Change name?

I'm imporing a Schutzhund titled male from Germany. A German Shepherd of course, but I don't really care for his name. His name is Dodo, lol, and I don't want to be in public calling him that. Is there any way to change their name, to where they respond to a different one. He is 5 years old.

Just give him a new name. Be consistent. He will listen, especially when you call the new name and offer a treat at the same time. To get his attention to the new name, use a clicker and the treat at the same time while you call him the new name. Shis should not take too long, German Shepherds are very smart. Don't call him Dodo any longer, which is quite popular in Germany along with 'Fritz' or 'Schatzi'. I agree Dodo is a stupid name.

Question: Why do you import a German Shepherd? (Schutz=protect, hund = hound [dog])

Congrats on the new addition when you get it, you'll have to post some pictures.

I met 2 GSD's that were titled in Shutzhund. Very, very intelligent dogs. My professor also used them for training other police dogs. It's interesting how different German GSD's look from American GSD's.

I import Schutzhund titled dogs to improve my breeding program. I know you can find Schutzhund titled Shepherds here in the U.S. , but I wanted another import.

I also have Schutzhund German Shepherds.

The name he has must stay. That is not to say, you can't give him a 'call' name of your own. The registered name allows him to be recognized by his bloodline. The breeder also stamps his kennel name on the pup this way.

Just pick a new 'call' name and use it. He'll come to answer to his new name.

Yeah, I knew that, but I just did not want to call him Dodo. We've talked before. I have a German imported female, with her Schutzhund 1, BH, AD, and KKL2 titles. Dark sable coloring out of working lines.

Oops. I have to beg your pardon. It didn't click when I posted this reply who you were. Of course you know that! Do you have any photo's posted of this new male yet?

A friend of mine is thinking about a 6 month Czech line ***** from Eurosport. Lovely deep dark sable, bloodlines with Grim/Galant on one side, and Titus/Car on the other. Nice combo IMO.

I'm dreaming of puppies in the not so far future.........lmao

I don't have pics posted. It isn't 100% sure that I will be getting him, because I've found another male that I have interest in. Beautiful dark sable. Comes from Schutzhund 3 titled sire, and the dam has her Schutzhund 2, and IPO3. His first litter he sired, all the male pups are going to be trained for police work. He is almost two, and his breeder thinks me may pass OFA excellent on his hips this time, which is pretty rare in this breed. She has a black male who is older, OFA excellent hips, that produces great pups, but the police where she lives did not want her to sell him because of what he can produce, along with his hip ratings. She said only 3% of the Shepherds get excellent on their hips. The dark sable male on his pre lim, had good hips, normal elbows. He is a very tough dog, a lot of drive, and sired a very good litter. I'm also buying two females from this breeder. One is solid black out of working lines also. Very tough female, definitely Schutzhund material. She is also a proven breeder and passed OFA good hips and normal elbows. The other female she said is the toughest one she has ever owned, hasn't had a litter yet, but did have OFA good hips and normal elbows also. That dark sable male I told you about, his mother is a Czech import, and father is DDR. Awesome dogs, I'm pretty excited to say the least. There is good linebreeding between the dark sable male, and the solid black female too. I'll show you some pictures of them after I get them. I might be picking all three of them up not tomorrow, but next Saturday hopefully.

I'm with you on calling him something different. If you can't change it, like Becky said.. At least he could have a nickname. I have a feeling you'll get really weird looks calling him Dodo.

I always had good results with choosing a new name that sounds similar to the name the dog is used to. The woman that took Piggy Sue decided to call her Abby, since Abby has the same ending as Piggy. You could call him Frodo, after the Lord of the Rings character, he probably wouldn't even notice the change.

But I agree with the other posts, just be consistent with what you decide to call him. And be sure to post some pictures when you get him.

Same here. My girls original name was Tangy. I changed it to Tandy. No confusion here. As long as it sounds similar, he probably be ok and will listen to it.
