Sometimes i find my dog trying to dig on my bed or couch. Its usually while she is trying to get comfortable to lay down. She digs and then did the circle thing and goes to sleep. Its not something she always does but I was wondering what the heck my dog is doing???

My dog does this too. It reminds me of a cat making their bed, so we just always atributed it to her being around cats when she was a small pup. Looks like we were wrong and now I'm wondering too! It is a funny sight to watch her "fluff" her pillow at night, LOL.

Your dog is making the bed more comfortable for herself. Dogs have a natural instinct to dig a hole to sleep in, this way they have something up against their backs and noone can sneek up on them. My penny (female golden retreiever) likes to dig the covers to oneside and then puts her back to the lump she made. That's my two cents worth. :)

Hana does that too, usually on the couch with me right next to her. She is 95#'s and when she accidentally digs up a toe it hurts! She makes a funny sort of laughing sound while she is doing it. She does not like the throw pillow and will literally throw them on top of me to get them out of her way. It is very comical. . .well except for the ruptured toe part! LOL.

LOL Molly. I get toe digs too. Daquiri has a Jekyll/Hyde thing going with our pillow. One day she literally drags it to her place on the couch and lays on it. The next day, she hates it and throws it into the floor with a growl-then pulls it (with her teeth) into another room where she can't see it!

My Chi mix has a really elaborate ritual at times. She'll use the top her head as a balance point and digs on her pillow with both front paws going like crazy. Then dig with one paw, then dig with the other, then circle around, maybe dig some more and lay down. My other dog, also a Chi mix, just picks a spot, and flops. A lot of this also occurs on my bed at 5 a.m..

Diego digs everything into comfort, funny watching him dig snow into a heap then laying on it.

I just refer to that behavior as nesting LOL they are just looking for the best most comfy spot

This is the norm for Magnum. His own personal Bark-A-Lounger... He will make one turn, flop down, do a long grunting sound, lick his lips maybe twice, then lights out.

Well that makes a lot of sense. I was wondering why she kept look back at the pillow beside my head, when I moved it over for her she wasn't too happy. She was prob hoping she could lay her back against it. Oops!

Magnum looks SO comfy!!!
I have to keep my bed covered with two extra blankets I don't care about because Bullwinkle has "nested" the hell out of two expensive quilts! He MUST turn in circles at least 4 times, dig, arrange whatever toy or bone into the perfect position, all before he will actually lay down. It drives me NUTS sometimes because inevitably he is doing this in the middle of a really great scene in a movie I am watching or where the murderer is discovered in a good mystery show on TV. Great Danes are NOT see-through!

Magnum looks so comfy in his chair. LOL My dogs also dig before they lay down. Pippy gets under the blankets then digs herself a bed, Robin digs turns in circles digs some more then will lay down. Tonka digs and then gracefully falls to where hes going to lay. Brody has a fear of being left when she sleeps i think either that or she just loves me so much she HAS to cuddle but she will get as close to me as she can and dig in the bed next to me then plop herself down with her head across my neck, chest, wherever she can get depending on how i'm laying.

I think just about every dog does this, its cute though! My family's chihuahua, Kit does this to get comfortable. She will dig, turn around usually 3 times and then lay down. My beagle, Shiloh, is an outside dog and he will dig depressions in the ground to sleep in, usually its to cool off in the cool dirt, but also because it is more comfortable to sleep in the depression than on flat ground. Wolves do this in the wild to give themselves a better sleeping area and to cool off or stay warmer depending on the weather. The weird thing is that it seems almost all canines who do this turn around 3 times, I think its just the perfect number of times to pat down the dirt to keep it soft when its in the dirt, otherwise the animals doing this in pillows just have the instinct.

That is an awesome picture of Magnum. He blends right into the couch! Wonder what is up with three times circling around. LOL. Aiya likes to make a "tent" with either her blankets or my pillow in the middle of the night. I lose a lot of sleep over such things! :) Just give me a pillow and blanket and I am good to go!

My 14 yo fox terrier/whippet does the same thing. She'll dig and dig then pushes the bedding or blanket or pillow around with her nose, only to dig again. She circles 3 or 4 times then finally lays down and goes to sleep. She's been doing this since she was 12 weeks old. I have been told that is a "nesting habit" that some dogs do. She also goes one step further. She likes to bury nuggets of dogfood in the blankets, then unbury them and eat them. I've jokingly said as she's done that "are you playing hide and seek KaCee?" To this she looks at me, wags her tail furiously and then eats it, goes for another piece and repeats.

My pekingese-shih-tzu, Kady, does that too! She always digs in the couch, and I always wondered about that, since none of my other dogs have ever done that. Another odd thing she does though, at night when she's sleeping on my bed, she'll scratch at and lick the wall! What's that all about?

My dogs always do that before they go to bed. I think it's the equivalent of us tossing and turning when we first get in bed to get comfy. My dogs like to bury their bones too. They'll dig and dig to cover them up, then uncover them to make sure they are still there.

Yaaa!! mine does that too. She wears herself out scraping her bed to death and pulling at it this way and that. After she finishes she is really panting hard (nightly exercise regimin maybe lol). Anyway usually she does this just before lights out and as soon as i turn them off she gets up from her freshly made (dug) bed and goes to her other bed in the walk-in coloset. Go figure!!
