10. Lassie Come Home (movie and book)

9. The Dog Who Wouldn't Be (novel by Farley Mowat, about a very eccentric dog.)

8. Black Beauty (movie and book. One of my favourite horse stories)

7. The Black Stallion (I'd almost not put it on the list but the scenes on the island are absolutely wonderful, worth watching over and over)

6. Traveller (by Richard Adams, the story of Robert E. Lee's horse)

5. The Plague Dogs. (NOT the movie but the book by Richard Adams. It's an excellent to my thinking depiction of how dogs might think and talk, and while it is a sad story it's got one of the best endings I've ever read in any novel.)

4. Watership Down (again by Richard Adams, about rabbits of all things. Amazing--I mean where I last lived the jackrabbits were a plague upon my house, eating my strawberry and blueberry plants no matter what I did--mesh, bloodmeal, whatever..--but I loved this book.)

3. Gorillas in the Mist (Dian Fossey's testament, very good story about an abrasive but amazing woman.)

2. Call of the Wild (Jack London's story about a dometicated dog from Santa Barbara recruited unexpectedly as a sled dog. It was one of the first animal stories I read for myself, and is still one of my favourites.)

1. Babe (yeah, the story about the little pig. I absolutely loved this one. I watch it every year.)

How about the rest of you?

Recently read Plague dogs ..really sad..

Always loved Black Beauty as a child

Gorrilas in the mist is inspirational and I think Dian Fossey deserved more recognition for her work.

But the story that makes me choke even by thinking about it is Greyfriers Bobby... When my son married in Edinburgh we took the time to visit his memorial..

... didn't you love the ending to The Plague Dogs though?

I can't remember if the book ended differently from the movie? In the book does a fisherman pull them out of the water and take them to the island? I remember watching the movie and thinking they drowned and that the island Rowf was talking about wasn't actually there, but either a figment of his imagination or just a way to keep Snitter motivated to keep swimming.

The movie ends differently from current editions of the book; the original edition had them swimming out to what might turn out to be "The Isle of Dog" and ending there. Maybe a more realistic ending but it's not like we don't know what happens to most strays and all that. Besides the ending the book has now is so utterly good and wonderful it's one of my favourite moments in literature.

Right now I'm reading Traveller which is about General Robert E. Lee's horse. Very good book, it's funny reading about the Civil War from the often confused point of view of this horse.

We can't forget Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

This movie, and the sequel, is the stuff of my childhood. I owned the "Lost in SF" version on VHS and completely played it out.

I really like Balto too. Actually haven't seen many of the classics (unless CUJO counts...? ;)

I just watched a part of Eight Below today (can't remember the channel it was on), though I think I like Snow Dogs more as it is much funnier.

Another movie I want to see sometime is Chihuaua. I've seen previews for the movie and it seems to be funny, though I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet. I did see Marmaduke recently, though.

Shadow by Michael Morpurgo :- It is a story of an ordinary Afghan boy, Aman and his mother who became the victims of the war in Afghanistan. They face difficulties and discrimination against their Hazara identity.

Yeah, I don't think Cujo counts . . .but I haven't watched a lot of movies staring animals, I love horror movies and I get more upset when they kill an animal than a person.

Besides movies and tv shows, I also like watching viral videos about animals on youtube (especially ones on huskies and malamutes). Sometimes I will share them on my blogs too or comment on them. Some of my favorite youtube videos includes: swearing parrots (those are pretty funny), Mishka the Husky (she even has a husky sister now, named Laika), videos about giraffes, as well as some of the videos about cats. I also liked watching viral videos about pets and animals via "Stupid Videos" when they were airing on the comcast on demand network (though it appears Comcast took down that channel a few months ago as I can no longer find the channel under the "cutting edge section", where the channel would normally appear). BTW, what are some of your favorite viral videos?

hi what books do people like?

you mentioned Watership Down, and that is an excellent book. so is Tarka the Otter.
I just love the story about the Greyfriars Bobby. I have been there in Edinburgh to see the grave of Bobby - they buried him close to his master!

For a really intriguing story about a pair of jackdaws and a cat see:

I loved Oliver and Company.....Then again, I'm from New York originally so I might be biased.....but that's probably not it. It was just a great musical cartoon.

You know, one thing I have been following on youtube lately are the videos about Mishka and Laika the Huskies. Mishka is the famous husky known for her "talking" (such as the "I love you video").
