Best Dog Food?

Hi!

I've been having trouble picking out dog food for my husky. She's 16 weeks old. When I first got her from the breeder she told me "Give her Ol' Roy's", so I did for a while. Then about three weeks after I had her, I took her to the vet. He tells me Ol' Roys is "horrible horrible garbage!"; after some research, on my part, I found that he was right. He told me to feed her Science Diet instead. Now I've spoken with a few people on this and they're telling me that Science Diet isn't that good. So I'm completely confused. I don't mind paying extra for good dog food. I just need to know what the top brands are, and why I should feed her that.

Please help me!

Thanks in advance!

Kuja,

I suggest that you read several of the threads here in Feeding Frenzy. There is great info and many experiences to found in these threads.

I hope I don't offend you as I don't mean to...But what kind of breeder did you get your husky from that suggested Ol'Roy?......That food is total garbage and most people with any knowledge of dogs knows it's complete garbage....I'm stunned that any breeder would recommend that you feed it to one of their pups or any pup for that matter.

Thumbs up Suggestion for feeding your husky pup

One of my dogs is half husky and half lab and she was incredibly picky and had a lot of digestive problems with foods that we tried. I have a friend who has a husky malemute mix and he is picky too!

Both of them seem to like foods that have fish (which makes sense since because of where the breed originated - their ancestors probably ate lots of fish).

My husky mix likes the Flint River Ranch Trout and Potato food and it has been fantastic for resolving her digestive problems. She is a big dog (95 lbs) and is 15 years old and still doing great for a girl her age!

Good luck with your pup and congrats on taking the time to do some research and realizing that Ol' Roy is awful!!!

The list John Olexa posted pretty much covers it LOL. There is a ton of stuff already posted on this topic in the feeding frenzy section. It explains what to avoid and look for in a good food. I'll post the link to the main place to get more info this way I don't keep retyping the same stuff and boring everyone else

here ya go.. hope this helps :

unfortunately, not enough breeders are responsible IMO and take the time to research what is best and just go with what is cheap and easy to get. Friends of mine just took home a pup from a so called gpood breeder and she had hook worms YUCK! It is buyer beware in the world of purebreds

This is why I personally do not care for Science Diet. It is junk food. I have listed ingredients of four of their dog foods and what is wrong with them.

Natures Best Adult Beef
Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Wheat, Chicken Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat , Beef, Peas, Carrots, Soybean Oil,

Adult Chicken and Rice
Chicken, Brewers Rice, Rice Flour, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Soybean Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Chicken By-Product Meal, Animal Fat, Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor

Advanced Protection
Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat , Flaxseed, Chicken Liver Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Dried Carrots, Dried Spinach, Dried Grape Pomace

Large Breed Lamb and Rice
Lamb Meal, Brewers Rice, Rice Flour, Ground Whole Grain Wheat, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Corn Gluten Meal, Cracked Pearled Barley, Animal Fat , Chicken Liver Flavor, Soybean Oil

What is not good about most of these ingredients (from Natura Ingredient Tool);

Chicken By-Product Meal
Chicken byproduct meal consists of the dry, ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines

Corn Gluten Meal
Corn gluten meal is a low ash source of protein and acts as a urine acidifier in CAT FOODS. While not the best quality source of protein, the use of corn gluten in small amounts offer preventive health benefits for cats. In addition, unlike dogs, cats do not usually show signs of allergic reactions to corn products. Corn Gluten meal in dog food is cheap filler.

Animal Fat
Animal fat is a byproduct of meat meal processing. The origin of the contributing animals is never known, and the resulting oil is very low in linoleic acid -- an essential fatty acid that is important for skin and coat health.

Brewer’s Rice
Brewer's rice is a lower quality rice product that is missing many of the nutrients found in ground rice and ground brown rice.

Soybean Oil and Soybean meal
Soybean oil is low among vegetable oils in linoleic acid. Soybean meal is poor quality protein filler. Many dogs are allergic to soybean products.

Sorghum
Sorghum is a member of the grass family; its leaves and stalk resemble corn but it does not have ears. Although sorghum is good source of carbohydrates, it is low in digestibility.

Rice flour
Whenever flour is part of an ingredient's name, the grain has been processed and some (or all) of the nutritional value has been lost. Frequently these flour ingredients are simply the leftover dust from processing human food ingredients.

Wheat and Corn
Very allergenic in dogs

I am listing 3 of the many top dog foods recommended so you can compare the first ten ingredients of Science Diet to the first ten ingredients of a decent super premium and decide why so many of us do not choose to feed Science Diet to our pets.

Canidae
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat, Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil,

Innova Dry
Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Meal, ground barley, Ground Brown Rice, Potatoes, Natural Flavors (quality chicken broth and a secret blend of herbs and spices), Ground White Rice, Chicken Fat, Herring

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul
Chicken, turkey, oatmeal, whole grain brown rice, chicken meal, turkey meal, whole grain white rice, chicken fat, potatoes, cracked pearled barley

I've had great luck with Nutro. It's what my vet first recommended and my tucker has been on it since.

Yeah I figured if my vet which I've been going to now for close to 10 years recommended, it should be good enough. The fact that I have to feed a hungry 80 lb dog means that the price sits well with me too.

This has been so useful, I've recently taken in the sweetest abondoned pit, but she has Demodectic Manage, so I've really been concerned about making sure her diet as well as her medical treatments work best for her...I have a much better idea of what to avoid now... Thanks for the insight..

HOLD ON A SEC!!! lol

ok, so I was reading through the GOOD FOOD list and found that not a SINGLE ONE listed was one that I had EVER heard of!! Then, I was reading through the BAD FOOD list and was appaled to see that beneful was on the list - THAT is what I am feeding my pup! And all the ads you see for puppy foor - purina, etc - all on the bad list - now I know enough to NOT feed him Ol' Roy - but.... None of the brands listed on the good food list are sold up here - so what do I do?? can anyone give me a website that sells puppy food, that's a GOOD food, that I can order off the internet, have it delivered here and NOT cost me a fortune? I don't mind ppaying money for good dog food - but up here CNA's do not make the most money in the world.. any help and info would be GREATLY appreciated! Now I'm going to finish the thread!! thanks!
