Since I do not have the wonderful opportunity to photograph as many dogs as I did while in San Diego we will attempt a Dog Du Semaine (Dog of the Week).

This week's Dog Du Semaine is the Shetland Sheepdog. Obviously since I and my immediate family have had shelties and sheltie mixes over the past 31 years I am very fond of this breed. If bred well, the Shetland Sheepdog is one of the most intelligent of dog breeds that is very willing to please and obey. They make excellent agility and obedience trial dogs because they are easily trained and so smart. From my experience they are not heavy shedders (not compared to Bullwinkle!) except twice a year when they lose their dense undercoats and then that comes out in sheets almost. These dogs are barkers though! Shelties also have a tendency to chase cars if they are not properly trained. One thing I have noticed about shelties over the years is that I have met more and more high strung, neurotic and nervous shelties. This is from their popularity increasing and therefore BYB's and puppy mills are trying to exploit that fact. If you are interested in this breed and want a purebred you had better do extensive research into the breeder. Shelties need extensive socialization as puppies because they are instinctively very wary of strangers. Also from my experience you can't go wrong with a sheltie mix either. These are long-lived dogs, averaging 12 - 15 years, although only one of mine didn't make it to 16.

Hi Jo,
I am so happy to see this topic back! Really really missed it.

As usual the animals are just beautiful and pictures are great. They sure look like they would shed to me, but I guess it is all relative huh?
The last set of pictures look more like collies to me, are they possibly the mix sheltie breed you were talking about?

DLaura,

No...these were definitely shelties, well within the standard height. They were brothers and very beautifully groomed and healthy. They were obviously well bred because they did not display any of the temperament issues that I have seen in poorly bred shelties. They also had nice shaped heads, coats, and their ears were perfectly tipped. A beautiful pair of brothers! :D

they are gorgeous! they do look like collies, with the exception of their size, i thought collies could get to around 70lbs or more.

What beauties!! :D I love shelties!! You are so right Jo on the breeding. I have come across quite a few with social problems, and it is so sad. We took in a beautiful male that was going to be euthanized. He was orginally purchased from a breeder in SD by his owners, had his voice box removed, matted, and was freaked out at the sight of people. My groomer out there had an awesome place that was beyond the norm for grooming shops. He took one look at Zipper and immediately said that he would love to have Zipper spend time with his 2 Huge Dobes. He said human socializing sunk it better when dogs teach them. Every day I took Zipper to Kane and Abel for socializing classes. They did an outstanding job and Zipper's entire outlook in life was renewed. :)

Magnum, Voice box removed! That is so sad. I am right there with you on dogs being better abled to socialize another dog. It is amazing to watch. But . . .

Jo, as always your pictures are beautiful. Do you have a special camera? My pics are always poopy! I too missed the dog of the day! Thanks for bringing it back.

Unfortunately if you look at the sheltie rescue sights many of these poor animals have been "debarked". Any person who doesn't know that shelties are barkers should never have gotten one in the first place!! That is one of the first things you learn about them. This is one of the breeds that has been almost ruined by BYBs and puppy mills. It is so sad because they are just outstanding, wonderful dogs when bred well!!

Magnum that is very touching about Zipper! You gave him a second chance at a wonderful life! :D

Molly - I have an idiot proof Sony Cybershot DSC V-1. It is a very user-friendly camera. I have an excellent Olympus 35 mm that I haven't touched since I got this one. Once I went digital it has been hard to go back to film - LOL!

Aww, I love Shelties! I'm fond of them too, 'cause my aunt had one before they had to put him to sleep. Buddy was around 12 yrs. old when they took him to the vet, & they found out that he had cancer all over his body. He was put to sleep a few months ago. Beautiful pics anyhow though! :)
