how many of you just leave the cage door opened all day. I find that Hamlit likes to spend some of his time in his cage even when the cage door is opend for him to come out like my brother I guess he just likes his room

While I am at home, I keep my tiel and budgies cages open. They love the freedom. Luckily, they stay in and around (on) their cages, visit each other, and share food and toys, and never leave the bird room on their own. However, when I go out, I put them back in and close the cage doors, just in case they do get into mischief.

My pionus also has this privilege, but he stays in and on his own cage across the room. I am afraid he's too big a guy to play with the tiel and budgies. He's relatively new here and i'm not too sure yet. Same applies to him, when I go out he's back inside cage with door closed.

I've never allowed my lovebird to have that freedom. It's just too dangerous. Theres so many things for her to get into. Being that she's so tiny, she could get stepped on, get caught in a drawer, etc. She might nibble on a poisonous plant, fly into the pot on the stove, get curious and fly out an open door, chew on a wire, flutter upstairs and forget how to get back down, be hit by a door opening, drown in the toilet. She'd crawl all over the house. She's so active and curious, I have to watch her every second. Even if I did keep the door open, she would never go back in the cage even if she was hungry. She hates the cage and puts up a big fight when it's time to go in, and screams, bangs the doors up and down, and paces whenever I'm in the room.

We have a cat so I can't allow my birds that liberty. However when I am home they are usually out and about in my room. Inspected for cat, door closed.

My three budgies always have their cage door open, and I trust them completely. They fly around my room and have tons of fun, and every single time they land on their cage, the climbing tree, my other birds's cages, or me, if I'm around. I always shut my door and have bird-proofed my room pretty carefully. My conures however are never left in the room with their cage doors open for long periods of times because they don't get along, and both are fairly big chewers once they find something they like! My lovebird is let out by herself when we're around to check on her every few minutes, but otherwise isn't since she can't be trusted to stay in certain spots. All of the birds go back into their cages often even if the door is open, and always go back in to sleep.

All of my birds are allowed out of their cages when we are home, but are usually held. They like to spend time with our Golden retriever (Amber) and our cat (April). However they cannot be trusted out of their cages unattended, because they will fight. They do get along with the dog and cat better than they get along with each other.

[FONT=courier new][COLOR=green][FONT=arial][SIZE=1]http:// Hi everyone I'm new. I have a Quaker named Chuckles. Chuckles loves to be out of his(her) cage and with me.I leave the door open when I'm close by but if I go out side I pop him back in for safe keeping! I have 2 Chihuahuas and they all respect one another mainly because Chuckles has instilled the "fear of the Bill" in them! On ocassion Chuckles has let himself out and come looking for me in other rooms. He walks across the floor quietly untill he sees me then starts jabering away. He's also happy to play on the top of his cage with the door open so he can come and so as he pleases. I've had my little green buddy for almost a year now, he's 1 1/2 and can't imagine being without him. Look forward to talking to everyone and getting to know you and your feathered friends.

Hello Sharon and Welcome to you, Chuckles and 2 chihuahuas. They sound like fun. I love that name for your Quaker he sounds comical, especially since he bullies the two dogs.

Quakers are illegal to own here in New Jersey:( , wish they weren't. I hear they are quite fun.

I have Snickers (tiel), Razzle, Dazzle, Chubbee, Frisbee (Budgies) and Marcel (Maximillians Pionus).

Talk soon,

Jenny and Mrs Birdie I'm so glad that this is an active site ! I also have a teil 19 yrs old Toni. The Chihuahuas are Beena and Bo. I got Chuckles from a breeder when he was 5 months old. The owners smoked so heavily in the house that my poor little green chicken smelled like an ash tray.He almost was named Smokey! It took a number of baths and several weeks before he smelled like a birdy again. He has decided not to let any one handle him but me. We all tried to handle him from day one but he would only allow me to handle him. The rest of my family talks to him and pass food to him through the cage. Chuckles cage is between the breakfast and dinning room so he is in the middle of the action. They may not be able to handle him , but they can't ignore him either! My husband talks to him constantly and now Chuckles say Mamma, come'er come'er (come here) mama's birdy, pretty bird and of course the first was hello. Hubby's working on" let me out" now.If he picks up on what my daughter says to him it will be"Aw Chuckles you little green devil"! But that bird sure loves me.He lays sideways and upside down in my hands and I scratch that sweet little head.I take his cage out and hang him in the shade so he squawk and screech his head off at the other birds. I'm glad to have found this site. I know it will be fun getting to know you both. And I know you love your birds as much as I do! bye for now.
