what, i didn't want a amazon....i read that they had a tendency to be loud, go though mood swings, have behavioral problems etc. when i went to the breeder, he asked if i wanted to hold the bird he had will he went to talk to his secretary for a while. i said yes and soon feel in love with the little bird on my finger. later, when i asked what kind of bird it was, he said "well, it's an amazon of coure!" omg...i feel in love with an amazon?!!? how could that be? but lie i said, i already loved him, brought him home and made him part of my family...a momnth later, i brought another one home, and there couldn't be a more perfect bird for me...i love my babies!

Jackie, do you find that the information they say about amazons being noisy and moody isn't all true? I know all birds are individuals and each will act differently, but just as a generalization, would you still recommend an amazon to someone who lives in a condominium?
Are your zons more bonded with each other than to you ... because you got them one month apart? I just got my BH Pionus about a month ago and I'm thinking that if I want to add another FID, I should atleast wait until Rio has really bonded with me. Or maybe it doesn't matter as long as each gets time out alone with me?

well, to tell you the truth, i don't know how easily an amazon would be able to stay in a condo. Mine are both loud in the morning and in the evening and they have a couple 10 minute screaming fits throughout the day. i guess they do scream a lot, but i don't really have any reasons why i have to make them be quiet since i'm planning on keeping them and not moving where their noise wouldn't be tolerated. Jake, my hand raised baby, is not that moody towards people. Whenever you he sees you, he lets you know and wants to be rubbed and cuddled with. He will get a little nippy with sam if they just got in a fight over a toy or something. Sam, my older imported amazon, is very moody. you can have him step up, have to put him down for a second and then ask him to step up again and he'll take a chunk out of your hand. I already have made the decicion to always hold him with my right hand so that my left won't be all scared up for my wedding close-up hand picture....that's only another 10+ years from now lol
Jake is a people person while sam likes to sit around with the birds. When i first got sam, he stayed in his cage all day because we couldn't have him and all the other birds (6) flying around and attacking eachother (we bought species that try to kill eachother without knowing it at the time). he spent most of his time in the cage with his door open for another month. next to his cage was a conure named emmie. they were very bonded to eachother. well, idk, sam loved emmie, but emmie always tryed to kill sam for some reason. anyways, we got rid of emmie which kind of depressed sam and made him calmer. we were eventually able to put him on the tree with jake and berrie but it took another month or 2 before we could trust that he wouldn't bite berrie's (budgie) head off. that's when jake and sam began to bond. i was trying to tame sam, so he got his attention from me, and i still played with jake. then it came to a point where jake wouldn't bite me, but he wouldn't want to step up or get his head scratched if sam was looking or wasn't asleep.it's almost like he wanted to cheat on sam behind his back..lol. since sam's accident however, jake is no longer being preened by sam since sam isn't allowed on the tree and so jake and i have grown closer. i can't even pick him up now cause he always sticks his head down for me to scratch. sam has also grown closer with me. i think it has a lot to do with the fact that he knows he needs me to hand feed him 4 times a day and to wrap him up in a towel and carry him around the house because he can't perch on a finger (he used to be the independent one)
well, i'm not exacty sure if i answered your questions, but if i didn't, just ask again....good luck

Thx for all the info, Jackie. I'm not sure if it would be a wise choice on my part to bring an amazon into a condo right now. My neighbors are generally very good. I've been living here for 10 yrs and my neighbors only complained about my male cockatiels noise level (screaming) when he lost his mate and he became depressed and was in mourning. He started to call for her (screaming) all day long ... and this went on for 3 months until my neighbors complained.
We are planning on selling our condo and buying a house (maybe in 2 yrs or so). Maybe I'll wait until then.

Rio is amazing! She chirps when we are all in the room with her (I guess she's trying to talk?) but it's a very soft, low, sweet sound ... not loud at all. She is active and loves to play with all kinds of toys. She is not timid or afraid of anything new. When I put a new toy in front of her, she doesn't hesitate to inspect it and play with it. Although she is quite active, she is not a high-maintenance bird (like Bijou). With Bijou, I have to constantly watch what he's up to whenever I let him out. He is so active and he is contantly trying to find something new to destroy .
I really have to watch Bijou closely because he'll try to chew anything (phone cords, curtains, blinds, books, paper, etc.) he finds. Rio stays pretty much on her playstand or her wicker basket and plays with the toys I give her, or she'll just happily stay perched on my arm while I watch TV. Blue heads are great!
P.S. Rio doesn't talk ... but maybe because she's very young (4 months old).

Sophie is amazing also. we used to take her to petsmart to see the baby white cap and baby blue head. The white cap would look at her lik"MOM!!! What are you doing here?"" And Sophie would look at the white cap like it was crazy. The blue head was very active and I fell in love with it.

Bonnie (Pionus Passion) came to our home for a visit with her Orange Wing Amazon, Loki. Wow, what a majestic, beautiful bird. He felt at home here during their visit. He was not aggressive with Marcel, they got along. I was afraid to let him near my small birds and they were terrified of his size.
Anyway, he is a little shy about going to someone strange unless Bonnie tells him it's ok. What a smart bird. He didn't scream the entire time they were here. But, I know Bonnie will attest to the fact that she says he screams in the morning and evening...it's just what they would do in the wild.
I would love to get an Amazon, they are gorgeous, smart, talkative. Right now, I have my hands full and my flock of 6 needs my attention.
My heart, of course, is partial to Pionus Parrots. They are so adaptable to any situation and are smart, loving, mainly quiet, etc. (All the things they are described to be).
Marcel is my constant buddy.
