Dog Found Severely Burned In NewarkFeb 24, 2005 7:40 pm US/Eastern
A 4-year-old dog suffered severe burns after someone apparently set the it on fire, authorities said.
The dog, a male Rottweiler, was picked up Wednesday by Newark Animal Control after the agency received a call from a person who was holding the dog in a home, according to Matt Stanton, a spokesman for the New Jersey SPCA.
The SPCA, which enforces New Jersey's animal cruelty laws, has yet to determine who the owner was, but was investigating, Stanton said.
The dog, which had burns over 40 percent of its body, was taken to an animal hospital in Elizabeth, where its wounds were cleaned. The Associated Humane Societies' shelter in Newark was caring for the dog Thursday, and it seemed to be recovering, Stanton said.
"He's a great, nice-dispositioned dog," said Stanton.
The Associated Humane Societies has offered a $1,000 reward for information about the incident and even had an animal communicator speak with the dog to determine who the owner might have been.
