I had to get out of the house yesterday and just get some air. Took the dogs and cruised over to Hollywood Cemetery. I just love that place! It was designed in 1847 and there are graves of 3 presidents and many other famous people. Anyway I took this pic for my friends here at petLovers.
This is the famous cast iron dog that watches over little Florence Bree's grave. It was purchased from a merchant in Richmond back in the early 1860's after Florence's brother kept bugging their father to buy it. It had stood out in front of the shop until her father finally broke down and bought the dog. Sadly, Florence succumbed to scarlet fever just prior to the Civil War and during the war her father had it placed at her gravesite to protect it from being melted down for confederate bullets. The dog has been there ever since watching over little Florence's grave. Stories still circulate around here about how this dog supposedly moves around on the gravesite, how it's eyes follow visitors, and how it's barks are heard late at night. People are always leaving little things at the dog's feet and for Florence. Hence the Easter ribbon around the dog's neck.
