Terrible accident

It happened that my canary lost its wing by an accident with a cat. Veterinarary said it'll live and adapt. But I'm still stressed out about the bird. Would there be any advices how to decrease post - traumatic stress to the bird? Maybe anyone got similar experience?

I'm sorry to hear about your canary. How is the birds recovery going? I'd imagine there must be serious healing needed. How is it's emotional health?

You may need to modify the cage to help it get around. I'm thinking it's balance may be off for a time, perhaps forever. Good footing may be needed.

If the cat is still visible to the bird, that may cause extreme stress. Perhaps keeping kitty out of the birds room may help. I have seen birds that have adapted well to loss of foot/beak/etc... Not a wing, though I'm sure they're out there also.

I am sorry to hear your bird had a major accident. Actually it is great that the vet feels she'll survive and I commend you for getting your canary right to the vet so she had a chance of survival.

I agree with macawpower in that you might want to keep the cat out of the bird's site. Also keeping your bird warm and secure. After a trauma like she has experienced I have read it is good to keep their cage area warm - a tad more then you usually would.

I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your canary. I'm very concern about your bird's emotional status. How its feeling? I would suggest you to keep him away from cats since they are the reason why your canary got its traumatic experience.

aww im sorry. good thinking by takeing the bird to the vet. just keep it comfortable and warm like you would always do. and birds like a little bit of sunlight during the day so keep the room a tad lit up at night for ur bird.

Again sorry, hope your bird gets used to it. Darn cats.

the great news is your bird will recover, but you'll have a tough time adjusting going though the enotions of knowing the damage, how it will function, but its no different than us as parents waiting for a child coming out of surgery. You'll worry for a while, follow the process and ten the bird can do what it can and it willl surpi=rise you a friend of mine has one little bird without a wing and it has learned to fly in small circles. so hang on, people are rooting for you and at least the bird will reover

My friends little sun conure ran into a wall long before she adopted him, "Tweak," and the wing was surgically removed, but I guess he's doing 100% he can fly in small circles arooound his favorite person so I'm told. I must visit my friend soon. Let us know how our bird is adapting k

I'm sorry to hear about your poor birdie. I agree with above suggestions, keep him warm, cat out of view, maybe even cover the cage partially so he feels a little safer, having only one wing may make him more skittish. Also put his perch really low and if his food/water dishes arent' already low I'd suggest moving them down. That way he doesn't have to stress himself to get to anything and it may be hard to anyway with only one wing. Hope he recovers just fine and I'm sure he will adapt, animals are amazing and adapting to things like that.

Wow, that's sad to hear; I'm so sorry! Just try not to scare the bird with anything, especially the cat. Good luck with the bird's recovery!
