well i've found a vet here in egypt who claims to know birds...i'm taking victor (african grey) to see him tomorrow. i've never had victor in for a welness check, want to get his nails trimmed and wings clipped properly, and i'm noticing something that i hope is not going to be a problem.

victor has a small patch, the size of a pea or smaller under his beak...like where his 'chin' would be if birds had chins...that has no feather growth on it. when victor has eaten, this patch pops out to about the size of a (very small) pea. it goes back down after awhile...in the morning it is completely down, but once he eats, it bulges out again.

anybody familiar with anything like this?

victor eats well, is very active and vocal. doesn't appear to be in the least bit ill, and the patch doesn't appear to cause him any distress what-so-ever.

i mentioned it to the pet shop guy where i bought victor (about a month ago) and he said bring him in and he'll give me another one. this is NOT what i had in mind!

so we'll take him in to the vet tomorrow, see if he can make anything of it, if it is in fact anything to be concenrned about at all. just wondered if anybody here knew of anything like this.

Can you take a picture of it, because it is hard to be sure what you are describing.

can't take a picture.

just picture the spot under a bird's beak...where a chin would be if they had one.

on victor it's a small bare spot...about the size of the O on my keyboard.

after he's eaten, it pops out a bit.

is it bare, no feathers, on maddy? i've looked at other african greys and didn't see it as a bare spot.

and it's a very noticable pop-out on victor after he eats. i think you'd notice it if you saw it.

lol...thanks for checking.

i dunno. maybe i'm just being paranoid. it's now a coupla hours since victor has eaten and you can hardly see the bare spot.

i'm gonna take him to the vet anyway. for me, if not for him.

also want to just check this vet out for future reference. no avian vets here in egypt, though this one claims to know birds.

I know just where it is you are talking about. My parrot has the same. It almost looks like an adams apple? Its okay. I believe all birds have it. Some are just unoticeable. Mine has always had this and it never affects her. So I wouldn't really worry! Its a norm! Relax now. Gail

Even if it probably is nothign to worry about, I'd still take your Victor to the vet who claims he knows birds. If Victor ever got in an emergency situation, it would be much less stressful on you and him to already know the vet and have him know you. Some people who've never taken their birds to a vet before have something bad happen to one of them, then they rush it to the nearest emergency vet who says they treat birds, only to find out that they really know nothing about birds.

i already did take him to the vet.

he said the spot is nothing to worry about. didn't say adam's apple, but basically the same thing.

his nails and wings didn't need clipping after all. the vet claims he's in good health. i wouldn't call this guy an avian vet, but he did seem to know what he was talking about bird-wise.
