Comfort Dog

One of the homes I work in has this sweet golden retriever. I love her very much, and up until my foot went bad, always took her for a walk after I was done working. She only sees me once a week though, so you wouldn't think she'd get too attached.

Today I have been very upset about something. I'll spare you the details, but at one point while working this morning, I gave in to my emotions and just sat down on the floor and cried. (I was alone in the house, except for "R") R was in her crate two rooms away at the time. I was crying very hard, and she came hurrying in. First she put a gentle paw on me to let me know she was there. When I reached out my arms to hug her, she squirmed onto my lap, wrapping her paws around my neck and licked the tears off my face. We stayed in that embrace until I was able to calm myself enough to stop crying.

I can't even tell you how comforted I felt by her doing this. I know animals often comfort their loved ones, my cats certainly do. But, as I am not her family, I never expected this dear sweet dog to come and offer her love to help me feel better.

Dogs can be a lot more free giving of their good will than cats. Kaylee is everyone's best friend once she gets to know them. My brother in law's golden is an absolute sweetheart too.

That's so sweet special. My animals comfort me too when I am low, it's such a wonderful thing. I bet it really helped you.

I'm so you were so upset, I hope that whatever it was upsetting you has gone now! You know we're all here for you anyway......

That's really sweet Special. It's amazing at times how empathetic animals can be. I'm glad she was there for you, when you needed it most.

If I sat on the floor crying, my pups would more likely be trampolining off my head. Sometimes it'd be nice to have a sweet and gentle dog around......

I'm sorry you were so upset, special, I hope everything's okay. I'm glad Mrs Cutie Poochie was there for you when you needed a hug. I love animals for that, how they innately know when you need them in that way.

I know I've said this here before, but I was completely moved by a rescue rottweiler who was so kind to me in my time of need, after finding one of the dogs I took care of a lot, and loved so much, dead in his kennel one morning. All the dogs were so gentle to me that morning, when they'd normally be bouncing all over the place in their excitement to have company at last - but this one rottweiler stopped me from leaving her kennel by putting her nose on my hand. I dropped to my knees next to her and cried and cried, and she just rested her head on my shoulder and waited for me to get back up again. I'll never forget her for that. She didn't know me from Adam.

Dogs only ask for someone to be there for them, and in return they give us something back that we can't get from anywhere else. Absolute unconditional devotion, whether it is deserved or not. There isn't a word that can describe them for that. I just wish that everybody could reciprocate that level of love, and appreciate them like we all do.

Oh...that golden retriever is full of love. It's so amazing how dogs can make us feel good...and he's not even yours! It sad to know that some people are ignoring their dogs when they are actually the ones who can make us happy.

I never said anything about this dog being ignored. She is a very sweet dog and has a nice life with a loving family.

The temperament of the Golden Retriever is a hallmark of the breed and is described in the standard as "kindly, friendly and confident".[10] They are not "one man dogs" and are generally equally amiable with both strangers and those familiar to them.[6] Their trusting, gentle disposition therefore makes them a poor guard dog.[15] Any form of unprovoked aggression or hostility towards either people, dogs or other animals, whether in the show ring or community, is completely unacceptable in a Golden Retriever and is not in keeping with the character of the breed and as such is considered a serious fault. Nor should a Golden Retriever be unduly timid or nervous.[6][14] The typical Golden Retriever is calm, naturally intelligent and biddable, with an exceptional eagerness to please.
Most Goldens need plenty of exercise, such as dog agility.

Golden Retrievers are also noted for their intelligence. The Golden Retriever ranks fourth in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, being one of the brightest dogs ranked by obedience command trainability. These dogs are also renowned for their patience with children.
