From the Wilderness Society
"Tie a Green Ribbon
Unite Around the Arctic Refuge
America's Arctic Refuge is in danger. This week, oil interests came one step closer to ruining the wild coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge with sprawling oil development. In a backdoor scheme cooked up by drilling proponents, the U.S. Senate has included language in the Federal Budget that could remove protections prohibiting oil development in the biological heart of the Refuge. But the fight is far from over!
Make a statement today. Show your solidarity for America's Arctic Refuge with a visible symbol -- a green ribbon. Tie it in your yard, or on your car hang it on your home, pin it on your clothes or wear it around your wrist. Then pass it on. Give ribbons to your friends and family.
Millions of Americans feel strongly about this issue -- and together we will NOT be ignored. Show your support until Congress assures us that the Arctic Refuge is safe from oil drills."

No problem John. I'll go out and get some green ribbon tomorrow. My Dad, who is a lifelong Sierra Club member and is a big environmentalist, was so upset yesterday about this I thought he was going to cry. He called the senate a "bunch of traitors" for passing the bill to explore. I KNOW there will be lots of green ribbons around this house and yard!

Dang right it's not over!!! I have 20, 6x6 posts around my house that will have a green ribbon on them. Creeps have ticked me off over this with the stupid vote being so close....aaaargh that is frustrating!!

Hate to burst your bubble, but green ribbons already symbolize organ transplant. So it's very possible the neighbors will all think you're just gung-ho for transplants.

Not sure you do hate to burst the bubble but, in fact, the green ribbon supports many, many good causes. Some examples:
Hope For Missing Children
Conserving Energy
Awareness Of Abuse (Mint Green)
Support The Family Farm
Support People Of Dalfur
Organ Transplant
The green ribbon has been used as a symbol for many campaigns, including various campaigns for environmental justice. No matter, I would wear a green ribbon to support any of these causes and let people think what they want.

What's with this comment? I would rather have my neighbors think I am gung-ho for transplants, than gung-ho to burst bubbles and show my lack of research and compassion.

You guys sure take offense easily. My FYI turns into an attack on green ribbons in your hands...hmmmm...
My lack of research? Because I didn't Google "green ribbon" to see what all it stands for, but rather let you know that most commonly it stands for organ donation (not coincidentally the cause with which I am most familiar, as medical personnel)?
I'm against drilling in the ANWR as well. I also do not see the point of wearing ribbons, period, but especially when there is a lot of ambiguity as to what their significance even is. Kinda like the people who think supporting the troops means putting a yellow ribbon magnet on their Escalade.
Nonetheless, consider my wrist duly slapped for --gasp!-- posting something I wasn't sure whether or not you knew, and which could, potentially (or at least in my cruel, rude and ignorant mind) change your mind as to how you wishto symbolize your support of the cause.

Actually, the green ribbon has been used for environmental causes FAR longer than for organ donation. Greenpeace has used it as symbol for many causes for at least 15 - 20 years. Being a Sierra Club member I most identify the green ribbon to symbolize any environmental issues. Therefore to claim that it most commonly stands for organ donation is your opinion and not necessarily the facts.

I don't think I will change my mind since it is traditional to sport a green ribbon for environmental causes.

So, is this what the post was really about?
I am sorry you feel this way about the ribbons to support our troops. I am quite certain what our ribbons are for. Every ribbon sold in our fundraiser provides supplies to the troops in order to give them a tiny slice of comfort we have every single day. So you say "You guys sure take offense easily"? You bet!!
I'm against drilling in the ANWR as well.
Interesting way in supporting those who are also against it.

hmmm
doesnt it work if we display a ribbon to stop the drilling in the
ANWR and Organ Donation,
I mean, they dont need my organs until i die anyway, right?
Sheesh, if they take them b4 i'm marching right down to the mvd and have them take that lil red heart off my drivers license!
THE OUTRAGE OF IT ALL!!!!

For Christ's sake people, calm down.

In your fundraiser. Not at Walmart or Target or gas stations or.....My significant other did two tours in Iraq, so don't tell me I don't support the troops because I don't put a stupid magnet on my car.
And Jo, I said nothing about when what started meaning what. But all those little ribbons and bracelets now come with the cause written on them, and the vast majority of the green ones say 'organ donation.' Not getting into a pissing match with you here, just stating an observation, if I may (although, apparently you all can but I cannot).
Once again, I apologize profusely, throw myself at your feet to kiss the ground upon which you walk, and will give myself 50 lashes with a spiked chain for having the gall to post --gasp!!-- extra information!!!!!!
Why don't you "make a statement" by lobbying your state's legislative representatives? I'd rather do that than tie a ribbon around my flower bed and hope Jim DeMint comes by my house to see it

Thanks, Jo. I'll even tie a green ribbon around it if that'll make you happy.
For the subtlety-challenged, my post used what is commonly called 'sarcasm.' The entire point of that statement was to be over-the-top. Which you knew, I'm sure, as long as we're giving credit where credit is due.
What is a suitable reward for you, for raising such a stink about my saying green ribbons aren't just for drilling oil in Alaska? Is there a trophy for genuinely overreacting? How about one for falling for the internet folly of misinterpreting a genuine comment (about green & ogran donation) to be a mean-spirited, deflating comment, and when said misinterpretation is clarified (i.e. posting something I wasn't sure whether or not you knew, and which could, potentially change your mind as to how you wishto symbolize your support of the cause), continuing to choose one's own misinterpretation?

Well.....men and cars come and go, but I can't live without my chocolate! I'll take the M&M's. Here are your keys Magnum. You'll find Carlos in the back still cleaning up the spilled M&M's. As for me, I'm heading to the Hershey's chocolate factory! Carlos was starting to get on my nerves anyways. He never learned to seperate the dark clothes from the light clothes and all my laundry was getting ruined. Not to mention me falling into the toliet because the seat was left up. Oh & he snores and he needs to pluck his nose hairs. LOL! :D
