Hi Jan,

Keep up the good work. Have you kept any of them for yourself? I would have a house full of rescued pets.

Hi!

Well.... yes I've kept a few... we have 3 rescue dogs, 3 rescue cats, 3 parrots(2 of them rescues), 2 iguana's(1 rescue), 2 Bearded Dragons and a 100 gallon fish aquarium. We are also fostering a rescue dog until we can find her a forever home. Yup, we live in a zoo.... but what a wonderful life it is :)

We here have 7 rescued cats.

One from as far as Puerto Rico... went down on vacation, brought back a kitten who walked in front of our car while we were driving in the mountains!

Rescuing is the way to go.

Rescue is the only way to go! :)

We went hunting quite a few years ago in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We hiked up on horseback for about 7 miles to our camp. There was a cat there that we all fell in love with. I guess someone left it up there on a prior hunting trip. My brother-in-law didn't have the heart to leave him, so he carried this cat down the mountain (on his horse) in his jacket. The cat had urinated all over him by the time we got back to our motor home LOL. He traveled well in the motor home all the way back to CA and lived with my brother-in-law until a few years ago when he passed away due to old age. He was an awesome cat and will be missed dearly.

yes, rescuing is the way to go! i prefer to take something that is not friendly, it is the challenge and then the joy to see the turn around. Jan, there is a couple who live down the street from me who have rescued 8 parrots and 3 dogs, brooke is a dog trainer so she implements that technique to her parrots, and she was on animal planet "Pet Star" with her scarlet Dutchie, and Dutchie rollerskated, when the show aired she called to tell me it was on and boy i was sitting here all by myself screamming and hollering for Dutchie since i knew her personally. it was so cool, her husband went on another episode with their i can't for some reason remember what kind of macaw you call him, he is all green with a big puff of red above his beak like the scarlet, anyway mark went on the show with him and one of their dogs to do a trick, they didn't win but it was sure fun watching them on tv.

Wow, how cool is that! Was it a military macaw? Yes, rescuing is the way to go. From now on I'm only going to adopt my pets. I wish everyone would do that too. It was so sad, today at the vet clinic an absolutely gorgeous medium-hair black and grey manx cat was being spayed, and she was pregnant with five kittens, which sadly had to be aborted. She was a rescue and needed a home, but there's not that many people out there who decide to adopt cats (or other animals) from a rescue instead of just get them from a friend who let their cat have kittens, so the poor babies had to be killed. I agree with you Teri, it's so neat to adopt an animal and then see the progress it's made!

That is so kewl!! Celebrities living right down the street!!. I saw the episode with the Scarlet!. We love Animal Planet in this house.

Jenny, we have an epidemic of feral cats in our area . There is a big discussion on whether to start up a mobile spay/neuter clinic to try to resolve this problem. We also have a high-kill shelter. They kill everything that comes in and they're not rescue friendly. We cant save them all, but we try... one life at a time. I am a big-time advocate of spaying and neutering!.

I also agree.... watching these animals transform into wonderful loving pets is the ultimate!!. Just takes a little time, patience and love and what you get back is so much more :)

They kill everything that comes in and they're not rescue friendly

:-( Now THAT is sad. :-(

But what some people will do to animals is also very sad.

Our cat Eli was found by MrsPetLover while she was on a short trip to a wawa one day. Two kids were tossing this little 4 week old black kitten from one to another. Long story shortened, she went for milk and came back with a kitten. He is an amazing cat and a very loved member of our family. He's black and loves his morning brushing in the sun by the window.

Our cat Ben is more loyal than a dog. We found him in Puerto Rico; in the middle of the road in front of us. The roads are narrow there and he was almost smooshed when another car came to pass us after we had stopped for him. When we got him back to our hotel and looked him over, half of this little kitten had been shaved; from the middle of his back to his tail! How crazy?!?! Well... 5 (or 6?) years later... more loyal than a dog for sure... and has been so since the day we found him.

--- A funny aside to that is that the hotel owner where we stayed had recently taken in a puppy... which we were considering adopting (we're not sure why...) Well, we had Ben and the dog spent the night in the room with us. When we woke up in the morning, the dog had dug threw all of Ben's litter and drag his you-know-what all around the room. So we thank Ben all the time for unmasking the dog's true nature before it was too late! *chuckle*

--- Another funny aside; Ben's original name was PJ (we're not sure why!) but when we finally found an english speaky vet, he told us that Bendito was slang for "poor thing" but meant something along lines of "lucky" ... and so PJ was renamed Ben! :-)

And... Our newest, Stevie, I found running down a hilly road in 100 degree weather 2 summers ago. I saw him and said, whatever that is, it doesn't need to be in the middle of the road... expecting to get of out car and move him off the road. But when I picked him up, his legs kept going. I noticed he was bleeding from his mouth and panting and his legs were just going. He was in shock. I got him in the car and handed him to MrsPetLover and said "I don't know if we can help him, but we'll try" ... and off to the vet. The vet, (or us), couldn't begin to guess what happened to this poor thing... they thought he was going to be blind from head trama.

Stevie just passed around 15 pounds. He's all black and just like a little kid. While he's not blind, he definitely doesn't see so good out of one eye... we think he just used that to hook us into letting him stay (we had 6 by the time we found him!!) He is an amazing cat. Very talkative, very very cuddly and extremely affectionate.

Well... that's all for the rescue stories tonight. :-)

The cat my brother-in-law brought home from Jackson Hole was named Eli also!.

I'm a sucker for happy endings:). Wonder why Ben was shaved? weird. Sounds to me like Stevie may have been hit by a car. They are lucky they found you. And good thing you found out about the dog... with 7 cats... you'd have alot of you-know-what decorating your house LOLOL. Sounds like you have wonderful fur-kids.

About six months after we lost our cat, Danielle - I went to supermarket and came home with a little yellow and white kitten that we named April, the month we adopted her.

We have had 3 cats over my married life and they were all great in their own way. However, April holds a very special place in my heart.

I had gone back to work and my son, Jason told me off a dog (boxer mix) that would chase him home after he got off the bus. Think Jason was about 9 or 10 at the time. He only mentioned this problem once and when I thought to ask if it had happened again - he said yes. Why didn't you tell me about it happening again? Jason replied that April had taken care of it. My mouth dropped when J explained that April had taken to meeting him at the bus and when this dog threatened J again the cat had jumped on the dogs neck area and swatted the "hell" out he the dogs face and ear area as the dog ran down the hill. Apparently the cat held on and rode the dog continuing the paw lashing all the way down the hill. Never again did J see the dog.

Also, April would meet Jason after school and keep him company especially through the hard teenage years. She would be there when I could not...................and just be there for him. April still seeks out Jason when the three of us are at home and will go to J before greeting us - every single time. April really loves Jason so much - just as if J was her kitten.

ANIMALS ARE JUST SO GREAT! I WOULD NEVER HAD BELIEVED IT OF A CAT ------ A DOG MAYBE -----BUT A CAT AS PROTECTOR.....

April was there through all of the bad times I had with everyone picking on me. I have outgrown needing her for that though, because I will defend myself to whatever end necessary. This past Saturday I was out bowling with a friend and my father. The people using the lane next to us were drinking pretty heavily and one of the larger guys there threw his ball down my lane and then proceeded to laugh about it. So I made the decision that I would show him how it feels. I waited for him to be up again and threw a ball down his lane completely screwing up his score the way he did mine. Had he appologised for what he did instead of laughing about it, I would have let it go. He got very angry and started saying to his friends that he was going to beat me up after bowling. I was not scared but my dad wanted me to leave a bit early. See if it came to a fight I know that he was bigger than me and I probably would not have won fairly, but I have my own ball that weighs 16 pounds and a self-defensive blow to the temple would have defeated him easily. I know that it can kill also but I have to defend my self and I will not be intimidated like when I was in school. Needless to say the big dumb idiot was lucky and my father was able to convince me to leave early. I don't like violence but a wise man once said "If you want to push peace, you must be willing to back war.".

Those were all such wonderful stories.

Especially D and J....your April sounds like one amazing feline. It is really something how she thinks of Jason as her own.

Pets can do amazing things! and bring out the best is us all.

Roseanne,
I agree - animals are wonderful. I still am amazed how April considers Jason one of her own! April also acts like that with Amber and the birds. I think we are all her kittens.

What neat stories!!! Mr.PetLover, your cats are all so lucky you adopted them. Especially the little Puerto Rican kitty! When I was there I was horrified by how the animals were kept. Dogs are either chained up most of the day, or left to roam about the streets to fend for themselves. Very few did I see that were taken care of well. They were fed scraps of raw meat which smelled so bad! The cats were left to roam and fend for themselves as well, and it was so sad. Then I saw many dwarf bunnies kept in cages outside in the open with absolutely nothign to hide under for shelter. I also saw horses, donkeys, and cows chained up on by the side of busy streets with their ribs totally showing! And most of the animals I saw looked sick. So, that's why I think that little kitten is extremely lucky! April sounds like an amazing, wonderful girl. How fortuneate you are to have her as part of your family!

I'm new here and don't know how to get the right page to introduce myself. Anyway, I'm an animal lover - I have a dog and three cats. My son and I volunteer at a Rehabitat center which breeds Barn Owls and releases them in the wild. They also have kangaroos, fox, eagles, etc, some of them having been wounded and will be released. They breed bearcats (there are around 250 left in the world.

I have a question for dog lovers. Where can I find a good shaver for my long-furred pup? He likes to be shaved in the summer, and I'd like to cut his fur myself. I went on the web and can't find anything. Anyone know?

Hi Jemoore,

That is so wonderful you and your son volunteer at a Rehabitat Center!. It must be very rewarding.
I'm not sure where to find shavers, maybe you could contact a few groomers and see if they can help you. Good luck.

I am a groomer in Littleton colorado and i am new to petlovers but i have a web site for the person looking for clippers for her dog. It is called wwwpetedge.com formerly newengland serum i went on their web site and both addresses work www.newenglandserum.com but i would make sure if you have never used clippers before to read the instructions well and also buy a bottle of clipper cool so you do not clipper burn your dogs skin, the clippers get very hot especially if you are clipping a big long haired dog and you spray the clippers when they begin to get hot and stop if they get really hot. I really like my Oster clippers and recomend this brand for quality and part replacement. just your basic clipper should do for your size of job they run about $100.00 dollars plus shipping. Good Luck!!!!

I also forgot to add on my last reply about the dog clippers you will also need to order blades for your clippers. Here is where things get a little more complicated. Depending on how long your dogs hair is and if your dog is matted at all is the deciding factor for what size blade you will need. Blades are very expensive and will need sharpening as well. I am not sure how much you really want to do this yourself but i recomend letting a profesional clip your dog especially if your looking at once or twice a year. As i said in an earlier post about clipper burns and taking care not to cut your dogs skin with your blade can become a big job especially if your dog is not used to the clippers or if you are not used to the cilppers and especially if your dog has long hair(BIG JOB) Anyway i just thought i would warn you because you need to know what you are getting into before you spend the money on clippers and other supplies. Good Luck!!!!!

Hi AHamilton!

Great website, you have lots of wonderful stuff!. Any advise on how to make my dogs stop shedding LOL. I have a German Shepherd, Rott/GSD mix and Lab/mix..... and a floor that constantly moves because of all the hair!!. I can brush and fill garbage bags full and still have hair to spare LOL.

I have a question for you.... what dog shampoo would you recommend?. I have used many.... for fleas, dry skin, etc..... I've even used Johnsons baby shampoo because its mild. Always looking for something better and healthy!. Thx.

Its nice to have a groomer on board ;)

Hello Squawksx3
I am glad I can help out, I had a Germen Shephard and she was a great dog!!! She also had a shedding problem!! I recomend a tool you can find at petsmart or any pet store called a Shedding Blade it is a u shaped blade with a handle and works great for Sheppard hair or any short to medium length hair. You want run it with your dogs hair not against, and run it along your dogs body in quick strokes and include his rear end. But be prepared for lots of hair, I do this about 3 seperate times and then give a great bath and blow the excess hair out with a strong air force dryer. I dont know about where you are from, but in denver we have do it yourself dog washes and they even have force dryers that blow the hair out. Groomers can also do this if you can not do it yourself, but i do recomend getting a shedding blade any way for inbetween grooming visits. Any natural shampoo with aloe vera is great and always use a good conditioner it helps with the shedding, just be sure to rinse well or the conditioner will dry out their skin and cause itching or irritation. I hope this information will be helpful, please let me know if you have any more questions. P.S there is also a supplement that is called Missing Link it is a powder that you add to your dogs food, It has Omega 3 fatty acids and other essential vitamins which will help your dogs coat, this will also help with shedding. Good Luck!!!!!!

Thank you A.Hamilton.... and sorry for the late response... been very busy lately. I did get the Shedding Blade and it is wonderful. I live in central CA and we have a fairly new Pet Extreme that has do-it-yourself dog washes.. its so kewl!. When I cant get to Pet Extreme, I bathe the dogs in the hose outside in the summer and use the shower in the winter... yup... major hair down the drain... but we deal with it LOL.
We have been using Missing Link for years. We love it. It really gives the rescues that come in a jump start to better health. I personally use the one for large boned dogs... mine are all 70 lbs and over.
I hope to see you more on this site, I would love to pick your brain more for the sake of my fur-kids ;)

Thank you again :)
