Albert is up for adoption here in Kansas
I have a question about the difference between the Double Yellow Head and an African Grey CAG/TAG. Most of my research has been on the Grey and I would like to know if there is a significant difference between the two. I think Albert is adorable and am thinking about going to visit him. Can you guys give me some info or opinions on the DYH Amazon. I would greatly appreciate it. :)

He's beautiful!! Double Yellow heads and other Amazons can get agressive during their "puberty" and I forget about what age that is.

Thanks Peteybird!! The only DYH I have been in contact with was a bird named Pete. He was owned by a lady (Alice) who was an acquaintance of my mother. Pete was really, really mean, but not to Alice. He was rarely taken out of his cage, other than to go to the vet for check ups and such. I felt sorry for the bird. :( He looked similar to Albert, but I don't remember there being any red on his wings.

Ohhhh, he is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!!!!! He looks so alert and interested in that picture. Wish I had some info for you, but alas, I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to birds. Again, what a cutie!

our DYH Phil was great, he was very socialized with people and was such a clown...very smart and he talked all the time. i have heard that amazons do not tend to be lovable or even sometimes they can be mean but to be honest phil was the complete opposite and i know a couple of other amazon owners who have sweet parrots as well...i guess it all comes down to how the bird is raised basically... there is alot of info about them on the net that you can check out.... only thing to remember and ive said it on other threads before, that amazons are prone to obesity and you have to be very careful with that, because it can cause liver disease which is VERY fatal.
proper diet is key to these birds, as well as any other, but like i said they are prone to obsity which is not a good thing. if you do get him, i would have him checked by a good avian vet right away, have him weighed and blood tests done...the vet can also give you pointers on how to care for him!! :D
good luck!

Thanks Neen and Sassy...this is all I know about Albert so far.
Hello. My name is Albert. I do not know how old I am, but I do know I am not that old yet. I am a LARGE Double Yellow head Amazon. I came into the program not doing too well with humans, but my foster parents have been doing good with me. I am now stepping up and I am trying not to bite all the time.

When I was reading up on amazons (I wanted to get a lilac-crowned amazon or a panama amazon before I got my CAG), I remember that they are very entertaining birds. Most are not shy around groups of people and would talk or even sing. DYHs are known to be good "opera singers" and are also believed to be the best talker out of all the amazons. Amazons get hormonal during puberty and breeding season and some of them get very territorial and aggressive. There are lots of info on the net about dealing with this aggression. Anyway, good luck --- and Albert is really cute.

Albert is beautiful. i dont know much about amazons (my "education" is limited to greys). but from what i understand, their personalities are generally more outgoing than greys.

I definitely plan on hitting the educational trail on Amazons, specifically DYH's. I really was gearing towards a Grey, but I have seen Albert up for adoption for a while now and he is starting to grow on me...LOL

I really like Amazons. If I hadn't gotten my Grey I would have gotten an Amazon. My in-laws have a Lilac-Crowned Amazon and she is a wonderful bird. She's talkative but a little shy around strangers. This is at least her second home. We don't know her history. The vet said she could be anywhere from 10-25 years old, but it's hard to tell.

I think the Lilac-crowned are beautiful too! My parents had one before I came into the picture and they said he was a joy to have. His name was Jerry, and I have heard tons of stories about him.
Oh boy, a Hormonal Opera Singer......LOL We can handle that.. :D Our nearest neighbors are 30 acres away...is that far enough?...hehehehe

LOL....I know what you mean about them growing on you 'cuz that's exactly how I ended up with my CAG instead of an Amazon. I think if you feel that Albert is the right bird for you, you won't regret it. I originally thought that Greys are not for my family ... but Akilah is proving me wrong. She likes to do things that most Greys wouldn't even consider doing (like hanging upside down to give me kisses and laying upside down on my palm while I sing her a lullaby). :D

So any more thoughts of adopting Albert - Magnum?

Oh ya!! I've been given some good info for research on Amazons. My Mexican Red Head I had is classified as an Amazon, but I am not sure they are similiar. Nikki isn't as big as Albert either.
I am waiting for the rescue to call me back so I can get their application. If I pass the app. phase, then I can start my visits with Albert and see if we will make a good match. I still have the issue of moving to Oregon, but I plan to talk to them on this to see what they think in regards to Albert. :)

I will for sure. Both Hubby and I have been concentrating on the foster goats and choosing a day to transport them. I just updated that post and hope everything goes well. I will be happy for them, just feeling low right now. :(
