Had 2 blue heeler mixes that went down really fast about a week ago. Showed signs like parvo BUT.... would stand over water bowl w/o drinking.
Both died within 18 hours of each other--- third mix breed(larger) came down with same but no loose feces. Force fed eggs and gave Pen G and she pulled though.
Any Ideas on what this may have been. out of 12 dogs these three were the only ones affected.

:( I am so sorry for your loss. What you have described sounds eerily similiar to my 2 pugs a couple of years ago. We had a jerk in the area throwing poison to dogs. The vet couldn't do anything. They were too far gone. In our own back yard. They died within a few hours of each other and acted like you described. Best of luck with your other dogs.

Dehydration is a sign of parvo... if you think any of your dogs have had parvo, make sure that every dog you own has been vaccinated against parvo.
Just a question, if you thought your dogs had parvo, why didn't you take them to the vet?

Well if everyone was up to date on shots, the chances that they had parvo are slim, since parvo/distemper is combined in one shot and very commonly given.

That's really interesting....I learned about toad poisoning in my toxicology class, but the vet that taught it said that he had never seen a case in 30 years.

Sorry for your loss. By chance are you in Florida as I read that is where this species of toad is very common?

Let me get this straight, you forcefed eggs and administerd your own Pen G injections to treat a sick puppy whose litter mates had just died suddenly. No veterinarian involved, despite parvo having been suspected. And the choice to not involve a vet was based on the fact that the vet had been out your way one week before and everyone seemed healthy at the time - ONE WEEK BEFORE. Then to make up for the dead puppies, you bred the parents again, not having given given the female one heat's rest. I don't know what the rest of you folks are thinking, but this sounds to me like this is either a puppy mill, or a grossly misinformed pet owner. Sorry Wolf, but your whole story left me with a very poor impression. If I am wrong (AND I PRAY THAT I AM WRONG), and you are not running a back yard breeding operation, then you have a great deal to learn about canine care and welfare. rw

Ok let me correct a couple of things here!!! I am going in order of your post here. Number one the two that died was littermates but not the third sick one. Vet was consulted, i was following his advice. He done a nacropsy on the dead pups. No i did not breed the parents i didnt own either one of them! Nor would i ever have because they are mix breeds , and deffently not with out 2 heats inbettween. As for the rest of it i am not an idiot, nor am i a backyard breeder. As for learning i do everday, but i do have my animals best intrest at heart.

I do not own either of the parents of the pups that died or Ryu is husbands friend that has them. If you read you will knotice i didnt know that the fm had given birth to another litter of puppys.

I do the best that i can with my animals and strive to learn more everyday, An work side by side with my vet as well where my animals are concerned.

Between yours and your neighbor's puppies and who's breeding to who, I am quite confused as well. Whatever the case, because I am completely confused, I will concede that perhaps my intial impression of you as a backyard breeder is inaccurate. And I believe you that your intentions are likely good and you truly care about your dogs, but despite this, I still stand by my observation that you do indeed have a great deal to learn about canine care and welfare - and apparently so does your vet!
First and foremost, did it ever occur to you that it would be a good idea to spay and neuter your dogs so that they are not getting pregnant constantly or impregnating your neighbors dogs? I read some of your old posts and you stated that you were into rescue work. If this is true, then wouldn't you be wouldn't you deem it more worthwhile to adopt cute little puppies from shelters overflowing with ones that are in need of homes, rather than keep allowing yours and your neighbor's dogs to keep pumping them out?
And let me be very clear that if your vet told you to force feed eggs and give Pen G injections to your sick puppy; and led you to believe that the rest of your dogs were completely immune to parvo because they were vaccinated; then it is time to find another vet!
Look, I am not trying to insult you or looking to cause trouble. For the sake of all your dogs and other dogs in your community, I just don't want you to continue to be so misinformed. And please, get your dogs spayed and neutered. rw
