I'm looking into buying a baby flying squirrel maybe in February or March. Anyone know of breeders around here? I'll ship if necessary, but I would prefer not to.

All's I can say is make sure they are legal there and see if you need a permit. I don't know of any breeders right now but I can look around and see what I can find. Try a search for the National Flying Squirrel Association there are good people on there and a lot of breeders from everywhere. Hope that helps.

Thanks, I'm having a little trouble finding something on NY, but I'll keep looking! I know there's a pet store near me that sells them, but I talked to someone who doesn't sell them anymore, because he thought they were illegal to sell, but then someone said they'd ship one to me because its legal. I'm confused, lol but I'll work it out

Yeah, NYS laws on exotics are a-changin'. Here's a shop in North Syracuse that deals in exotics and can answer any question you may have. I suggest you explore the website and contact them with your questions. Note that NYC laws may differ from Upstate laws. But something did pass about exotic that is to affect the whole industry.
Your flying squirrels may be called sugargliders, because sometimes you can't keep the actual species because it is protected. I found that out with the tiger salamander and other abystoma species in NY.

I have wanted a Southern flying squirrel but they are illegal to own here in Arkansas :( I could get a Northern Flying squirrel (gosh knows why it is legal and Southern Flying squirrels aren't?), but I don't know if they make as good of pets :)
