i have an important question for you all, my staffordshire had pups 24hrs ago and has since accidently squashed 2 killing them both she did really well with previous litters (2) and those litters had 8 pups this litter there were 7, now 5, i have taken the pups away for now, exept for a feed once every 2-3hrs, is this what you would suggest?, i intend to put them back with her in a couple of days when they are more able to get out of her way,do you think this too early, could they still get squashed? thankyou everyone! await your advice.

You sound like you've bred before, but don't exactly know what you're doing.

Anyway, you should definitely regulate the feeding. Every 2 hours is a good amount of time. But do not let her have the puppies nearby on her own for at least four weeks. Before that, all the puppies will be able to do is crawl around. Hardly an escape routine.

Staffordshires are HUGE compared to their pups. Do NOT take the risk of more pups being killed by their mother. Unless she seems careful and mindful of her puppies while you are watching her with them, do not EVER leave her alone with them. You will end up with 1 or 2 puppies left by the end of it if you leave her alone with them at this point.

Also, how old is she? If she is 5 or older then she should not have any more litters. There is a risk to her and her puppies at this point. And don't risk letting this happen again. I really recommend that you spay her after this litter. It's just not worth the trouble and pain.

I'm not an animal activist, but every time you breed your dog, other puppies and dogs have to be sent to shelters and die because another set of homes is taken away. Please stop breeding your dog. But best of luck with this litter.

Thanks for your view,i may not know what i am doing in this situation because to date i hadn't had a problem relating to the mother accidently (she doesn't appear to be doing it deliberatly, she is very good mother care wise, now and in the past) laying on her pups and i believe we can never be experts at anything we have never done before, when i have a problem i research(and ask for ADVISE!) or call my vet.. Six yrs old is older than i would breed so i can agree, what i can't agree with is your assumtion that the puppies that breeders, breed,(purebred, papered and loved) are going to take the place of those dogs that are homeless, it's a sad fact that the majority of dumped homeless animals are from irresponsible people who breed x's or unpapered dog, and would not be purchased by someone with a papered, purebred not to mention expensive pups in mind, rare colours strains(mine has blue colour through her line),the responsibility of breeding better pups each time has to be your joy!.(Even an adult can have a good price on resale). My animals are also Here to stay even after breeding, cause i also happen to love them all.

GAIL,
What a sad story, i'm really glad that bogie and these unhomed dogs found there way to your sister, every dog deserves a loving home,i as well as staffy's i keep 2 female maremma livestock protection dogs, they have a rather special job, they look after and protect all our animals,it is very sad in the case of maremmas that people think they have the time and patience to devote to a maremma, but maremmas are very different behavour wise, they will act as the shepard when there owner is absent taking the responsibilty for there charges and if they haven,t been taught correctly can get into a great deal of trouble or wander and sadly these dogs usually end up being seen as bad dogs. Luckily a rescue sociaty is there the same as your sister and thank god for them!
Now an update on my beautiful staffy's-All is going great as long as i watch she doesn't sit on them so they are on 24hr watch still,i think it may take another week yet, they are growing well and healthy,we've had no more unfortunate deaths, honey(mum) is great and shall retire to live the good life after this litter!
bye for now nerrida
