Cockatiel Found, with band. Can I Find Owner?

This morning a cockatiel landed on my 3rd
floor apartment window ledge here in downtown
Washington DC. We got a good sized cage for
it, and it seems fine and calm but I want to
get it home.
Can I trace the owner with the numbered
band it has?
Should I post flyers?
Should I contact Avian Sanctuary (in Virginia)
or other places that can trace the band?
I called the DC Animal Rescue but they were
no help.

yes post flyer and also put up ads on places like toolady.com cockatoos.org birdmart.com some one might be looking for him on line.

I'd think that you'd have a hard time tracing the owner by the band, since most people at least with birds like 'tiels don't pay attention to the numbers and letters on it. I'd definitely post flyers around, and post them at vet clinics, pet shops, bird clubs, and as many other places as you can hopefully with pictures of the tiel and any identification marks that are helpful. The average tiel owner isn't going to go to extreme measures finding the bird like a macaw or cockatoo owner might, but of course there's some who will, it's just not quite as likely. Also, clip the birds wings so this doesn't happen again, if you haven't! And I forgot to mention, welcome to parrot.com! It's great to have new people and their birds here!

Put up flyers and ads in the paper. Also check some websites to see if you can find a lost bird.

Also do not let people know the band number. Ask the person who thinks they are the owner what the band number is to them.

You could possibly find the owner by calling around to different vets and find one that does microchipping. I have had on of my birds chipped and plan to start on two others providing they are big enough for it. You may get lucky if they scan the bird for a chip, if it has one you will be able to get name address and telephone #.
