Smile Any Basenji Help Appreciated

My boyfriend bought a 5-year-old Basenji. It is a kennel dog and was used for breeding up until now. We will keep it in our apartment starting this summer. We haven't picked it up yet. I have heard and read that basenji's are mischievous dogs. Does anyone know about these "barkless" dogs? If so any information or techniques in training an adult would be greatly appreciated.

I raised two schnauzers, but my parents became attached to them so I let them keep them at their house. My boyfriend has a golden retreiver that he has raised from a pup. It stays at his parents house in the back yard because at our apartment there is a weight limit on pets. The basenji will be our first dog together. The major difference between it and our other dogs is that we started training them as pups. I'm just wondering if there are any tips on training an adult dog for apartment life. Thanks!

wow... props to you for taking in a puppy mill dog.

that takes a lot of dedication and patience, and someone with a very big heart!

Here are some links that may help you with your process:

It's at least a start for the long road ahead.

Good luck to you and your big heart!

Its not the breed that you're going to have problems with, its the fact that is was a puppy mill dog. I've always heard good things about Basenji's, they are smart but energetic, so a lot of activity will help.

Give him lots of love and time. He will be scared and unsocialized. Talk to rescue groups and other people who have experience with puppy mill rescues for training tips.

Good luck and god bless you!!

Thank you...
This poor little guy's living conditions were pretty bad and I know the Basenji breed are very clean animals. When we first saw him he was covered in mud and muck. There were two other basenji's in the kennel with him. Do you think crate training him would be appropriate? There will be times during each day my boyfriend and I will be working. Since he has been standing and living in such a dirty kennel, will it be harder for him to learn not to go in his crate?

Here is a picture of him off of the breeder's website. Sorry it's not a very good one. He is a sweet dog.
