I noticed my dog limping about a month and a half ago so I took her to the vet. The vet determined that she had pulled a muscle in her leg and they put her on Deramax. Well as soon as she started taking the deramax, she started losing control of her bladder. She was also consuming a lot of water. So I took her to the vet again and they put her on Phenylpropanolomine. At first I was only giving her a half a pill two times a day and it wasn't helping. So the vet told me to bump it up to a whole pill twice a day. At the same time I took her off Deramax because the limping had stopped. She's been doing really well for the past six days, but last night she had an accident. Her water bowl was empty and it was full before I went to bed. She's consuming a lot of water these days, and she's hardly eating a thing. I read online that Phenylpropanolomine could cause a decrease in appetite. But I can't understand why she's drinking a lot of water. FYI she's an older dog..and she's also inside. She pretty much sleeps all day, so that's why I can't understand why she's thirsty all the time.

Hi Dawnhowe.....

I'm by no means an expert on veterinary medicine, but here's what I DO feel safe advising:

If I were you, I would return to the vet (or go to a different vet) and have them run a full geriatric panel. (A very complete blood test). I think that would be the most logical place to begin, as it will show if something inside is out of whack.

An increase in water intake can be the result of several different things, from Cushing's to Liver disease. It may that there's an issue that needs to be addressed that has nothing at all to do with the limping/meds issue. Given your dogs advancing age, this seems even more possible.

Please post back and let us all know how she's doing and what you find out!
Hug the little one for me!

I've been doing a lot of research on Deramaxx lately, and it's been very discouraging. Several articles are on the net about how Deramaxx has led to kidney failure. So I called my vet and spoke with the front desk lady and she said that was true..but rare. And they give blood tests before they give them Deramaxx to make sure they don't already have kidney problems. So I told the lady that my vet didn't do any such blood test, nor did she discuss with me the possible side effects of this medicine. She told me I'd have to speak to my vet when I come in.

So I came in today, and my vet seemed on the diffense regarding my comments about Deramaxx. She said that all drugs have side effects. I told her that I would take a limp leg (which is why she was taking the Deramax) over kidney failure any day. Kidney failure will kill her. Regardless the vet should have discussed these things, I trusted that she knew what she was doing.

And you know what..it may not even be due to Deramaxx but it didn't happen until she started taking it...anyway..they're doing a uranalysis and some screening ..it said NSAID1 CBC, renal liver chems, UA. Not sure what that is.

And she gave me an antibiotic..Simplicef....which is used for skin effections in dog. What the hell?????????? What is WRONG with these ignorant people. If they kill my dog.....I swear.....I'm going to do whatever i can to make their life a living hell.

While you wait for the tests and if your dog is still drinking lots of water than try giving her Pedialyte from the baby isle. It will hydrate her better and she'll get more vitamins in. Good luck with your baby

Yes, there can be major side affects and the drug is fairly new so how can they say it is a rare occurance that there are problems with it! YIKES!!!! She should have explained the risks to you first IMO

How long has the dog been on it ?

What exactly did they say the injury was... or is it really arthrtis and Hip dysplasia? Did they do any x-rays before making there diagnosis to begin with.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I personally don't trust anyone any more when it comes to my dogs.

If you call 3 different vets you'll get 3 different answes. That scares the poop out of me that's for sure!

Are you by chance in NJ I can recommend some pretty good vets here also University of Penn is awesome and a lot cheaper than most as well
