Thanks John, I don't think I'll be going to petco. I've only been a couple of times, think they are overpriced anyway.

Hearing or reading this store's name always makes my stomach turn. I usually direct people to this portion of the site http://www.petcocruelty.com/ when they mention this store. Although seeing all of the animals in this way really gets my blood boiling, the birds really top it off.

Thanks John for the current report listing.

I Do most of my pet shopping at either my local wal-mart, or there are many things I need that I cannot find there and I go to either feeders suppley, pet supermarket or there is a little mamma and papas pet store her in my town that has good priced stuff for my small and furries!

ah the 'ol mom & pop stores. we had one around here, family run, good people they were there for years. I like them, sure they were a little higher in price then Petsmart, (which was built about 2 miles down the road) but it was worth it. BUT in the end like so many other places they couldn't hang in there... now there gone.

What about Petsmart? Are they as bad? I was there this weekend. The place was packed and they had adoptions going on....I didn't see any abused animals. But, I don't want to patronize a place that mistreats critters!

I patronize the petsmarts in this area because their animals always look healthy, have plenty of space and toys, their fishtanks are immaculate, and they work with all local rescues to adopt out dogs and cats. And each time I've had questions, their staff has been knowledgeable and one actually told me not to buy one type of fish, but directed me to another, less expensive kind that would work better. I guess it depends on the management of the store. :)

Haven't heard or seen anything bad about petsmart

Our Petsmart here has a lot of helpful employees and all their pets are very well taken care of. Their Keets and Tiels are in huge-glass areas and have plenty of room to fly freely. They don't have a lot of small rodent pets, but the one's they have are in well kept cages. Their fish tanks are sparkling, but I have seen a lot of Bettas throughout the department that I thought were a bit too many, but they seem to be okay and not in those dinky plastic cups where the poor fish can barely move. I hate seeing those, even at Wal-mart.

I've been to that site before...:(. It's odd, though, the PetCo near us is actually really good. They take great care of their animals and support shelters and try to get people to think about adoption first. It's PetsMart that I have issues with. The one near here has sick rodents, dead fish, and bettas in very small, dirty cups.

I'm not trying to support either store (I always go to small, local stores rather then the big chains) but I never saw anything at our PetCo.

That's awful! I haven't gone to a Petco in years, so no loss there, right? :) How could people be so cruel to animals? :(

yeah, pet extream is really bad at taking care of their animals too!! when i was over their the rabbits cage was a mess and covered in flys :( , and i also noticed when i was petting the bunnies that they did not have any water!!!!! So i had to take the water bottles out, go to the water fountain and fill them back up!! And their were 7 bunnies who were vary THIRSTY!!! :(

The few times I have been in Petco I didn't like the layout. Everything was cramped together, not even enough space for two people to squeeze past each other in the isles. The prices are too high and weird, expensive brands of cat food Ive never even heard of. They just don't feel right when you walk into the store. Too many small, confined spaces for a true Pet store. :(

Thanks for the link. I usually go to small stores and sometimes PetsMart, but I'm certainly never going to step foot inside a PetCo again. Well....maybe as a whistleblower!

Thanks for the heads up on PetCo. There is one near me, and I have bought a few bird toys from there, however I will NEVER be going into one as long as they have this type of record!

Here is where I buy my Bird supplies from (http://forums.petlovers.com/vb/showthread.php?t=7576)

I have been to that site and my mom called up my local pet store, and complained that there was dog urine all over everything and the rats where over-populated and the cages where not kept clean. She said that she would come in every week to see if they where improving or she would keep complaining. So they finally cleaned the place up. Although I can't say all pet-cos are like that. I use to go to one and me and my mom knew this guy who worked there (he was really smart and good with the animals), he kept the cages clean and he gave the birds attention a lot (mainly why my mom met him) and he would let my mom hold the birds and talk with them and such. No doubt he wasn't handing the animals out to everyone, he just knew me and my mom and knew that we had rats and dogs and that we where good with animals. But yeah lots of petcos are horrid places and they pretty much just let their animals sit and die, it is sad. But me and my mom did our very best here and thats all we could do? :(

good job.

Please don't forget to write petco & let them know how you feel, enough people complain will force them to do something... do it for the animals

I won't buy anything from PetSmart because they are in it for the money. They tried to sell me an $80 bird cage when all Sweetie needed was to have his mirror removed (he was ripping out his feathers). Our Petco here is immaculate! I have never seen anything amiss and the rodents are seperated by male and female. My only complaint is the only turtle they carry is a Russian tortoise, the hardest kind to keep healthy.

It's funny, our mom & pop store is actually cheaper than Petco. I don't like the fact that a poster on the wall says, "Do not keep rodents on cedar shavings", but ALL of theirs are on them. But their birds seemed to be happy and in good health, plus ALL of their puppies come directly from the SPCA, which impressed me a great deal.
Take care,
Dawn

LoL I have done something like that. PETA sent me a bunch of "Boycott IAMS
until they stop cruel animal test" stickers. I went to petsmart and stuck a bunch on the front of there bags of dog food..... I like to add there were a lot of bags there too!

iamsodead.com

Oh yeah! my personal protest against IAMS is coming up in a few weeks. Got my sign and info ready. I have a photographer friend who works for the local paper who said she would be there to take a few images.

She said she will stick around and get a few arrest shots too. ... VERY FUNNY ;)

This is very disturbing. The store in MI is about an hr. drive but I feel the need to make a visit and possibly a scene if need be!

No reports for Nebraska, and I'm not surprised. All (except one puny one) of the Petcos here take very good care of their animals that I have seen. The birds are almost always tame and nice (except for the smaller ones of course) and they are fed pelleted diets and such.. Petsmart on the other hand.. oy I hate the Petsmarts around here. Dirty awful things. I wish we had a GOOD bird specialty shop around here. I have to shop at Petco during the time between birdshows, then at birdshows I have to stock up (since they're only like twice a year around here!) on the GOOD toys and such! Nebraska is not the best place to own a bird if you can't just order stuff online (personally I like to see the toy in person and inspect it before I buy it..).

The PetSmart I frequent used to have a very nice person who worked there who got caught telling me that tomatoe juice in my girl dog's water would stop the brown spots in my grass and wouldn't cause liver and kidney problems like the supplements do. I was still in the store when her supervisor talked to her about it, and I haven't seen her working there since. I tried calling and telling the manager what a great salesperson they had, but I believe it landed on deaf ears.
I was very grateful to this person for helping me save my dogs health.

I didn't know all the horrible stuff about PetCo, I am glad I know now. Thank you.

Well, I shop at a petco in Az and they are so great and friendly they always do so good with my dogs. I don't like petsmart and I will never shop at the one near me, they are just out for Corporate America, there employees are not very friendly. But Not all Petsmarts are like that and not all petcos are like that either. So I think the point of the matter would be just check out all your local pet stores and just go to the best one :)

First let me emphasize that I don't believe animals have rights. Be aware that you are entitled to your opinion, and I respect it, so please do the same for mine...and READ ON:

Animals that through no fault of their own are kept as domesticated, have the right to be taken care of with proper husbandry, food, and enclosure for their protection. Get this  ALL PET SHOPS ARE IN IT FOR THE MONEY RATHER THAN THE ANIMAL CARE. Their dogs come from puppy mills and prone to disease. It will be a matter of time before some bird virus breaks out. The ferrets are on the wrong diet(Marshall is being boycotted by various ferret rescues across the country, because it's main ingredient is fish which can be bad for the ferrets sensitive stomach). Then there reptiles and amphibians are death and diseases waiting to happen.

Back when I collected lizards and snakes, I received a call from someone who had bought a Senegal Chameleon and wondered about building a cage. Facts I know...the Senegal Chameleon is a hard chameleon to keep in captivity and is not meant for ameteurs. I asked what he bought, and first thing hesaid was a hot rock, which I immediately pointed is useless for an arboreal lizard. From there it got worse, and he didn't want to hear that he paid over $100 for lizard and useless equipment...eventually the lizard died!

At Petco once, I had to report them because they were selling an endangered species in NYS. Again pet shops care about the sale, rather than what the outcome of the pet will be. ALL PETSHOPS! Best to find a private breeder for pets...just a suggestion!!!

Shop on the internet, or shops that sell only food rather than animals.

is the worst sham going, and I might only buy dog food and avoid all else if I'm in the area. Their pets are overpriced and some are real sickly. Beware of the cutesy ferret scam, where ferrets cost about $100 or less because the vet care, cages, food, treats, etc. can run you over $1000+ in the long run. The ferretstore.com offers better deals.

Their reptiles are way overpriced and aren't that healthy looking. The staff is realy clueless when it comes to their care. Go figure they thought nothing when I asked if they knew they were selling an endangered species recognized and protected by the State's DEC laws. They insulted my intelligence, so I contacted my buddy at the DEC who had drilled into me that you can't own an endangered species.PERIOD.

Trust me buy animals from reputable breeders. Even AKC dog kennels may be mills. I worked at an airport and puppies are sometimes flown on commercial airlines. Dogs are unloaded in the crates they are shipped, some lacking food and water and left in the sun or cold for hours or days until the kennels or pet shops come to pick them up. Airline employees aren't really required to protect the animals once they are unloaded.

Carlycat,

I doubt that you are going to be around again as it seems that your only purpose was to flame everyone who had posted to this thread, but you might have at least taken the time to notice that the thread was over a year old before you did. In my opinion, you wasted a great opportunity to let people know that in your experience, Petco has a good track record for their treatment of animals. Some people might have even been inclined to believe that the company had taken measures to insure that their standards were improved and maintained throughout all of thier stores. Instead, you have chosen to use vicious, profanity laced attacks that will not convince anyone here that you have any valid point to make. You have done your employer no favor! :(

there was a petco in my area and it seemed fine and all it was open for about maybe less than a year.then just like a month ago i saw in the newspaper that they got there dogs and cats for adoptions from this really bad place and the place were they got there animals from got shutdown and fined and stuff!it serves them right no animal deserves to be treated like that cause they can't do anything themselfs so it's sad:( and also before they got busted i was at petco just looking at the dogs and such and the peaple started packing up and they put like 5 cats in just one of those small travel containers and they walked out with three travel things and i'm pretty sure they had a lot more animals than that so i got prety suspicius.
