I love dogs so much, but I suffer from asthma-based allergies (mild to severe). It breaks my heart because my husband and I would love to raise a couple of German Shepperds. My husband grew up with them, and he has no allergies. Is there anyone out there who has gone through this situation, or know of someone who has?

Yes ; I am Allergic to Cats & I own 3 !! LOL !! Anyway I have a post on here somewhere about Allergies. I bathe my cats in a product called Allerpet.
I don't dunk them....I put the stuff on a damp rag and wipe the cats down.
I'll see if I can find my previous post . Jan looked up the web-site link for me . :D

There are certain types of dogs that are ok for allergy sufferer's. I know the Bolognese is and I think the Coton is although they are quite expensive. I'm sure someone else will be able to think of more and you could probably search the net and find some other less expensive ones. Oh and by the way, welcome! :)

Welcome! I am allergic to cats, to the point where we had to leave parties early if the host had cats. I would start to feel stuffed up and have a bit of trouble breathing. We have one cat at home which if I didn't pet and allowed only in certain areas of the house I was OK. About 2 years ago in August there were these 2 little orange kittens which started coming into the shop then into office area and finally into my office. They were soooooo cute and loving, and yes I sneezed off and on during the day and suffered the stuffy nose and sometimes itchy eyes. However, eventually the sneezing lessened and the itchy eyes went away. I know that some allergists believe that if you have constant exposure to the allergant that you will grow out of it. In my case, I prayed about it and had constant exposure -- our house cat now snuggles with me on the couch every night and the office cat (we lost one of the kittens) is sleeping on my desk right now. Just thought I'd pass on my experience. I hope that Katmom & Jan's solution works for you.

Are you on any meds? I also have allergy based asthma, I have tons of allergies, inc. very high to cats, and moderate to dogs. I got allergy shots for about 3 years, current med are Advair 250/50 and AllegraD. I have 2 cats and 1 dog and I think i'm doing pretty well. I do think you do become somewhat immune to your own animals, I never even knew I was allergic to dogs till I went to get tested for allergies, cause I grew up with them my whole life. I moved into an apt. for a few years, that didn't allow pets, and after while my immunity to dogs wasn't what it used to be, I would start sneezing and breaking out in hives, from my moms dog, which I never did b-4. It's getting late, but I wanted to say something on this subject, since I know a bit about it, feel free to reply I will ck it in a day or two and reply, or feel free to p.m. me, cause there is more I may beable to answer, but I really need to get some sleep.

I developed asthma after a sever bout of pnuemonia and i alread had 3 cats, i had really bad reactions to them at first, but i couldn't bear to part with them with the help of my trusty inhaler i managed to get used to them and now they even can sleep on the bed and i can breath fine. I haven't needed a cat related puff of the inhaler for 3 years.
