I love the little furry ones. One day I hope to get a miniature collie, a Shelty. I'm also quite fond of Huskies because they look like wolves. Maybe I'll have both? More than likely, I'll have a bunch of mutts that look like my favorite pooches. I think the house would be called 'one hairy place'!:D

Pure-bred speaking I love greyhounds (had an Italian greyhound and want to adopt a retired racing greyhound when I move out of the house!), as well as basset hounds and Alaskan malamutes. However, I've promised myself that I'm only going to keep animals that I've adopted or rescued...so I'm with Casegura on the mixed breeds!

My favorite breed of dog is the Doberman Pinscher. I think dobes are the most adorable things. They have such a bad reputation, but the ones I met are really sweet. Since dogs are so over bred I plan to adopt too. There's a Las Vegas Doberman Pinscher rescue I plan to get my dog from when I move out.

"one hairy place" hahaha... I like that!.... I can certainly relate to it...with 4 dogs in the house, I constantly have a moving floor with all the hair on the tile!! LOL
You guys are all so wonderful for wanting to adopt rescues ;) .
I'd have to say that my favorite breed is the GSD(German Shepherd). I have a 7 yr old purebred rescue that is awesome. There are many purebreds (from good breeders) that end up in rescue if thats what your looking for. I also have 2 rescues that are mixes. To be honest, I'd rather have a mix because they generally have fewer problems than the purebred. Purebreds are known to have more problems with hips, genetic, etc... from bad breeding.... but hey, Im not picky... I'll help anything that comes my way:).
Dobermans are wonderful dogs and make great pets, very loving and loyal. Siberian Huskies are also very loving dogs, but tend to be great escape artists and runners. They require alot of attention, excersize and grooming... they blow their coats all year long. The lady who runs our rescue used to breed and show Sibes years ago and is an expert on this breed. When she found 2 of her tattoo'd Sibe pups in the shelter, she quit breeding and went into rescue. She is an all breed dog rescue, but Sibes are still her life and goes that extra mile to rescue them. I'm also currently fostering a Great Dane. Great Danes are big teddy bears and wanna-be lap dogs. Although their size may be intimidating to us humans, they will be the first ones to run and hide under the bed LOL. I also like Rotties....like the Dobies and Pits, they are great family dogs if in the right hands and its a shame they are branded with the bad reputation.

I have to agree mutts are the best. Ours is a lab, chow, springer spaniel mix and she is the best. And that is so true about the purebreds health. Mutts just seem to be happier and healthier and live forever. Ours is a rescue too. I wish people would be more responsible with their pets. Us rescurers can only rescue so many things!!

My favorite is a golden retriever. I have one and she is full of energy. She is very jumpy, but I love to take her and the blue and gold maccaw for walks.

J,
I guess you can't take your golden to the drive-in! That would be funny though, a car full of birds with an overactive pooch.
Squawks, you sure sound like you have your hands full of fluff and stuff.

Forgive me for sounding snobbish, if you think that's the way I sound, but my favorite breed of dog is any breed of dog that has been treated well; that is, properly.
I love dogs. Any dog that has been shown a lot of love and affection, fed well, exercised, given the amount of space necessary for it's size and/or energy, etc., is going to be a pretty good dog. And good dogs are my favorites. They're pretty good company, too.
I just segued into my new profession: I'm now a published author. One of the short stories I've written is called: Dogs are pretty good company. It hasn't yet been published, but I bet it will be . . . and pretty soon.
If anybody is interested in reading it, let me know. I will require criticism (of the story, not me) and for it, the criticism, to be given as honestly as is possible.
my favorite dog is........
a bassett hound. My mom is almost the biggest Elvis fan ever and because of it i grew up with a bassett hound named Sophie.
just as a side note: the traditional family pet in america is.....a golden retriever or lab. in mexico it is........a parrot (:
also i love weinie dogs.

My favorite is all dogs! I love every breed. I have an Italian grey and a pitbull. They are so different from one another. My buddy ( Grey ) is so layed back, and my Goddi (pit) is so active. They are really good together. It took Buddy a while to accept another "dog" in the house. They are both fixed boys. Buddy has trouble letting us know he needs to go out. Sometimes Goddi copys him. ): But they were both adopted and they do bring some troubles with them. So.......That is that!;)

I have to say my fav. is a pit bull!! We have had ours since it was a puppy and she is the best!! My girls can do anything to her and she doesn't care!! As long as you bring one up right*no fighting!!* than they are the best you can ask for, they will love and protect you!! Believe me if I thought she would hurt one of my children she wouldn't be in my house more or less us having here!!

Redstorm1721: Thanks but the only "book" I had published is a technical training manual. I doubt you would want to read it. I have had a short story published but it is not, as yet, in a book. But I'm working on a book - a novel - not about dogs or pets at all. At the rate I'm going it will be a while. I thank you for your words. Gene_aka_slykafox

my favorite dog(and i keep thre breeds)is without a question is the maremma they are a totally different kind of dog being a livestock/people protection dog they are only a couple of steps from the wild dog gene wise, and have a totally different thought process, they are bred to think with there owner wishes in mind but can work inderpendent of him/her when lone with there charges,i live in rural australia which has foxes(introduced)wild dogs and dingo's and i'yet to lose an animal.i must say a cross bred dog is an unpredicitadle animal in that you get a scramble of behaviour from each bred(you might be lucky to find a good mix,but it's a lottery)with a purebred dog you can make yourself aware of there possible traits.

I just watched a TV special last night about the woman killed by two dogs in SF. Such a sad situation. I guess these dogs are known to be very aggressive. Why anyone would want to keep them as pets in an apt building is beyond me. I do think they are magnificent looking creatures.

They kinda remind me of the Mastiff. We were at Petsmart last weekend and this couple came in with their Mastiff. This is the biggest dog we've ever seen. They weighed him while they were there and this 2 yr old dog weighed 240 lbs. He was HUGE and very sweet. We just fell in love with him. They were looking for a new toy and hubby told them they were in the wrong place.... they need to go to a used car lot LOL. The couple laughed!.

I would have to go with the retired racing greyhounds; I own 2 of them and they are the greatest. In my life, though, I have had a GSD, Collie, 2 cockers, a mix rott. and a ****zu. As you can see I have a love of dogs. I recently got involved with greyhound adoption group. I guess I have a HUGE problem with betting on animals(any that is)for the so- called form of enjoyment that it supposedly brings to us as humans. Go waste your money at the casinos, or better yet. go see a movie for entertainment
Jenny

That's so cool that you have retired racing greyhounds! I've been researching them the past few months, and as soon as I move out of the house I'd like to get one. I used to have a little Italian greyhound who was such a great dog, but it's harder to find those up for adoption....and I'm only going to adopt! There's a greyhound track right by my house, so obviously a lot of them up for adoption around here. You'll have to tell us more about your 'hounds!

Love Bird B,
Cocker Spaniels is my breed that I love. Mostly the American Cocker Spaniel . I do not like how they look at shows because it is unreal. They are great pets. Back in my hey days they were the dog to have. Now days, only big one's I guess. These dogs were the smallest hunting dogs and done their job well. Can you imagine having all that hair and hunting?
Love Bird B
10-30-2003, 09:39 AM
Hi Whitestar,
I fully understand what you mean about how dogs look at shows. It's the human element gone insane with what was better to leave alone.
I'm not familar with the larger breed of Cocker Spaniel. The only thing I know that's large about them are those cute floppy ears they have. I'm also not a hunter, but more the gatherer type. :)

Well, I do love all dogs but my very favorite is the Siberian Husky, if my living arrangements would permit me, I'd have a few more. I can't say enough about my boy's pleasing disposition, and gentelness, everybody who meets him loves him(should have named him Raymond) young & old alike. I understand this is a husky trait. He loves just about everybody, I have to watch out though because he probably would go off with anybody. I ALWAYS keep him leashed or on his secure tie out.

My favorite breed is whatever I'm lucky enough to have.
In years past I have had many different "Heinz 57" varieties as well as 2 Great Danes. I currently have 2 standard poodles and I have to say I really love this breed. They are super intelligent, friendly, great with kids and THEY DON'T SHED!!!!!!:D The last dog I had prior to the SP's was a Samoyed/Collie mix who I lost almost 5 yrs ago to cancer & I swear there is still some of his great white, long fur still hanging around in the nether reaches of this house.:o Every dog I have ever owned has been special in it's own way and will always hold a place in my heart.

I'm like you, it would be hard for me to choose a breed. I rescue for American Brittany Rescue, but any dog or cat in need gets my attention. I belong to a group called Rolling Rescue. It isn't breed specific and it does a world of good getting dogs from shelters to foster homes or from foster homes to forever homes. All it takes is a couple of hours out of your weekend.
Some of you may not believe this, but if you go on a weekend trip, at least one in every 1000 cars you encounter is transporting a dog to a new home. It doesn't matter how old or young you are, as long as you have a valid driver's license. If you would be interested in helping Rolling Rescue or Indiana Transporters please email me and I will be happy to steer you to the right group.
Thank you,

I've had springer spaniels since my college days and love the breed. I've had a field bred springer, Birdy, for a while now. But then I adopted a brittany last year from New Mexico and she is the most unusual elegant dog. Then....I adopted an english setter last December and WOW. She has one of the funniest personalities I've ever seen and very beautiful as well. I guess the sporting breeds are my favorite but I long for an italian greyhound, rhodesian ridgeback, basenji, and a few others so who knows.

I like all breeds of dogs, but their is one breed I love and that is the German Shepherd!!!! I have been told by many people oh you are one of them? Meaning German Shepherd owners think there is only one breed of dog " The German Shepherd" I often ask them "have you ever owned one?" and they say "no" I then tell them "well maybe if you owned one you would understand why". My parents had many a breed as I was growing up, and I liked all the dogs but once I laid eyes on the german shepherd I was sold, they were gracefull yet ruggid dogs and as I got older and read about the breed I became more fond of them. I purchased my very first dog when I was 17 years old and guess what? Yes it was a German Shepherd, I was so happy I have never looked back or considered another breed, I love their looks, intelligence and loyaltiy and they are the most versitile dog!! I FOUND MY BREED!!!! Now I am not trying to sell anyone on the breed although it may sound so, when you find a breed that you are happy with stick to it!!!! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE, AND THANK GOD WE DO NOT ALL FEEL THE SAME OTHERWISE THE WORLD WOULD BE A BORING PLACE!!!!

The bigger and furrier, the better!!! I used to deliver pizzas and I used to LOVE to deliver to this one guy (besides the fact that he gave $10 tips, no joking!) because he had this dog that was half german shepherd, half great dane. It was the most gorgeous dog I've ever seen, it was 6 months old and his head was up to my hip. Had the sweetest personality, too! :p As far as purebreds go tho, for looks I'd say Newfoundlands, but I love Golden Retrievers' temperaments.

MY fav now has to be pits also...Dante was a pit that at 6mo old was being beatin as to make him a fighting pit...lucky for me he ran and after 3months trusted me enough to let me take him to the vet where I had him "fixed". Because of the "fixing" the original owner no longer wanted him and now my 18 month old son has his best friend, that he can climb on, pull on his lips, touch his eyes, ANYTHING, and he just lays there. When Dante's had enough he moves. He is ....my baby, the first one i had.

Hmmm~ My favorite breed...well I had a wonderful SharPei named Asia for 13 years! I unfortunately had to put her to sleep last April. I never had any huge problems with her that the breed can have, but a mass was found in her stomach and there wasn't anything that could be done...it all happened so fast...we miss her! We also have a shepard/lab/retriever mix and I honestly believe Asia helped us find our other pound puppy after she passed away...'Chaos'...our pit/lab mix. My Cody...the shepard mix was lost after Asia was gone...he was just depressed! He wouldn't go upstairs..it was awful...and also my kids...they cried everyday and they begged me to go get Cody another friend....well...off to the human society we went (only about 2 months later) and Chaos unbelievably did something that only Asia would have done! That was it...he was ours and he came home with us. My sister couldn't even believe it...the only words she could say were..."OH MY GOD! He just did an 'Asia Move'!" It was just something she would do that made me laugh and she knew it....if she wanted a treat and I had to say no...because she already had 100 of them <smile> ... she would sit directly infront of me and slowly tilt her head the entire way back....her head straight up in the air...her wrinkles flowing backward and she would literally stare at me upside down for a good 30 seconds~well, as soon as we went up to Chaos's cage...he never once barked, only wagged his tail, looked at me, turned around and did an "Asia Move"~so...now that my short story became very long....I love and always will love the SharPei...but there is something to be said for mixed pups. Maybe it is the 'pound puppy' in them?? But they seem so thankful...Cody has been much happier with his new friend... Chaos is keeping Cody young and it's great to see them play and wrestle~~There isn't a day I don't think of Asia and if I say her name in a conversation, Cody will perk his ears...
As bad a rap as pits get...Chaos is here to strike them all down! As I sit here looking at him right now with my son...all curled up laying, watching T.V!! Both my pound puppies are very affectionate and loving...Chaos can look scary...but it's only because when people see him they immediately say..OH a pit bull! Then I tell them he is part lab and most people still worry about the pit part...until they meet him! He was very abused as a puppy, yet he is very loving and trusting with us and he loves his big furry brother Cody and his human twin brother and sister! Where Cody goes...Chaos is sure to follow, where the twins go, Chaos is sure to follow!
I always dreamed of owning an Irish Wolfhound though!;)
Oh hec~~give me one of each...my kids would be thrilled and so would I:)
i like goldens and beagles and labs and mini schnauzers and shetland sheepdogs and cocker spaniels and kuvaszok [sp?] and xoloitzcuintlis [sp?] and cavaliers [here's to you, blenheimbeau] and border collies and border terriers and jack russell terriers and siberian huskies and irish setters and oh dear, the list is getting too long... :D

My favorite dogs have been my own. The first dog (and first pet) I ever had was an austrailian shepard mix named Molly. She was the best dog and she was so smart. One thing about her being so smart had to do with her and my cats food bowls.. You might think it's stupid but every other dog I've had would not leave my cats food bowl alone. Molly knew which bowl was hers and would not touch my cats food for anything.. Maybe it was because Cotton was so mean.. Not sure, but she was smart because of a lot of other reasons also.. Another favorite dog of mine is the dog I have now. She's a black lab mix and she's the nicest, smartest, most affectionate, and playful dog ever! Her mother was a registered lab and her father looked like a black lab but was not registered because there was some golden retriever in his blood from way back. She's almost full grown and she's just a big lap dog. She's also very very well-mannered. I posted some pictures of Z, my girlfriend Jessica and I in the new members section.

German shorthair, definitely. A dog that loves to please, is highly intelligent and easily trained, very affectionate, and after a long day of hiking/hunting/camping/swimming/beach bumming/anything active and outdoors loves nothing more than to curl up with its owner. Oh, and did I mention beautiful?!?! I really do love my 60-lb lap dog. This is my first dog, and the only breed I'll ever get...ok, except maybe an English pointer or a Viszla, but it has to be a pointer, and preferably a German shorthaired one!

Make great lap dogs but also love to get out and hike, play with kids, swim, travle, You name it they are up for it. Sheltie's are great to. I rasie both breeds on a very small scale. I hope to start showing real soon.

bisquick, I must agree, german shorthair pointers are beautiful dogs. i'd probably have one, but I've got a thing for big dogs. I've never really had what you would call an appropriate "lap dog" unless you count a 90-140 lb dog that lies on my lap. Yes, the smallest dog I've ever had weighs 90lbs. He's a part mastiff part boxer, and possibly part pittbull mix named Mac, and yes, he lays on my lap, along with another 3 laps at a time!
I still have to go with mastiffs or rotts as far as favorite breeds but I must say that mutts are often the best dogs. I've had plenty of Mutts including Mac, Zippy, Duck, Gypsy, and Lena, and all were some of the BEST dogs I've ever had. I think that's because they get a lot of the strong genes from the 2 different dogs and together the genes often make a stronger, smarter dog. U Gotta Love a Mutt!
But I don't have a set-in-stone favorite, because it often depends not on the breed, but the individual dog. For instance, Rotts have a horrible rep as a breed, but the smartest dog I ever had was a rott named Reba. She was WONDERFUL with children, and she would litterally melt into your arms. Throughout her entire life she never growled except when we told her to. She was an amazing dog and I don't think I'll ever find a dog quite like her. She was my one special dog. I think there's one special dog out there for everyone, and she was mine. Sure I love all of my dogs, and they all love me, but Reaba was that one dog and we had a very special bond, and I don't think there will ever be another dog in my life like Reba.

I love german shepards, boxers, and small dogs! I was at a hotel and there was a boston terrier! I like them too! (my dog is a german shepard and boxer. I know she sounds big but she is only 40 pounds)

I love almost all dogs , but my favorite breeds are the ones I have of course, a chocolate lab and a pug. They are so different, but such a terrific balance. One is sweet, loving and very playful. The other is neurotic, adorable and cuddly, sheds like crazy and takes forever to "do his business", but I look forward to coming home every day to see their beautiful faces and the love and happines they shower us with when we walk in the door. Cant imagine life without either of then!!!!

I love any breed but I really like Boxers, Bull Terriers, Doberman Pinschers and German Shepherds. I've only owned one of the breeds out of them but I'd really like to own the others some day.

I also really like the great paranese. They are absolutely adorable dogs! And big! I met one up at a store a few days ago and it was the sweetest thing!
I still like mutts though. My dog's a mutt. He's actually lucky to be alive! One rainy day while driving to work I spotted him and a black chow running around but I saw a lady out there and figured they were hers. On my way back from work 8 hours later, they were still out and running all over the street!I got out of my car and started knocking on doors trying to find where they lived. I eventually went to a house where this lady said that the black chow was hers but that she'd never seen the puppy in her life. Well, I knew the puppy wouldn't last long out there because he was running in front of cars the whole time. So I called him over and he came real quickly. When he reached me I noticed how bad he was shivering(it was a full storm by that time). So I immediately carried him to the car and took him home. He laid on my lap the whole way. He got along with my other dogs OK so that wasn't a problem. The next day I took him to the vet and he had worms HORRIBLY! Poor baby. So I got him the shots he needed(there were a lot) And took him back home.I searched the adds and looked fo signs for a lost dog but found nothing. I didn't place adds about a found dog knowing that anyone could claim that it was their dog. After a few weeks we had grown very attached to him and had decided to keep him. We took him to the vet and got him nuetered, and baught him a dog liscence tag. Then one day, while taking him for a walk, some kids came over and started petting him and asked where I got him and what kind he was ect. As I said that I had found him a woman walked over and said it was her dog! I turns out that the lady who said the chow was hers but the puppy wasn't was the womans' daughter and that she didn't like the puppy and so she said it wasn't hers hoping I'd take it. I was not going to give my baby away now though. Besides, when Mac saw her his tail went betwen his legs and he hid behind me.(this was wierd 'cause he was never shy before). After confronting her with all of the bills we'd payed to get him healthy, the woman said plainly that we could keep him and she was just glad he wasn't dead.I was amazed at how little she seemed to care about poor Mac. But it didn't matter anymore, he was mine, and he still is, and he's a great dog. And I love him! :)

Awe! I love pitts! They have such a bad rep but they're wonderful dogs if trained right! THey have a bad rep because people who want a scary and mean dog want something that already looks scary. A poodle could be trained to be just as nasty as a pitt but no1 buys a poodle to be a scary watch dog 'cause they don't look mean. It's not the pitts' fault they look scary. It's so wrong to say that that type of dog has a bad rep and is a nasty breed when it's all the owners' fault!
