View Full Version : White Squirrel
We placed a plastic trash can outside the back door and filled it with sunflower seeds. We thought it would be easier than having to trapse to the garage everytime we filled the squirrel feeder. Within days it had a huge hole gnawed in the top. Today I found the culprit :-)

I love squirrels, but I have never seen one with this light of coloring...maybe not albino but very light. I've seen a black one once, but they are rarer in the Northeast than in other places. We have the grey ones all over. They invaded my attic last year and my dad used peanut butter to lure them into have a heart traps so we could patch up the hole...14 in all.

my dad used peanut butter to lure them into have a heart trapsYou lost me here... I know...I know...it's not too hard to lose me....LOL. But, what is a heart trap?
We have lots of squirrels, red and grey, but never seen a light one. The grey one's are mean to the red one's and usually win when it comes to a boxing match. They sound so cute chattering at each other, but I know they mean business and wish they wouldn't get so upset. That one looks real chubby & healthy too... :D

These are cages that animals walk into and there is a pressure sensitive bar that once they step on it the cage closes. They aren't hurt and can be released elsewhere, in this case in the park less than a two minute walk from my house. It's the type of traps that the Humane Officers leave in houses on Animal Planet. It's the safest way I've found to get them out, if there is a safer way than that I would be interested to know. :)

That is a first for me too....I don't recall ever seeing a white squirrel before either. We had a white deer here one time and it was totally awesome. They say there is a white turkey around here too but I have not seen him yet but sure would love to!!!!! We have the gray and red squirrels here too Magnum... That is a really sweet looking little squirrel there Gina....I bet you were amazed!
I've seen this little guy quite a few times in my yard, and he's the second one I've seen since moving to Texas 3 years ago. He's not albino (which was what I though initially) as he has black eyes. But I've never had the opportunity to take his picture before today :)
I was amazed....what a little sweety. But mind you I'd love to see a white deer!!!

He is a cutie. I love squirrals too. My grandpa had a "pet" squirral at our old house that he was able to hand feed. They are such intelligent little creatures and VERY chatty. On break time at work I sit outside and just listen to them chat away. I wonder what the fuss is all about. I went to college in Rock Island, IL, and they have black squirrels all over. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
I don't think I've ever seen a black squirrel.
Where I work (on a uni campus) the squirrels are very tame. I always have a bag of pecans and some dried bananas in my bag. Every break I go out and feed them. There's baby, spot, zorro and mama....but mama is the cheekiest, she often sits in my lap when I feed her. At first I was a bit scared but as long as you don't make any sudden movements they'll not bite!
I also have a blue jay I feed, he flies right down next to me every time I go out and takes a nut, such a funny little thing as he makes noises as if he's trying to tell me something :D

The squirrels at my grandmother's house used to be tame too. I could hand feed most of them, I spent most of my summer sitting out with them and taking pictures...now since I'm not there as often only a few come around and will cling to the door to get food but won't stay on the stoop to eat it anymore

That is just great - never seen a squirrel like that before. You are so lucky to have them right there in your backyard.
