Well, its been 2 weeks since i've got my new parakeet :) . But im having some difficulties. when i very first got him he would get on my finger and have no problem handling him. but as time went by he started kinda avoiding me. now all he does is gets on my finger then flies to his cage right away. its been a week while doin this. I figured he would have stopped and trusted me by now but he's only gotten worse. can someone suggest wut i should do?

Hello afroman
Have you been playing with your keet regularly? Or just every once in a while because most of the time you have a tame bird to keep he/she tame you need to interact for a little while each day. Good luck!!!!!!!

Hey there afroman, welcome to Petlovers and lovielover is right on what she said. Sinse it seems you are back a few steps on the taming part the first thing you need to do is as soon as you get him out of the cage go to a different room to handle him. If he can not see his cage he will be easier to control. Work on your step up commands and lots of TLC. After each session take him back to his cage, do not let him get ahead of you there, it is important that you place him on the cage yourself. Do as many training sessions as you can and want to. I really don't think it will take long for him to be listening to you and trusting you again. Good luck! Oh...one more very important thing......do not forget the treats for a job well done!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

First of all, you're doing great w/the training. When I first got Spike, I used to take him out every day & put him on my shoulder. Now whenever I take him out, he goes right on the shoulder. As for the toys..since it's been two weeks since you got him, the birdie might still be getting used to everything yet. In time he'll play w/everything. Also I don't think how a birdie sounds makes it a boy or girl. Spike's a boy, but he has a high pitched chrip. :p I think the best way to tell is whether there's eggs in a few months. If there's eggs, then the birdie's a girl. If not, then it's a boy. :p

Afroman, I think you have to play the toys with your bird, and not just leave the toys in the cage for him to play. Parakeets are interactive and they (and you) enjoy the toys better when both play.
I have my (actually it is my son's because he wanted to buy one) parakeet for more than five months now. We bought the bird when he was about a month old and he has now undergone one moulting. I read a few bird training books and frequently browse internet articles, including joining this wonderful forum for information. I think the parakeet is quite well trained now; the only exception is that he does not talk, no matter how frequently and patiently my son and I urged him.
I keep referring to the bird as a male because his cere is kind of bluish, but that tinge of blue has yet to get any darker. So far, I have not seen any eggs. :D

thanks to all that helped me out. now he's startin 2 get on my finger and stay on my shoulder while i walk around and watch tv. now he will only fly to his cage a few times but i think he might stop in a couple days. chirpy, ill try what u said and try to play with the toys with him. i have a question, BB keeps laying in his food dish! he will have his neck rested on the edge of the food dish and lay in it. if not that he will have his butt over his food dish and crap in it. is this normal? the only things i can think of why he's doin this is that either he likes the feel of the seed or its warm. N e 1 have ideas on why?
