I was taking a shower today, and I happen to LOVE Bath and Body Works products and I noticed on the back that it said " This finished product is not tested on animals". Does this mean that the un-finished products were tested on animals? I hope not, because then I will never be able to step into a store that I really love. Or at least untill they stopped doing this.

Draper, I'm sorry to say, what that means is, Companies can say there cruelty free and not tested on animals solely to there finished cosmetics & toiletries. Meaning what it says, the finished product was not tested on animals. BUT!! if these companies have any products at all with any synthetic chemicals in them, they DO need to rely on material suppliers or laboratories to do any animal testing to make sure the product is safe. Sadly this is a legal requirment by the FDA!!!
If synthetic ingredients in the product have not been tested on animals then the product MUST HAVE THESE WORDS ON THEM:
"WARING-- The safety of this porduct has not been determined"

What they do is shave hair off animals and apply the product and look for any signs of burns or a rash.....

Yuck!!! That is bad enough, but then the poor animal has to sit in a cage it's whole life, alone, no playing in the sunshine, getting hugs.....ack!!!

I was afraid of that. DAMN! That means that I can't shop at Bath and Boby Works. I looked at the ingredients on the bottle, and since some of the names are longer than the alphabet, it is pretty safe to assume that they are synthetic chemicals.

It could also mean that one of the products they are using has been around for a few years and was tested back then to make sure it was safe but isn't anymore. I had the same exact question and there's a couple different answers to it, IMO.

Is there anyway to find out for sure?

I wish there was a number to call, I just looked on my products and none have a number, or maybe write them a letter?

Only trouble there is with every new batch made they have to test. I don't have any ideal how much of what make what. lets say they make enough to make 10,000 boxes, some where along the way there going to have to make more. So starting from scartch, the whole process starts again, including the testing , they can't take a chance on the new batch, being the same as before....... OR put the warning on the lable. "WARNING-- The safety of this porduct has not been determined"

Just because they had no trouble before, don't mean it won't in the future

That's kinda stupid. As an example, if they tested coconuts out on animals (I know, not realistic) and realized that was safe, would they have to test it everytime they got a new shipment of coconuts?

I have been reading and thinking over alot of posts sinse this thread has been opened and I have a question for you John. Do you read and act on if needed every single thing you eat, drink, bathe with, shave with, every shirt, pants, coats, hats, shoes, boots, etc...you know what I mean by now. I think what you do is a great thing for all animals who have been abused in any way shape or form. How does a person stay on top of it? There are so many things that are "off limits" so to speak, if a person is really going to be dedicated to this cause. Just like draper bringing up the bath and body works products.....(one of my favorites too by the way draper) Just wondering how you stay on top of things?

Most is not hard at all. Food is obvious, clothes are pretty easy too.

Products can be tricky! For the most part if they don't say it wasn't tested on animals..... it was. Does every product I use free of animal testing,? I doubt it! I try as hard as I can, but I'm sure theres stuff I use thats animal tested, at least till I find a replacement

But to answer your question, yes I do "act on if needed every single thing you eat, drink, bathe with, shave with, every shirt, pants, coats, hats, shoes, boots, etc"

Like I said food & clothes are easy. Products takes a little research. Once I find something I stay with it.

they use chemicals for a lot of the stuff, and any time you mix chemicals theres always a chance for a reaction even if it hadn't happen before.. and given the fact if something happens to just one person your talking millions of dollars in lawsuits..... what to they care about testing it on animals

That's really stupid. Do you happen to have a list of all bath products that aren't tested on animals? :)

Don't forget about make-up! I will never forget the pictures that I saw of a rabbit with "burned" eyes because they dropped mascara in its eyes.

I don't wear make up so that takes care of that problem! ;) But yea, a list of that would be good too. :)

What does it mean when none of the products you use made the cut? I thought Suave and Cover Girl weren't tested on animals, but I guess I was wrong. :( Maybe I'll start selling Avon so that I can buy their products without difficulty (I live in a small town so no one here sells it). Anyone interested in buying from me? LOL!
Take care,
Dawn
