Hi! I have a rottie mix that has an extra "toe" of sorts on her back foot. She has dewclaws on both back feet as well, like most rotties do. But by one dewclaw, she has a small extra pad and nail that grows out behind (facing her tail). does anyone know if this could lead to problems? We keep it trimmed and it doesn't seem to bother her at all, just looks kinda crazy.

Hi Molleri~

I really don't know much about this, but wanted to toss in an opinion....I would think that the extra claw would not be a problem unless it was continually snagging on things causing it to pull/tear. If the vet said it was alright, I'd just leave it be.

My Coco has dewclaws, too. (Never had a pet with dewclaws and I didn't even know what they were until I got Coco, lol). I was told that because Coco is already 3 years old, I should follow the advice I wrote above. I was told that at Coco's age the dew claw has already fused itself to the bone of her leg, or something like that.

Thanks, Maria Rosa. Yeah, I didn't know rotties had dewclaws on the back feet until I looked up some info on the net. But I've never seen one with 2 dewclaws on the back foot :p

Molly came from a shelter and she doesn't have an appt with our vet until Friday, so I'll see what he says. I was just wondering what everyone else thought.

I don't know much about this either but I don't think it can cause problems since it doesn't bother her andd she doesn't bother it.I think you should talk to a vet about this though just in case.
