Help with fence jumping dog

i have a german shepherd that jumps the fence whenever it is not blocked by anything but its making it difficult for our family to access the backyard since I have to put so many things in front of the fence to prevent her from jumping. This is the type of fence we have.

specvinylfence.com/wood-chain-link-gate.gif

She only ever jumps from the gate door never from any other part of the gate. I have seen her jump and she uses the top decorative part of the fence as leverage to get over.

My dog is a german shepherd female.

I wanted to know if anyone has this problem and has fixed it. We have tried many things and the only thing that works is blocking the fence. I have read about using pvc or adding to the fence but I haven't been able to find if it works on metal gates all the gates it describes are about dogs climbing wooden gates.

Any information on how i can fix this would be great.

My first concern is prevent her from jumping becuase there are familes who walk their dogs and she will go after the dogs if she jumps the fence. She is only outside when we are not home and is inside when we are home.

EDIT: I would also like this information because recently she jumped and ran away because there was someone in our neighborhood popping fireworks and she got scared. I know tomorrow i will keep her in all day.

There are many dogs who are "escape artists" so you really to make sure it is tall enough for her to jump, maybe you can just make a secured door for easier access at the backyard.

Hmm this one is tough. I've dealt with owners who have dogs that dig out from under fences and are worried about the dog getting lost, so we suggest the Tagg GPS tracker, but for this situation since it's stopping the dog from escaping in the first place, it may be worth looking into building a custom metal fence or door.

Is there a local hardware that may provide this service? It seems like the fence needs to be higher in length in order to stop the dog from jumping. What is the current height of the fence?

I would recommend adding a portion to the top of the gate that slants in (sort of like the barbed wire you see at the top of fences for junk yards and such), but it seems likely that you just need a taller gate before that will even work. My friends have a rottweiler that is and escape artist, and the only way that they could keep him in the yard was to build a 24' wooden fence with the added in-ward slant at the top. If the gate is simply too short, your dog will climb it even with the addition. Also, chain-link is the worst thing for a fence-jumper because they can be climbed. You may want to get some of those privacy strips that slip between the links because they make it harder to climb. Otherwise, I would just recommend replacing the chain-link with wooden slat gates and position it so that the horizontal beams are on the outside. The biggest thing is to make your gate as tall as the fence that she is not jumping. The difference in height is making her escape easier.

Good luck!
