Thank you Kaye for posting this. It has been signed and sent #21,307.
I work with several people that go to Alaska together every year for their two week vacation. They have a guide that flies them to their destination and they do the usual fishing and camping. They have told me that they are chastised by locals if they do not shoot a wolf when spotted. They refuse to do it and take a lot of heat over it. Very sad to think these people do not have respect for their own endangered animals :( .
I just want to thank you for being a member and writing all those letters, John! There's not really much I can do at the moment besides sign the petition, but atleast some can do more!
Protect those who can't protect themselves.
Thanks all who sign the petition.

I signed the petition...
:( It is an atrocious that this is being permitted. It is ridiculous. How evil and STUPID is the Alaskan government, anyway? Do we have any Alaskan members on this forum that can contact their state senator or the governer to voice a serious complaint?

I can find out the name of the area they go to. I am sure they go to the same area every year. They bring back gorgeous pics of wild life, including wolves. One of the guys told me he was in such awe when he got up right before dawn and was watched by a wolf as he drank his coffee. That would be so awesome for me to experience. :)

I am sorry, but I fail to believe that a local Alaskan would have done this.... I have lived here in Alaska almost my whole life. People that live here are here because they like the wildlife, the outdoors, and yes the fishing and hunting, but I can not believe that this was done!
Do we have any Alaskan members on this forum that can contact their state senator or the governer to voice a serious complaint?
I am an Alaskan member, and yes I do plan to write some letters to our local offices, all in time tho my friends....

Tamara, I just got off the phone with one of the guys that goes annually and he said they usually fly into Petersburg and will go to Kupreanof. He said there are not towns close by where they go. He said they will sometimes go down to Ketchikan also. I told him about the petition and he said he is going to sign it too because they are so beautiful to see in the wild and it is such a shame to slaughter them for no reason. I have no reason to doubt the man's word. He is an animal lover just like we are and truly is concerned for the wolves.

What does Bush have to do with this? Please explain.
John Olexa

He has the power to stop this. Trouble is this is Bush's last turm in office so weather he really cares now or not I don't know. Write to the Gov of Alaska, tell him you refuse to visit ( don't matter if you plan on it or not ) untill this stops, if enough people write maybe he'll listen. (Tourism dollars)
The TV channel OLN Outdoor Life Network plans to air a show, forgot what its called but its a trophy hunt!! contest in Africa. Who can kill the big five there first.
I wrote OLN and told them I'll will never watch a show on there channel again if they air that show!!! thing is I never watch that channel anyway, but they don't need to know that. Can you imagine, a show about nothing more then killing , one each of the big five African animals for sport in a compitition ........ Yeah I checked its legal

That is disgusting. Those beautiful animals..... :( Who actually started or authorized this aerial shooting in Alaska? Was it the Alaskan Government?

The Alaska Department of fish and Game ( ADF&G) there the ones issuing aerial wolf gunning permits.

That is just sick and disrespectful. Who are we "the human being" to take the life of another living being. If these people would just take a good hard look around them and see the beauty of these animals and how majestic they are! Oh that makes me angry. It seems like society, not all of it, has such a low regard for life. Very very sad. Of course, I signed and have emailed the site to everyone I know. Thanks for pointing us to it.

I need to first say this, I don't want anyone to come after me here, but I do think from what I have read in these posts that you are not getting the whole story about why they hunt the wolves. I DO NOT agree with the reasons behind this, as I think it is up to mother nature to handle, but that is just me, I am one person though and can only do so much to change it... okay Wolves are hunted in about 2% of Alaska's land. Attached (I hope I did it right) is a map of where the wolves are hunted at. The green areas on the map. Wolves are hunted to help the population of moose and caribou and even bears. Also there are over 7,000 wolves in Alaska. Thats a HUGE number, even with the amount of land they have to roam. Once again to I agree with them hunting them? NO I think other things could be done to prevent the over population, or even they could transport them elsewhere, but where?
I thought also that I would give you and idea of where Petersburg is and where the area that the wolves are being hunted are. You know the shape of Alaska right? It has the arm coming down with the islands to the right towards Canada as you look at it, that where Petersburg is. Now if you look in the center down a bit you will see Fairbanks, or what is also known as the Interior of Alasks, down off to the side just a bit is the area where the wolves are hunted. Because I don't live in Petersburg, and have never been there or can really say I know anyone from there I can't say that your friend is wrong, but at the same time, I still can't see a local that is that far away from where the hunting is taking place to get upset about someone not killing a wolf... There is a large population of wolves in Southeast Alaska (thats where Petersburg is) but as far as I know they are not being hunted.

Oh come on!!!!!!!!! to help Moose,Caribou and even Bears???? Give me a Freaking break!.Who told you that , the ADF&G?
Do you know the success rate of wolf kills?Less then 20% of there hunts .Besides, when a natural predator takes down pray they take down the old, sick, or weak. Which keeps the gene pull strong in the prey animals.
(Without human interference) so thats a bunch of crap about them wanting to protect those other animals.
Those other animals are 10 times in more danger from Humans then they'll ever be from Wolves.
They will use any excuse to allow hunting! believe me , I've been fighting stuff like this for more then 10 years now.

This makes me sick. I can't understand why people have to hunt down innocent animals just to have something to show for it. Here in South Africa they had "canned lions". The "supplier" will raise the lions (so it's tame, eating out of your hand) and then the hunter can pick and choose which one he wants, shooting it while it looks them in the eye. I don't know what has become of this world. I went of my rocket hearing this. I also signed the petition. Hope that they can put a stop to this. Thanks for all who are trying to help.

I recieved this via-email today and thought I would post it here. There was also a video included in the email, but I have opted not to post it here due to it's graphic nature.
Please take a moment to send an email to
the major news networks urging them to cover the planned
killing of 900 wolves in Alaska. We need to generate as
many emails as possible to get their attention. Thank you.

I signed happily and I linked it to my local forum and I know that will get about another 20 sigs at least.
The only reason they're "helping" the Moose and Caribou is so that the humans can hunt them. :/
Thanks everyone for signing and spreading the word.

Despite tens of thousands of phone calls, emails and letters, Governor Frank Murkowski refuses to stop the aerial gunning of wolves in Alaska. To make matters worse, his Board of Game has approved the number of wolves to be killed at over 1,000. This will be the greatest wolf massacre in half a century.
Here's what we're doing now: Defenders of Wildlife has newspaper ads ready to go in major newspapers across the country. Defenders is determined to use every means available stop this terrible practice where marksmen can gun down wolves from the air or chase them to exhaustion - then land and shoot them point blank.
These ads will raise critical awareness throughout the country of the slaughter of wolves occurring in Alaska. But we need your help to run them. Our goal is to raise $50,000 over the next 72 hours so we can contact the newspapers and book ad placements immediately. Please consider an emergency tax-deductible contribution to help place these ads before more wolves are killed.
Lawyers for Defenders of Wildlife have formally petitioned Interior Secretary Gale Norton to halt the killing as a violation of the Federal Airborne Hunting Act. To build grassroots pressure on her to act, we want to generate citizen petitions to her - especially through the placement of these newspaper ads.
Please send your emergency tax-deductible contribution today - your generous donation will help focus the eyes of the nation on this horrific killing of wolves in Alaska.
Thank you!

P.S. Defenders has just run ads in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times. I hope we can count on your donation today to expand this advertising campaign.

[that really stinks!! wolves are beautiful creatures and dont deserved to be killed by,man, a less majestic and beautiful creature!! we dont have the right to kill wolves!! its not our job, yes i do agree that they maybe could be spread out or something just dont shoot the poor things.I live in the atl and there are so many fricken buildings and shops n crap bein built that the foxes and (small) wolves are leaving their torn down homes and coming into the urban areas!! many peoples pets have been eaten, killed, or sevearly injured because of this! THESE PETS DONT DESERVE THIS! JUST LIKE THE FOXES AND WOLVES DONT DESERVE TO BE SHOT/KILLED/KICKED OUT OF THEIR HOMES! and the gov wonders why these animals are coming out! ITS CRAZY TO ME! they have all this stuff like 'Why are Wolves Coming out and bothering people and their innocent pets?' well i cant tell u plain and simple whenever an animal is desturbed (kicked out or watever the case) its almost 100% MAN'S FAULT!]
well thats my 2 cents! LOL
