My new puppy has diarrhea from stress and changing foods quickly, since the breeder was feeding him purina and I feed my animals natural balance. I read that you can give pumpkin to your dog for diarrhea and I started to and his poo would get a little more formed but then after he ate his food it'd start again. Am I supposed to give it to him with his food like you can with rice? Also how much am I supposed to give him. Hes a shih tzu so he probably only weighs about 4 lbs.

Hello,
I wanted to let you know that I had fed my terrier mix purina at home when i got her out of the shelter. She responded very badly. The vets thought she had parasites. So once you can rule out coccidia/giardia and other parasites your right to think maybe it's an allergy. So i switched to nutro and natural balance both still gave her diarrhea. I did the elimination diet. No more dog food for a a couple of weeks. I gave her rice, boiled chicken, yogurt, pumpkin (a couple of table spoons) once a day. Her diarrhea stopped after a week. Until one day I gave her cooked oats. She has bouts of diarrhea right after that. So after another week I went out to find a dog food that was natural without oats ( solid gold) she responded nicely started to gain some weight. She was thin because of all the diarrhea. Some dogs have sensitive stomachs as well. She couldn't process any human food what so ever. Her food had to have no additives or preservatives and definently no oats! So once i stuck to dog food that agreed with her there was no going back. Alot of times its the grains in the food and purina definently did not agree with her. Good luck.

If your doggie is having consistent problems with diarrhea, I'd suggest taking him to the vet instead of giving him pumpkin as a home remedy. This could be a serious symptom of more than just changing food if this has been going on for a while.

Sorry to hear about Shih Tzu. :( Since the problem started again after he ate his food, then I would suspect the food is the main problem. Check your Natural Balance ingredients and see if it contains any ingredients that may be causing the problem. Oat meal/rolled oats, Yucca, Tomato Pomace, wheat (usually causes skin irritations).
Boiled chicken and rice are great to get the pup back into proper digestion, but in the long run it does not have all the nutrients needed for maintanence.
Please keep us updated on this because it is very helpful for others to know what has worked for you. ;)

I does contain tomato pomace and oatmeal.
Tomato pomace is the mixture of tomato skins, pulp, and crushed seeds. This is an inexpensive byproduct with the potential for pesticide residues in discarded tomato skins, which are the largest component of tomato pomace.
On the oatmeal, it is used as a filler, but is a good source of carb. energy. Some dogs can have loose bowels from oatmeal, so this may be the culprit.
You might want to check around and see if you can get a kibble that has no byproducts. I know some people that feed Natural Balance and claim to have no problems, but they have large dogs. There a quite a few kibbles out there that are holistic and contain 100% human grade ingredients. Good luck and keep us updated on what you find out.... ;)

I looked at the natural balance web page and the one particular food of the natural balance I'm giving him has it....the rest don't. Maybe i'll try a different one with the better stuff in it...didn't think one brand would have such a big difference between their foods.

Great news!! My Poodle is on Innova and does wonderful on it. She is on the Innova Senior and I love how it contains the Glucosamine and the Chondroitin. I use to supplement her diet with the liquid form, but the Innova is so complete for her dietary needs. Good luck in the switch and I hope your baby continues to improve. ;)
