Perky does not like hummus and probably not fond of the celery it was on either.

She LOVES corn on the cobb! I just found that out tonight. There was corn all over her beak and face!

well - lucky for perky there is a lot more choices than hummus (that's chick peas right?) i like it from a good greek restaurant not for from Denver VA - when i go there i have to get a gyros and hummus. The Locals have a Greek Fair every year to celebrate their culture and the food is great of course - all the lady's have a sort of rivalry going about who makes the best baklahva (sp?) there is a considerable number of greeks in this part of the country. It is kinds neat, i am not sure why it is though.
I mean there is a fairly high population of Japanese in Colorado and Wyo. and for the most part it is because of land given in reparation for incarcerating them in WW2. I think Denver had a good population of chinese, japanese and others since building the 'iron horse' -
I just love to hear about other cultures, what they think is important, etc plus the food! i don't think i have ever found an ethnic food i didn't like! if there is any drawback to living here, it is that of the three resstqaurants non of them can cook better than i can! oops don't tell my friend Annie.... she owns one of the restaurants! So big cities have it there! armenian one might japanese the next, then german nigerian .... you get the picture. I LOVE GOOD FOOD!
Aanyway sorry for digressing... thhis ended up having nothing to do with little Perky......
Just the rantings of a mad woman! LOL

Yum, yum Crazeemama!! I love Greek food so much I went to live there for awhile!! It was for the food and all that dancing! All cultures fascinate me too, especially their food, LOL! I love accents and enjoy watching foreign films. Wouldn't it be fun to have a French and/or Italian speaking parrot? First we get them hooked on the food so then they'll have to tell us if they want more crepes.

Crazeemama, I'm now hungry, LOL! Here's a question I've been wanting to ask everyone and thought to put it under questions but it's too weird for that-

Does anyone ever feel guilty cooking chicken? I made some the other day and was convinced Perky knew I was eating one of her relatives. I thought about becoming a vegetarian again but that chicken sure was delicious. :-\

B:

Want to know something....The night we brought Snickers home (our first bird)..I made roasted chicken for dinner. Well...to make a long story short, my family and I just sat there and looked at the chicken on our plates and couldn't eat it. We felt so wierd eating chicken after having a pet bird in the house.

That didn't last long....we eat chicken regularly and even give Marcel, our Pionus, chicken wings..he loves them.

But, I know the feeling you have, it happened to us, too.

Actually our birds like chicken and some other people on this site mention feeding chicken to their birds.

I think chicken wings/bones etc is ok once iin a while -perhaps more often for SChAVON because she ISN'T Feeding her bird pellets, I would also say if you do add cheees, try to make it sswiss or mozerella as they care lower in fat.
I do beleive birds are 'oportunistic omnivores' and as such do eat some meat, but it is probably extremely lean (not corn fed beef!) and probably just bits left after the original eater is finished. SO probably not a whole lot.
Also i think the 'head size' rule is a measure for amounts. i.e. size up the portion you are going to feed your bird relative to the size of his head. Now would you eat a proportional amount of that food as a normal serving?
I think that has helped me as far as quantity is soncerned.
SCHAVON - the first time i gave my mac a chicken bone he tossed it. SO i broke it open for him after that he knew what to do. My CAGS seem to know exactly what to do with tthem and the Goffins won't even touch them. So every bird is different. There is alot of nutrition in the marrow, so i would definitely try again.

Crazeemama,

I also try not to eat anything bigger than my head. That's a great tip!

Crazeemama,
Would you say that goffins are much more pick about their food then a macaw? Angel seems to be the pickiest and will watch the other birds to see if they eat something new I give them before she will even beak it.

Goffins are not very adventurous with food, at least that is my experience at this date. My little Severe is a GARBAGE GUT - so is the Sun Conure. Even the CAGs will try something within a day or two. Oliver has still not eaten the grain/legume/yams mix that ALL the other birds, even the 'keets just LOVE..... Oh i will keep offering it.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one that felt bad about eating chicken, LOL! Thanks Mrs. Birdy.

Crazeemama, you must have one fun house! Does your dog ever eat anything that's left over, or rejected from your flock? Perky's picky. I need to get some kind of other pet to clean up after her. Another bird?

That yam mix sounds wonderful! Did you post that recipe here? I'm off to look for it, or something similar.

Cheers,
Lovie B :)

lovie b-
Every now and then Buddy decides to scavenge the birds pellets but a time or two he has gotten pretty sick i thik from the change in protien. Old dogs seem to have trouble with that. So he pretty much leaves them on the floor now.
But he can't wait to come back in the house after the g-kids leave! He know that is the BIG SCORE.
I thinki i did write it up - not really a recipe i also change the veggie i use in it but the fave seems to be butternut squash or yams.

Hey- reading about all that greek food makes me hungry as well! I LOVE baklahva!!!! About eating chicken, I went vegetarian about three months ago. I stumbled across some animal rights and vegan/vegetarian websites and others, and came across some articles about how the poor animals are raised and their living conditiosn and everything.... It's way too sad for hte most part and I felt so so guilty, so I gave eating animals up! It grosses me out too seeing a live chicken or pig walking around "fresh" and imagining taking a bite out of them right then and there... eeeew! I especially don't like it how animals are being bred to increase egg and meat production in expense of their health. :( Also, being vegetarian decreases the probability of getting certain diseases... About BIRDS eating chicken, I only gave mine it a few times anyway because in the wild parrots for the most part don't eat meat, except for the Keas who will sometimes strip the remaining meat off of carcasses. Speaking of keas....Has anyone ever seen a real one?? I did today, and they are one of the most amazing creatures ever! The sound they make is the coolest thing too!

Becoming a vegetarian is a wise and healthy choice ONLY if you understand nutrition, the combining of in complete proteins etc. Of course you have to know what to eat to get your nutritional requirements met. Of course young women have a higher need for calcium, iron, and folic acid. THESE things have an extreme importance, during pregnancy and although you are not ready now, chances are someday ytou will be. SO don't just think that eating salad is enough. make wise choices.

Wow- i sound like iam some body's gramma LOL!
