I have FIVE little Hermit Crabs and I plan on getting two more today. You see, each one of them were rescued from either a pet store or a Walmart where they were NOT being cared for properly. Now they are home and safe with me. I love them so. I used to have three more: Jacque Henri, Belle Fleur, and Veronique Antoinette...but they passed away while I was visiting rehab. Those poor, poor things. I miss them dearly. :(

We have hermit crabs! We have had them for four years now!

We had 2 but both died as soon as they started coming out of their shells. We had plenty of other shell sizes for them to crawl into. We don't know how to keep them alive, so never bought more.

How ironic. I have just one little guy and his name's Arthur Timothy. There's just something about the little hermies that calls for an extra boost in their name. :p

I would be very happy to help anyone with their Land Hermit Crab questions and conserns. I own and operate a land Hermit Crab rescue here is central Florida. I have many partners within the crabbin world when I keep updated with all of the news discoveries and findings regarding Land Hermit Crabs and their care.

They are not novelty, easy to care for throw away pets.. but a type of pet that requires specific conditions and care in order to keep them for years (like 4.:) Hooray on that!) Sad to hear about Hermit Crabs dying from lack of care... very sad indeed. We have 40 rescued Hermit Crabs from all over the country from people who had no clue what they were doing and they were giving up. I attempt to educate first.. but sometimes when someone learns of all that is involved they decided they are not the pet for them. That is why I now have a rescue.

here is our site...http://www.geocities.com/hermitcrab_rescue/

Email us at.. hermitcrab_rescue@yahoo.com

hope to hear from some of you soon!!!

Please get more than one.. they live in large groups (100 or more) in the wild and are very very social creatures.. he will be much happier if you bring him home with a buggy. It would be cruel to have one living by his lonesome. Just some unsolicited advice.:o

 Cruel?! Is it really that bad? I have just one (although I am planning on getting another) and he seems pretty content by himself right now...

LOL... it is just a very well researched topic and fact that since they live in large groups, they are happier with pals..

Of the many people that I have had contact with, who have sick or dying crabs, half of those were writing to me with single crabs with no housemates. My two newest rescues were single crabs that were not thriving.. now they have molted and are just as happy as can be.. the one bigger one has a very very close pal he hangs with.

Whew. That's a relief. It does sound like he'll be happier with a friend or two, though, but he's pretty small. Does it matter if his new pal is bigger or smaller?

Well I would attempt to try to fin tanks mates that are about the same.. they don't have to be exact or anything but comparable.

For us, we have large and Mediums in the 56 gallon and the smalls and micros in a 30 gallon.... so as you can see in each tank there is still a variety of sizes but within range of eachother. We have not had any aggressions or anything and it has worked out very well.

Thanks for the advice! I'll probably just choose the most active one. Although I was hoping for a size difference, preferably smaller. (So it is just more like a family. :) - Smaller ones are new.)

As long as the new guy is active.. you can get away with a smaller crab.. I wouldn't go as far as micro but smaller should be ok.. as long as it is spunky!:D

Of course! The ones with spunk are always the most fun. :D I'm planning on getting him (or her) a week from Monday. I can't wait!

He definatly sounds like an aggressive crab. The main way to correct this issue is by feeding him extra proteins.. like fish and meats. When we come in contact with aggressive crabs this is what we give them...

Feeder Fish, crickets, raw Salmon and raw ground beef. Follow up with some calcium heavy items like egg shells, shrimp skins and cuttlebone all ground up and he sould be much better.

There is always a chance of finding aggressive crabs.. usually due to stress and/or prior conditions, treatment in the past. Fact remains though.. Herrmit Crabs live in large groups or colonies in the wild and thrive best with at least one tank mate. 3 is usually the best number... working in odd numbers for some reson works out best.

He needs treatment for his aggression.. it is not his choice to act this way... or to be alone. We have had to date 2 aggressive crabs.. that were under treatment for a few days and are now perfectly fine.

Also, a another note.. other than stress or past effects from mistreatment or pet store conditions.. but they also sometimes get aggressive before they molt. Make sure he has plenty of correct size shells to pick from and start some protein in his diet and he should come around where you can introduce a tank mate or two to him.

Now as far as the pet store that you have mentioned that has not cleaned the tanks in 3 or 4 YEARS??? and there are dead crabs littering the tank??? Please get me the name and address for the pet store that you are speaking with and possibly a phone number so I may get with the administrators of Crabstreetjournal to correct this issue immediatly. That is cruel and unusual and must be taken care of now.. that is neglect and abuse and I caould never walk out with out trying to do something or say something.... so please get me some more info and you can email me privatly at hermitcrab_rescue@yahoo.com and help these poor crabs.

Thank you!

HI! I have emailled the store in question and here was their response...

Hello Jennifer,
We received your e-mail that you sent in regards to the hermit crabs.
We did take your advice, and have gotten the care information from the
hermit crab website that you supplied. This information has been sent
out to all of our stores so if they carry the hermit crabs they will
have this information. We would also like the hermit crabs to live in
a
good healthy environment!
Thank you for making us aware of this problem.
