You should keep him/her in the house away from the tiels right now, he/she needs to be stressed as little as possible and I would think being near noisy tiels would stress her/him more. Put him/her by a window, that way the parakeet can look outside and maybe it will keep him/her from stressing. If I were you I would leave the parakeet alone for a few days to let it adjust to the cage and being inside. You can feed it parakeet seed and maybe see if it will eat any fruits or veggies. Other than the size factor I think a parakeet is a lot like a tiel. I've have parakeets before and have tiels now, they require about the same care. As far as name suggestions, I don't know, maybe see what personality it has. To tell if it is a male or female look at the cere (nostrils) if the cere is blue it is male if brownish it is female.

Gosh Kathy....how is it that you are just finding these birds in your yard. Isn't this the 2nd one (the first one being a tiel) in a very short time? Are you posting ads around and checking with shelters and such to at least give the owners a chance to find them? I know if I lost one of my birds I would be terribly distressed and would pray that if anyone found him they would try to get the word out that they have found him and give me the chance to be reunited with my baby. Please think this over and try to get this poor bird :( reunited with his family. If no one has called after you know in your heart you have done all you could then you can be thinking about a permanent home with you.
Well I am going to reinforce what I said earlier about the Teil you found on the health forum.
YOU NEED to QUARATINE this bird for 30 days in a separate air space so as not to expose your current birds to anything this bird may be ill from being it was out side and exposed to the elements for who knows how long??
Have you exhausted every avenue to locate them as the person/family is probably worried to death about there pet?
Place an ad in the paper in the lost and found they run these free for 2 weeks, put up some flyers that you found a bird, call vet offices and ask if any one has reported one lost with in the last two weeks, just shelters.
Also not just for the birds sake but to make sure it is healthy, because you do not know how long it was exposed to the elements outside you should have a health exam, at the same time this is done the vet can scan for a micro chip to see if the bird has one.
Keep in mind also that these little bird can pick up a wind or up draft and they are gone birds have hollow bones to make them really light to be carried off by a slight wind or breeze, for this reason they can fly a good distance so when trying to find the owners look in at least a 20 mile round radius from where you found the bird.
There is a yahoo group called 911parrotalert where you can write in to report a found bird.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/911ParrotAlert/
and this one also
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ParrotWatchTower/
I really cannot STRESS enough having the bird checked by a VET, and trying to locate the OWNERS of the bird. I am sure he was not let loose on purpose but got away by accident.
Also as a HEAD UP about this bird BUDGIES/PARAKEETS are MUCH more AGGRESSIVE then Tiels which are more laid back in personality PLEASE DO NOT cage/house these birds together.
Try putting the bird on a healther diet then just seed
IF you go to this link below
http://forums.petlovers.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6133
and scroll down to post #9 you can read my diet facts sheet.
PLEASE make sure you get this bird to a VET to ascertain the health of this bird and TRY and FIND the OWNERS at all cost. They are most likely VERY WORRIED, just think this way IF it was one of your birds that was loose and had gotten out WOULD you not want WHO ever found the bird to try and locate you.

no no i found this tiel months ago shes doing great with the other birds
You know Kathy it does NOT matter that you found the Tiel Months ago. At that time when you found the bird (which I figured from your post you found the bird months ago) DID you even bother to find the OWNERS???
Also from your post and the fact you said you are yet in school and the a few other things I am guessing you are under 15 yrs of age.
IT is VERY inconsiderate of you to KEEP someone else bird whether you found it months ago or not, whether it is a TIEL or a BUDGIE.
THE OWNERS of these birds LOOK for them FRANTICALLY and I can atested to this as I am on the 911 parrot alert listed IF you knew HOW many report their bird got loose or someone found a bird, not just parrots the majority of these reports are TIELS and BUDGIES.
Again I ask YOU HOW would YOU feel IF it was YOUR bird OUT LOOSE in the wild you do NOT know if it is DEAD or alive, SEARCHING all over for the BIRD. SAY some one found your bird BUT NEVER tried to locate the owner being YOU HOW would this make YOU feel???
By the way the keet even though it has full flight in the wings this may be how it got out of the house the owner MAY NOT have realized that the wings were fully flighted and the bird got loose through an open door or window by accident, SO you see just because the bird has a full flight does not mean it has been gone for a long time.
PLEASE TAKE some bit of RESPONSIBILTY here and TRY and work all AVENUES to LOCATE the PREVIOUS OWNERS. IF you can NOT find them after say a month then and ONLY then start to consider them yours. Until then think like you are BABYSITTING a friends bird.
OH just to let you know with these lost birds SOMETIMES people want them back so bad as THEY ARE part of their FAMILY their KIDS they offer rewards. THESE people are heartbroken as PART of their family is gone/missing. HOW would you feel??
These people search for months and never give up hope they search for years also they place ads every where, the network 911 is not just us related but world wide related as people from all over lose their precious family member DO TRY and locate the owners of these to birds. WHO knows IF you do find the tiels owner THEY may deicide that you should keep the bird BUT let the OWNER decide this NOT YOU!!

Well nobody has clamied him and plus where i live they do not post lost bird signs especially if its a budgie either way i put some and no1 has called and i doubt they will so i think ima keep him
Just cause Bird signs are NOT POSTED in your area DOES NOT mean the people are NOT looking for the bird.
NOT all people realize the flight distance these little birds can go on just one updraft or bit of wind as I told you before they can be carried about 20 miles away.
I also mentioned more then just posting signs to you, BUT trying to place a free ad in the LOST & FOUND of your local paper, Calling VETS.
Have YOU even tried the YAHOO group of 911 Parrot Alert I gave you and place the fact that you recently found a budgie and a tiel and the dates you found them and the location they were found at. Yes I know this was your back yard you can still give the city and state you located them in, also the croos streets to help a lost owner WHO may be searching for their beloved family pet.
This maybe a chlid's pet who is crying their eyes out over the loss of their friend, it may belong to an elderly person and their whole reason for living and getting up everyday was to take care of this bird that is now missing.
How could anyone have claimed him YET you have had the bird JUST THREE days, out of this what have YOU done to try and even find the owners of the bird.
IF you CANNOT do this then I regard you as what is known as a IRRESPONSIBLE bird owner that has a lot of growing up to yet do and IS VERY SELFISH.
They say what comes around goes around I hope someone is kinder to you when you lose one of your birds IF this should happen, and returns the bird home to you safe and sound instead of letting your heart be broken.
GOOD DAY

first of all you have done a great thing by looking after this little fellow...yes I would keep him away from other birds as he obviously has had a rough few days...you must have a local radio station or a local paper that you can advertize him / her in...I think Snow has come down very hard on you...you should be feeling good about yourself that you did rescue this bird when you could have just walked away but also being a hero involves trying to find where the little one has come from...yes you will say but Im attached to him/her but please remember the owners are too...I wouldnt touch the birds wings until you have exhausted every avenue trying to find the bird's owner...after about a month I then would look at considering him/her mine...but I do agree with Snow you should proberly get him/her checked out at your vet...if that isnt possible just keep a eye out for nasel discharge, sneezing, and general ill health..if any of these are present .then it is a must you take the little one to the vet...please let us know what happens and follow the advice from krazy4birds and dmf37 it is very sound advice
