Exclamation Help: New Dog!!!

I got a new dog, a shih-tzu, she's a year old. I have an 3 year old Pek. He's really friendly, like he just wants to play with her, but she nipped at him when he got near her.

What do I do? Right now I have them separated. One is in a room with a baby barrier and the other dog is on the other side of the barrier, each can see the other. I put some of his toys with her and left her only item (a bandana) with him.

How can I make the introduction fast and simple?
She's nice, or seems like she is.

How long do I have to wait to see if they go or don't go together??? She's really cute and all, but he's my number one choice and if she doesn't get along with him, well then, I want to know soon, so that I can return her to her previous owners.

First I wouldn't take your dogs chews away and give it to the other dog. Those are her toys and she'll likely fight for her territory.

Speaking of territory get them out of it... Your house/yard I mean. It's always best to introduce on ground where both are strangers. That way there's no fights for territory.

This takes time. So be patient. If you can get them to behave out of the house it's possible to get them to behave in it. It just takes time patience and praise!

Try not to seperate them and definitely don't give toys from onr dog to the other - buy them both several new toys and preferably remove the old ones for a few days.
If it was just a nip then they will probably be fine as long as you stay calm and exude confidence. Don't admonish either one too much to begin with, keep youir voice and posture happy, calm and non-threatening.
If it gets to the point where they are really fighting - drawing blood etc. - every time they meet then may have to reconmsider. It really depends on how much time and patience you have to devote to mixing with them.
Our third dog into the house took over a year before we could leave them in the same room alone. Our fourth dog walked in as if he had always been there and the rest just accepted him.
Patience is the real key - good luck.

We just got a golden retriver not long ago. He's 4 mths old... But when we brought him home to meet my shih tzu, 2 yrs old, he started to dash into her and grabing a part of her fur and skin with his mouth. So what we did was we had to slowly introduce the shih tzu to him. But it took quite a while as he kept wanting to do the same thing... But we separated them by putting one of those see thru cages and when we were ard we started to introduce them again.. slowly, in a few weeks they started accepting each other.. Most impt is PATIENCE.

Wishing you luck,
