I need to know about a cat going into heat phases. How often will a cat go into heat? I need to get her fixed and I know it can't be done while the cat is in heat. She's an indoor cat, so she isn't going to get pregnant, since no male cat can get to her. There's only one door out of the apartment, so there's not much chance of her escaping and she doesn't try to anyway. I worry about how tiring it is on her. :(

...It'll probably tire YOU out more than her... I think she'll be fine, just a pain in the ass for a while.

Sommelier is Right !! ~~You may go Batty ....But she will be fine. Not to Worry. Good Luck !!

Even though she is not trying to get out yet....keep an eye out . They have a tendency to run under your feet when least expected.

Estrus (heat) in the cat lasts from 2-10 days, the mean being 7. The time between each heat is approximately 2 weeks. Indoor cats kept under lights will cycle all year long, instead of just January through September like outdoor cats. I would make an appointment to get her spayed as soon as you can, so that her behavior won't be an annoyance to you.

Thanks guys,
She is my baby. She's only 6 months old now. I brought her in when she was around 3-4 weeks old. She was very sickly and being eaten alive by fleas. I nursed her back around in a week or 2. She was born to a feral cat. The mother usually won't let you near the kittens. This time she just sat there and watched me pick it up without even a second look. The kitten just rolled over from it's little huddled position and hissed at me without trying to run. She's a fighter. I named her Stormy because she has all the colors of a storm. She actually trained to using a box before I could even get kitty litter. I had to use papertowels torn up at the first couple of days. She's spoiled now. She will hardly eat any hard catfood. I get her to eat some hard food by getting the little treat size of the tartar control bits. She is picky with the canned catfood too. It has to be certain flavors of Friskies and Nine Lives. She has rug tunnels and boxes and little mice and all the milk pull tabs to play with. Most of all she likes to play with our dog Missie. Missie is actually really good with her for a dog who has been the only pet for 9 years now. I know I have to get her fixed soon. I worry about the surgery though. She's had a cough the last few weeks. I think I cleared her though now. Then she has a bit of an unstable hip on the left side. She's not as wild as most kittens would be. When she tries to be, she winds up spending a day or 2 sleeping a lot and not running around even when she's awake.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback.

I could be wrong, but it sounds as if your baby has yet to have her first vet visit. It is probably a good idea to take her for a check up before the spay - that way she can get all of her shots, get wormed and put on heartworm preventative and have her hip checked. It bothers me that she sleeps so much - it would probably be best to get everything checked out. You did a wonderful thing by taking her in, and she sounds very sweet. Hopefully everything works out! -SB

I have a problem with doing the vet bit. We live on a fixed income. It's going to be enough to just afford the spaying. She's really not too sickly right now. I held off to let her grow and gain strength for the surgery. She has come out of the heat for now. Though I thank you for letting me know to expect it again in around 2 weeks. I'm beginning to think she will have the strength. Her cough is cleared and her strength seems to be better. She's climbing the doorjams in the house, the little nut. :) I need to come with a way to cover them with rugs.

Glad to hear that your kitty is doing better.....
I know that it is hard to pay vet bills, and many other important things need to come first, but I would encourage you to maybe start putting a little money away each month for shots, especially rabies. Plus, the vet will most likely require her to be vaccinated before the spay, for the safety of the employees and the other animals in the hospital.
Also, at the vet school that I attend we have a program called the Feral Cat Alliance, where once a month the fourth year students neuter and spay cats for free to people that have trouble affording the surgery. If you have a veterinary school in your area you might check into this.
I hope that everything works out ok!

I know vet care is expensive, but in the long run, it is worth it. They need to be vacinated and this can prevent sickness and further problems down the road. Our neighbor didn't have their dog vacinated and as a result, she keeps getting these bronchial infections that could have been prevented with the vacination. She keeps having to go back to the vet over and over, and these infections can be fatal. It's costing them more money now than if they had just gotten her shots. Your kitty should also be tested and vacinated for Feline Leukemia, which is a fatal disease for kitties. Maybe you could call some vets in your area and explain your situation. Maybe, some of them could offer a payment plan or a discount. Also, some pet stores offer vet care which tends to be less expensive than the regular vet offices. Good luck to you and let us know how she is doing. :)
