Me again. Love_Bird4. Not to be confused with Love Bird B. Well anyway I have a question about my lovebirds beak. How can I tell if my birds beak is too long and do need to take it to a vet to get it fixed. Thanks

Your little ones beak may be too long if it interferes with his daily activities, like preening or hulling seeds. But, a vet check can never hurt. Beak overgrowth is often caused by a vitamin A deficieny, so make sure he is getting lots of carrots, dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin. If your birds beak does indeed need a trim, I would suggest taking him to a lisenced veterinarian, or a reputable bird breeder/rehaber, etc. Do not try to do it yourself, birds have nerves in their beaks, and you could do more damage than good.

Hey Bonnie,
How are you? I've missed you and hope the job is going well. Thanks for the great lovebird beak advice.
LoveBird4, I wouldn't go anywhere near my lovebirds beak unless I felt like getting bitten. What about those mineral blocks and perches that help keep the beak trimmed?

Hey Barb! Sorry it's been so long, everythings really crazy! I actually left Petsmart, wait until I make a whole post about it, than you'll hear me rant. :) Cuttlebones, mineral blocks, concrete perches, etc. are great for everyday trims, but if your bird has a deficiency, nothing will deter the growth. Good to hear from ya!!
