Mr. John Olexa
(I omitted my street address)
La Plata, Maryland 20646-4625

Dear Mr. Olexa:

Thanks for getting in touch with me to
let me know of your support for the
Sportsmanship in Hunting Act of 2005 (S.
304). I appreciate hearing from you.

I absolutely agree that "canned hunts"
are brutal and inhumane. That's why I am
cosponsoring the Sportsmanship in Hunting
Act of 2005. As you know, S. 304 would ban
the interstate transfer or ownership of
exotic animals to be used in canned hunts.
This bill has been referred to the Senate
Judiciary Committee for further review.
Knowing of your position on this issue will
be helpful should S. 304 come to a vote
before the full Senate.

Thanks again for contacting me. If I
can be of help in any other way, please feel
free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Barbara A. Mikulski
United States Senator

P.S. If I can be of any further assistance
in the future, please visit my website at
http://mikulski.senate.gov or call my
Washington office at 202-224-4654.

I am pro-hunting, but categorically opposed to these types of "hunts." It's disgusting. Planted animals conditioned to be available to where the "hunter" (though poacher is more accurate) will be...ugh.

In SC, it's very common for "hunters" to sit in the back of their pickup truck, drinking beer, while their beagles run around barking their heads off, scaring the bejesus outta the deer, then the rednecks shoot at the deer when they run past the truck. It is so sad and disgusting. And I cannot tell you how many times I have had my dogs out on public land and hunting preserves, training or just hiking, and seen beagles, foxhounds and other hunting dogs that had been abandoned. It's so sad. THe dumb rednecks around here just keep breeding their beagles to death, and culling any pups who don't hunt...though what their definition of hunting is remains rather hazy....

New Mexico: Canned Hunts Bill Tabled! :D

Bill Number SB 337
Primary Sponsor Senator Tim Jennings
ASPCA Position Opposed
Action Needed Please click here to thank Rep. Gail Beam, Rep. Joni Gutierrez, and
Rep. Irvin Harrison who voted to table the bill.

Senate Bill 337, introduced by Senator Tim Jennings, which aimed to increase the size of so-called "game parks" was tabled in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee on Saturday, March 12, 2005, by a vote of 3-2.

This proposed legislation was opposed by animal welfare groups and hunting groups alike because it allowed landowners to effectively capture public, native wildlife within their fences, and claim those animals as shooting targets for their own profit. This bill also would have allowed larger sections of land to be enclosed by high fences, thereby disrupting the migratory patterns of wild animals.

Please click here (https://secure2.convio.net/aspca/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=1413) to thank the following legislators who voted to table the bill:

Rep. Gail Beam, Chair, Albuquerque, 986-4844
Rep. Joni Gutierrez, Las Cruces, 986-4234
Rep. Irvin Harrison, Vice-chair, Gallup, 986-4464

Voting against the motion to table the bill (a vote against animals):

Rep. Thomas Anderson, Albuquerque, 986-4452
Rep. Dianne Hamilton, Silver City, 986-4221

Absent:
Rep. Al Park, Albuquerque
Rep. Keith Gardner, Roswell

I too, (dont yell too loud at me) am pro hunt....but the operative word is "hunt"
That includes, tracking, walking, and....utilizing as much of the kill as possible (its kind of like a native american tradition, in my eyes)

I am Anti :
Deer Stands
Bird Blinds
Controlled Hunts
and Hunt preserves.....How is this Hunting?

Anyhow, good to see that New Mexico finally passed/held up something i agree with!

Last night I heard on the news about a website called Live- shot. I was in bed and wrote it down so I could look it up this morning. The web-site
Live-shot.com
This is one of those caged in hunting farms for lazy trophy hunters. They even talk about and give choices of what type of animal a person can hunt and how to go about taxidermy.
How sad has man kind gotten with all its technology. How cruel to not even give a living breathing thing a chance of survival. I just can not understand what is wrong with these people or people that would even think to do something like that.
I am going to write to anyone I can in our goverment and encourage everyone who goes to my website to petition to get these canned hunting parks shut down. ON one website they show a young girl with her first kill a beautiful ram and then another a Zebra. I will be going to a expo April 1st and intend on bring some literature to pass out to other pet retail companies asking them to support stopping these so called companies that do canned hunting.
It is so true: "You can judge a person or people by the way they treat animals.
I pray for each of these animals .. I can actually say nothing has made me this mad in a long time.

Hmm, gotta agree with the anger Cheryl has with people like this. the technology, the money, and not to mention the morals that they are teaching their childeren. Maybe too much of one thing (technology, money) and they are clueless as to what to do with it? I'm sure its not cheap to hunt one of these. And really, Unless you live in the natural environment of these animals, do they really have intentions on utilizing the meat or hide for sustainance?

Uggh,,,,i'd much rather see a live zebra than its head as decoration in my home! (hmm, maybe thats why my home isnt extravagantly decorated)

And please!!!!! Lets not call these people Hunters! They arent, they are snipers!

Partial article from the Washington Post

In all, there were more than 800 big-game and exotic animals piled into an old railroad car behind the Wyobraska Wildlife Museum, a modest and lightly visited facility here, far from any population center. It was just one of four large containers packed with animal mounts and skins -- trophies shot on expedition or safari to places such as South Africa, Mongolia and game-hunting parks in Texas.

Records show that in 2000, Wyobraska took in mounts worth $1.4 million. In 2004, the museum's curator said, the value of donations grew to more than $5 million, even though display rooms and storage containers were already overflowing. The entire stuffed menagerie of 800 animals in the rail car out back arrived just last year.

This one’s for you, Minnesota humanitarians. We need your help to prevent remote-controlled hunting from coming to the North Star State. First proposed by a businessman in Texas, remote-controlled hunting would allow a person sitting at a computer to use his mouse to access a rifle remotely and shoot and kill unsuspecting, captive animals.

But new bills, HF 2431/SF 2233, introduced by Rep. Erik Paulson and Sen. Tom Saxhaug, respectively, would ensure that this deplorable practice is never legal in Minnesota. Please visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center today, where you can urge your state representative and state senator to support this important legislation.

Pennsylvania: HB 1435 to Ban Remote Controlled Hunting
Representative Marc J. Gergely has introduced HB 1435 which would make it a crime to engage in “Internet” hunting or to operate a facility where this activity takes place. Act now (https://secure2.convio.net/aspca/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=1607) to urge passage of HB 1435.
