The dogfighting ringleader in SC last year got 40 years and a $150,000 fine (not that he can pay it). Something like 41 counts of animal cruelty and one count of assault and battery with intent to kill.

Unfortunately, his ~50 pits (including 8 just-born pups) were housed in the SPCA until and during his trial, as evidence. obviously not adoptable dogs, as they were bred and trained to fight. So the shelter had to put down adoptable dogs like mad to keep room for these dogs, then spent an entire morning after he finally pled guilty euthanizing all 50+ of them.

David Tant, accused of breeding and training dogs for underground fights will spend the next 30 years of his life in a cage.

David Tant, labeled by prosecutors as the No. 2 breeder of fighting pit bulls, submitted a guilty plea Monday two days into his jury trial.

Tant faced 41 charges of criminal animal fighting and one charge of assault and battery with intent to kill. Many of these charges were dismissed as part of his guilty plea, and the most potentially serious — one count of assault and battery with intent to kill — was reduced to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

While the final sentence was a small portion of the 205 years faced by Tant. He received a total of 30 years in prison — 10 for creating the booby trap that injured the surveyor, 20 for four counts of criminal animal fighting.

Yeah, that's the dirtball I was talking about. I followed the case closely, and was not happy they were granted a change of venue. I'd like to have been present to observe his trial.

The charges were lowered because he pleaded out. The original sentence was 40 years and $150,000 fine, perhaps it has been subsequently lowered.

It is very common to lower both charges and sentences in exchange for a guilty plea. The had him lock, stock and barrel (pardon the pun), so I can only imagine that the solicitor's reason for accepting a plea bargain was due to the huge problem caused by all those dogs in the shelter.

The ABWIK charge was because his property was booby-trapped. A land surveryor tripped one of his booby-traps and was shot by a rigged shotgun.

Talk about a scumbag.

30 years is a loooog time! 40 would have been better, but given other sentences for abuse, 30 years is pretty good.

In my teen/ early 20's I use to get in a lot of fistfights, one time the guy pressed charges (something you didn't do in my time) but any way the judge gave me 31 days in the county jail........... BORING remember I'm talking about a Andy Griffith, Maybury type town LOL But man that was sure a long time to me.. Can't even imagine 30 years!!
