We gave both our dogs a couple pig ears each this past weekend. Our big dog had diarrhea for a day or two and then was fine; however, our dachshund has had persistent loose stools. He seems otherwise fine and is drinking water and still playing & being active. I'd like to try something over the counter to help firm up his stools but don't know what to try or in what dosage. Does anyone have any advice on this? Has anyone experienced the same result after giving pig ears?

When I was younger, some treats like pigs ears and stuff like that (I don't know what they are) upset our dachshunds' stomachs. Diarohea and that. We just stick to giving them the biscuity type treats.

My dachshunds are both miniature and can take 1/2 tab as needed for diarrhea. I hope it helps.

Hi everyone....this thread is a few weeks old, but I wanted to throw a few websites out and warn against giving pig ears and rawhides as treats.
Rawhides (I know this one from unfortunate experience) can act like sandpaper going through the digestive tract of some dogs. I gave Bootsie a rawhide once, and afterwards we were in the emergency vet. An x-ray was taken and I saw for myself how irritated the lining of her stomach was because of rawhide chews.
As for pig ears, I've heard from several people that you shouldn't give these because they are known to cause pancreatitis in some dogs.
Maybe not ALL dogs are badly affected when given these two things, but I've read enough about the negative expeiences to never want to give them to my own dog.
As far as meds for diarrhea are concerned, Pepto should be ok, I think. (Not a vet, not even a tech, so please always call your vet before giving any med to your pet. If you call and ask the receptionist she will likely know or can place you on hold while she finds out from the doc).
The following websites have some guidelines for dosages, as well as some cautions about pig ears and rawhides.
Hug the lil ones for me.....hope all are feeling good now!!

Interesting links Maria. I too am not a fan of pig ears for the reasons you discussed, plus, if large enough chunks are swallowed, they have the potential to lacerate the bowels. rw
