Dexter use to eat pellets dry I use keet size zupreem but he just crush and eat little bit of it and the rest is just a waste, but now I pre-crush the pellets almost to a powder then I feed him 1 teaspoon in the morning and 2 teaspoon at night, I mixed it with hot water about 1:2 ratio 1 part pellets and 2 part water then stir it. I eliminated wastes so far and it only take him 3 min to finish each feeding, after he eat the pellet in the morning I put his veggies and half cooked beans (goya brand 7 vaieties in one bag)
in the cage then feed him pellets at night. I also keep nutriberries always in the cage for the whole day and NO seeds for the whole day, after he eats the pellets at night I put mixed seeds in his cage for just 1 hour then I remove it, he knows pretty much that he only have 1 hour to eat seeds but then he was already full after eating pellets so he doesnt consume a lot of mixed seeds, after he eats the seeds he eats his nutriberries before bed time..So there it is, he is now 450-460 grams in 5 1/2 months.

Sounds great - you are doing such a good job with him. It really makes me want to get a baby CAG! But i have two rescued cags already! (plus the other 13 rescues!) so i will just have to vicariously enjoy yours! LOL - but i am green with envy!
The only thing i will say is you may want to look closely at the ingredient list for the nutri-berries, i stopped using them once i read the list. BTW i am working on the recipe for a bit healthier type of 'clone' - i wil post it once i get the kinks worked out.

Yes, sound good! Lol, I'm "green with envy" to both of you! I'd love any grey I could get- wether adult or baby! I was just reading the new stories on www.africannature.com and reading those always makes me wish I had a grey... Someday I will adopt one from the Gabriel Foundation hopefully. The subject "Pellets not wasted" reminds me of my birds nad their pellets. The conures are very messy with theirs, so usually there are millions of tiny crumbs all around. So, my budgies fly around eating the crumbs like little tiny vacuums! It's great. :)

I always empty our birds "dinner meal" from their dishes before I cover them for the night. It is funny - one night I got up from the couch and I noticed all the birds rushed to eat some more. I was wondering why they all decided to snack at the same time - then realized they were keying off me, as it was about the time I start to remove the food and cover them. Pretty funny - how astute they are!
The waste of feeding pellets was bothering me also - I think I will try your idea and crush and add a little warm water. It sure would save on the tremendous waste - I feed the larger pellets and at least 1/2 of each pellet seems to find it's way to bottom of cage. This should help lot.

Yes, sometimes the pellets get very wasted such as when the conures are munching on them and half of each one goes to the bottom of the cage underneath the grate! It's funny because pellets companies always say "less waste and mess than seed" but so far I haven't found that to be true.
parrots are very wasteful in the wild also, i know alot of people who put the "crumbs" out in the backyard for the wild birdies so as not to waste them, and boy do the birdies come! i think i saw an article about it in birdtalk also.

I saw the same article. I think it's great if people can find a way to use the "crumbs".

We have a tray feeder in the yard and lately I've been putting Cleo's old food in there. It does attract a crowd!
