Hello Birdgirl
I have a sengal,Parrot and a budgie. I love my birds and I am so happy to have them. Sunni,my parrot is only 3 months and soon to be 4. She already says hi and hello. She is very beautiful. My birds have there own room with tv and large play area. ( spoiled ) I love Greys they are beautiful birds. They are known to go to one person and love them very much. It is best to try and have him,or her be with alot of people,so she can become good with all. They are great talkers one of the very best. Some allthough won't talk. Its all up to your bird. Senegal's also tend to go for one person and love them the most. Sunni is "my Bird" But loves my husband as well. She is pickey with whom she is with. I try to get her to sit with alot of people, but she tends to like who she wants to LOL. Anyway am so glad to hear from you and can't wait to hear more! Gail

I know it might sound funny but I kinda want a one person bird.
I have been reading all the books I can find on parrots/greys for the past five years and know a lot about them but I really want to hear storys about Timnehs theres only so much you can learn from books.

If I were you i'd check out a couple other bird boards. I know there are timenehs on http://theparrotperch.com also birdtalk might have some. toolady.com may have a good timeneh place as well.

I know what you mean about having him or her a one person bird. But if something ever happens to you ( God Forbid ) like you had to go somewhere you will need someone to be able to handle your bird.... Anyway I am sorry I am not able to tell storys about greys I have a senegal and budgie's but I am sure someone will be able to help you out. I do know that they are very smart birds and love attention. As well as give it. Have fun with your new bird.......:)

yes I know I will need some one to take care of him/her once in a while but there are six people in my house and no matter how hard I try the bird is going to be around more then just me and if I know my family (and I do) my bird will most likly bond with my mom or my little sister and I'm just kinda trying to make the chance of this less then what it would be if I let the family play with him/her all they wanted. I don't know if you get what I'm saying (some times I don't even know).
I've been to toolady.com(petparrot) and birdtalk(never posted) and have gottin a lot of help but a lot of people only have Congos and I never hear any Timneh storys.

Hi all! I am slowly figuring out how to use this new format, thought i have to admit, I liked it the old way much better! (you know the old saying- "old dogs can't learn new tricks" not that I'm that old or anything,but...) :) Anyway, I have had a full day of parrots at a big bird expo that I went to here, as well as added a new member to my flock today- an eight week old Dutch Blue lovebird! (actually my moms) "Well, to the subject about Timnehs and Congos, Timnehs are generally more outgoing and not quite as shy, and also, both species can be many-person birds if socialized enough. Has anyone heard of Maggie Wright? (a parrot author to those who haven't) She has two greys, and takes them with her to speeches and many other places, and both love other people. There can be a huge crowd of people, and neither mind a bit. It all depends on what things you get them used to, in my opinion anyway!

I wish everybody on this list could have been there too! Unfortuneately, for you and everybody else it would be a long drive because it's in the good old "Sunflower State" (KS) Has anybody else gone ot bird shows in their area? I'd love to hear about them! In the back of BirdTAlk is a list of all the upcoming events in different states. Anyway, our new little lovebird is taming down so well and very quickly! When we first put her in her cage, she just kind of clung to the bars in one spot for a little while, but after a couple of minutes started exploring nad playing with all of the toys! She's such a fun bird and just a cute little baby so far. When the breeder tried to get her out of her cage, she acted like she was scared of hands and not used to people, but she's very tame and not at all afraid of sitting on our hands, thank goodness! We still don't have a name yet, so any suggestions? My mom wants to name her something "musical" but we haven't thought of anything good yet!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the name suggestions- they're both really cute! Actually, my mom decided to make this into a contest for all her little violin students and then pick the best one they come up with! (We'll see how that turns out- little five and six year olds picking names...) :) Now we have six birds, though the budgies pretty much "do their own thing" and aren't hard to take care of at all! Have any of you tried using a hairdryer to dry your birds after a bath? I heard that some birds really like it, so after Mortie's shower this morning I tried it and surprisingly he didnt' really seem to mind, but I'm not sure that he absolutely loved it. Mortie was so cute today! He was eating some treats on the floor, and Kirby flew over to get some which of course didn't go over well since they don't get along! So, Kirby was trying to chase him away from the food, so Mortie came running all the way across the room right to me to save him! It was really sweet, though I wish they'd get along! Gail, if you do decide to get another eventually, make sure it's a kind with a similar personality to your other birds and not one known for wanting to be the "king of the flock" (like green-cheeks)! I learned that the hard way getting Mortie after Kirby, since Kirby seems to think he's ten times more powerful and much bigger (which gets him into trouble)! Well, nice to hear from you all!!

Hi All, We were looking at a yellow Nape. But I have changed my mind. At this point I am going to wait. Sunni is right now, the queen so she thinks. When ever anyone hold her she is good as lond as I am not there. But just as soon as she sees me she will try to fly to me. So funny since her wings have been cliped. I had them done, because when she first got here she would hit the walls and it scared me :( She is right now screaming for me to come and get her. I think that is cute the kids naming her. Well I need to do a few things catch up later!

Jenny I didn't think mortie had any feathers on his chest if he doesn't maybe it's not a vary good idea he might get burned.
I think the names little kids come up with are really cute.

i blow dry my bird and they absolutly LOVE it! :) when i get ready in the morning and blowdry my hair, they always climb up my pants and shirt and one sits on each shoulder. they won't even be wet and they'll just sit there while i try to dry my hair. My mom's a piano teacher and her students wanted my dog to be named Jazz. Also, about getting birds wings clipped....where i live, there is like NOBODY who clips bird wings. therefore, i had to take up the skill myself. i have been clipping them now for about a year and just a week ago accidently cut a blood feather. They always say that vlood comes gushing out bu i never believed them.....how can blood come gushing out of a feather? well, i started believing when blood started spraying onto my face and clothes and hands and carpet and everyhting else nearby! well, i pulled the feather out asap and so now he's fine. if you clip your birds wings by yourself, make sure you have needle nose pliars nearby just incase

My Mom said she didn't think that either. But I guess if you say so. Thats awful. Did you think it was very bad? I would of freaked. I would be so scared for my poor bird. Good thing you knew enough to take it out yourself... I just bring my bird to the vets and they do it. Vey little money like 12 dollars. She gets so mad to wants to fly and can't. My budgie never comes out of the cage so no worry there. She has never wanted to and will not try differant foods no matter what. She never had a band on her. So she is probably from a farm. I love her and she is very beautiful, just wish she would let me pet her or at least take her out of her palace........Mean she is. But when you let her be she sings up a storm. She calls herself.Pretty gorl she says it over and over.okay well I guess I could go on and on. Bye

Redstorm1721, have you ever tryed taking your budgie into another room away from her cage and trying to teach her to step up? or getting her a climbing tree(away from the cage)? Hamlit is vary tame but still does not let me pet him he does give kisses and perches on my hand and shoulder and talks up a storm.

Courtney, I can't get near her. She will attack anyone of us. She is so scared to come out. The day we got her she pecked at us and was very upset. I have although, got her out to another cage while I am cleaning hers. She will not come to anyone. I am still trying. She is about 5 years old I think. They said that she was 6 months old when we got her?And I have had her at least 4 years? Anyway if you have more Ideas,I would love to hear!!!!!!!!!! Also she will not eat anything but seed!!!!! Isen't that boring. She is most healthy. We do get bit when moving her..I love her, she says her name and hi and sings to her hearts content. She says all this in a whistel Can't spell tonight. if your cage comes apart then you could try that to get her out. where is here cage in the house? if it's in the living room and her wings are cliped you should leave her cage door open so that she can come out if she ever wants to. and you need to get her to another room and out of her cage with you or even take her cage in the car for a minut or two.
hope this helps

Hi everybirdy! Gail, have you thought about getting another budgie as a friend for Pretty Girl? I know it's still possible that you could tame her, but not unless you have lots and lots of time to spend on it! My first budgie was not very tame since when I got her I was only about six and had no idea about what to do. Then I eventually got a second budgie and later a third, and they are absolutely wonderful to watch play together! They are waaaaay more fun this way! If you got a second budgie that was a hand-fed baby which was tame, then it would also probably help Pretty Girl get tame, at least that worked with my birds, after the first two saw the third one trying so many things and having lots of fun! My third one has also "convinced" the others to eat so many new healthy foods! It's really fun to watch how much they can learn from each other. Also, I would definitely make a climbing tree for her that she can get out and play on. Just put it close to her cage for starts with some millet on it and leave her cage door open, and soon she should come out! Once my first two budgies came out of their cage, they became less scared and it was easier to work with them. One last thing about her, when you go by her cage, I'd give her a treat and talk to her for a little bit- who knows, after awhile it would probably help. The thing about the blood feathers reminded me of this lady with a 'tiel who comes to my vet! Just SEEING a blood feather freaks her out! If it even brakes off a little and is barely even bleeding, she rushes right in to have my vet pull it! About getting a yellow nape, from what I've heard they have a huge tendency to overbond and become aggressive with other people, so i'd make sure I was extremely prepared for that and know exactly what to do to prevent it. Also, in my opinion lilac crowned amazons are terrific birds! (as well as all the other kinds, Jackie!) The ones that come to my vet are very fun, and also are less likely to overbond and become aggressive as they mature. Mortie is bare on his chest and part of his back, so I covered that part of him with a towel which he didnt' mind and just blew his head with the blower, so that he wouldn't get too hot. I also had it on low and about two feet away. An update on my new little "luv", it is so amazing how quickly she's adjusting! Already today, as soon as she saw me she started chirping, so I opened the cage and she hopped right on my finger! Now she's snuggling on my shoulder right up agaisnt my neck, and earlier was climbing up my sleeve! Last night my brother forgot to put the lock on her cage door, so she got out and I found her sitting right on the window ledge a few feet from the heating vent, all warm and comfy! One last thing and then I promise I'll be off, Friday a little girl is coming to my house with her un-tamed cockatiel for me to give advice on taming! I have lots of suggestions and ideas, but if any of you have any, I'd like to hear them! Well, bye!

Wow thanks all for the great advice. Now as far as pretty girl goes, she has never had her wings clipped. She has always stayed in her cage. I feel so bad but she never wants to come out. She flys around the cage in fear when ever I open it up for any reason. She loves to look at me and sing to me,but never go in to her territory!!!!! She is okay when she knows I am cleaning the cage. I let her out before and she hit the walls she was so scared. It scares me way to much that she will kill herself.. I feel so sorry for her. I have thought about getting another Budgie and also I have thought what if she fights with him/or her? They told us she was a she but found out she is a he!:D But she doesn't know the differance. I got her the mirror and she thinks its her best friend. She rolls the mirror over her head and sings to it and screams at it. Oh so cute. My mom feels so sorry for her saying that she should have a friend. I agree. What if they hate each other? I would really feel bad. I love my birds and feel so bad that Sunni loves to come out and play and pretty girl stays in. She watches us and plays out loud but just as soon as I try to get her she flys all over in her cage. She has panic attacks! I need to do something I know that. W/b tell me what yah think? Thanks Gail

Hi! What I'd do would be to bring her to your avian vet who can clip her wings easily, then get the playstand and leave the door open. When I first did this it took a few days for one of them to finally decide that it was ok to come out, but once one came out, the other did, and soon they were spending quite a bit of time on the playstand each day and weren't scared anymore. I'd definitely clip the wings though, otherwise Pretty Girl could certainly get hurt, or fly to some other room of the house making her impossible to get. Once she gets used to being out, then you could probably let her grow back her flight feathers if
you want. I had my vet clip my budgie's wings first, then when they finally grew back in they were tamer and used to being out and knew what things to avoid in order to stay out of trouble! (like windows!) If you got another, definitely buy a separate cage and place it right by hers until she's used to it (all the while taking the new one out and playing with it to keep it tame and also to show P.Girl how nice you can be), and then once they start getting along you could put them in the same cage, as long as its plenty big. I seriously doubt that they'd hate each other, just try to make sure the new one is used to being around others. When I got Spunky I put him straight into Little Greeny's cage, which I now think is the main reason it took them so long to finally accept each other and get along- L.G. felt him as invading her space and trying to take over, and neither had any way of escape since I hadn't started letting them out then. (Again, I was little and didn't know any better, unfortuneately!) Well, enough for now! Sorry about my last post- I had no idea that it ended up being so long!

Thanks Jenny,I will get a new Budgie and see what happens. Buying another cage is so exspensive. Prettygirl has a huge one we call it her mansion. She used to be in the kitchen and now, I put her in the same room as Sunni which is a bedroom done over to a sitting room. They love it in there its" there's" and tv and all. I have a music box and I wind it up each night before bed and I swear they are sleeping before I leave....:D Thanks Gail

04-08-2003, 03:49 PM
a new Budgie is a good idea but make sure you get a hand fed baby. Hamlit was parent raised and some times I think that if he had been hand fed he would like to be petted (it's funny but I love the feel of feathers)
good luck and tell us all about your new bird when you get it.

Jenny
04-08-2003, 06:54 PM
Hello! It'd be best to get a hand-fed baby if you can find one, but budgies can still tame down even if they aren't (as long as they're young, though). Blue wasn't hand-fed and was kept with many others, but he still tamed down quite easily. Of course though, until he was tame we kept him in a separate room so we could work with him and didn't let him even see the others, which wouldnt' be a bad idea just for afew days even if you do get a hand-fed one. I don't think too many budgies like to be petted, but I guess a hand-fed one is more likely to like it. Hamlit is really tame though and if he doesn't like it, I doubt too many would! About getting a new cage, if she/he's only goign to be in it a few days to a few weeks, then you wouldn't need a very big pricey one. All three of mine share a sort-of small cage, but their door is always open for them to get out, and at night when they do go back in as well as throughout the day, they don't mind at all. If you get a small cage and even after Pretty Girl gets to know the new one she doesn't like it being in her cage, then even if the new cage is not as large as you'd like, it's not too bad as long as you let it out alot and give it enough to do when inside the cage. (could you follow that confusing sentence?) :) That's really cute about the music box! Yesterday I turned on "oldies" for the lovebird and she started chirping away! Also, yesterday afternoon my mom was taking a nap and the bird's cage door was left open, and she made her way to my mom's bed, crawled up her sleeve, and fell asleep! She's adorable, that's all I can say! bye!

Well I started my jorney to the pet stores around here. I am not to happy with them. The parraketts and Budgies are pretty old as they have been in the stores for at least the past year! I did find some that are being hand fed right now,and am looking into them! But while I was in one place they just got in a 3 year old cockatiel. They wanted me to have her very cheap! The problem is she has been plucking! Her whole neck is bare! I feel very sorry for her as she is really a nice bird! But even with using sour apple I feel she will not stop! Her family is moving and they didnot want her. SAD! She is so lonley. I held her and she loved me right away. I don't know what to do??????? This would not be for prettygirl! What should I do??????? Gail:confused:

birdgirl
04-09-2003, 11:53 AM
Well she sounds like a nice bird and yes (as Jenny knows) some birds will never stop plucking this doesn't mean they are bad birds.
if you do get the poor Cockatiel you should still look into the hand-feeding budgies.
Hamlit is really tame but I got him before he was weaned the people at the store didn't tell me this they just said his parents were still feeding him and I wasn't thinking I mean I was there to get my first bird and really didn't hear what any one said.

The one's that are being hand fed are very cute. I just think pretty girl would be so jelous? She I don't think was handfed? She is reallt wild! LOL. She loves herself and I think there is no way she will share her cage? On another note,The cockatiel I don't think I will get? If she has any sickness I will be so upset. I really don't want my others to catch anything?

birdgirl
04-09-2003, 12:22 PM
yeah, I guess it's better not to get the Cockatiel it's a vary smart move.
one of three things will happen with pretty girl when the new budgie gets there she will eather hate it, love it or not care at all.

:D I agree! I am on my way to another pet store to see what they have. Its about an hour from here so we will see? I also have 2 dogs, and Italian greyhound and a pitbull a very loving pit who is 2 and thinks he still is a puppy!!!!!1 I love to hear all about everyones animals!1 Courtney have you looked on line for your grey? They have alot on line babys and you can get them right on line? Check it out. Gail

birdgirl
04-09-2003, 04:21 PM
yes I looked on line for 2 years but all the greys I found were eather unweaned or over $700 so finaly I found a vary good breeder only about an hour and a half away and the Timnehs are only $575 and they come D.N.A.'d.
good luck at the pet store:D
I think I found a way to get my other small bird. my parents gave me $40 for my birthday and I still have not spent it and at a pet store near me there are little baby love birds for $25 and some nice sized cages for $10 so all I have to do is get my parents to take me to the pet store and if I can poll it off I'll come home with a baby lovebird (or budgie) :) but I don't know when my dad will take me to the store Hamlit wont need food for a month or so.

They were pretty but they didnot look that good. Tailfeathers were looking yuk! So I am going to take this slow. All the handfed baby's are sold already. I can't believe it, I just went in yesterday? have you cliped pretty girls wings yet?

Redstorm1721
04-10-2003, 04:46 PM

Thats awsome!! You work at the zoo? Oh How I wish we had one here, I would volentare too. But our town is so small I had to go 2 hours away to get my new baby! She is what you call a perl. I think. She doesn't look much like a regular cocktiel. Look I am already calling her a her. How funny, maybe I can name her perl? That sounds cute? what do you think?

04-10-2003, 10:11 PM
Gail, I read your concerns about your budgie. I have 4 budgies who are housed together in one nice size cage. First, I would suggest that you remove the mirror. I have heard that mirrors make bonding with your bird very difficult. Second, please clip her wings even though it bothers you, you will find she will be much more tame and easier to get out of the cage.

Getting a companion budgie for her is a very good idea. I started with one male budgie. He looked so lonely and wouldn't come out of his cage. Then I got him a friend and they bonded quickly. A few months later we got two more, and presto, the 4 are the best of friends. Since their wings are clipped, I do allow them to be outside their cage all day as they please. They wonder in and out of their cage and go over to my Tiel's cage to play with her and share her food.

I strongly feel it is not too late nor your bird is too old. Clipping wings can be a god send....try it. Get her a companion and see how it goes, they will probably bond and have a great time. If you clip the wings, just leave the cage door open and you will see her come out and flop to the ground, don't worry, she will quickly learn that she will have to climb around the outside of the cage and will look to you to get around more.

I hope this helps.......it all worked out ok for us.

:) Thats very nice of you to take the time to talk to me about this. My husband said Okay Gail" no more birds for awhile" LOL, I am the bird lady. I would buy everyone I saw if I could. I am really bad about wanting them all. But I will say, its been a long time before we got the parrot and this new baby the cockatiel. My budgie I noticed today she was bonding with her fack bird we have in her cage? Wow that is something. she will not play with anything else but that mirror. I was affraid to get another playmate for her I thought what if they hate each other? I am really not even sure she is a budgie? My son brought her hom about 5 years ago,I then never new anything about birds much? So bonding with her i would put my hand in her cage and pet her head, after a while she hated that. I just talk to her all day and she will say PRETTY GIRL .real loud so we can hear her. She says hi and hello. I talk to my birds all the time.If I take the mirror out she will die? I feel like that. Its her best friend and she really thinks its another bird. I would have to do it the day I brought another bird in. Okay look I took up the whole page. My hubby would really think I was nuts LOL. He loves all our birds, but he said that room is becomming the bird room? Oh well. Gail

Hamlit has a mirror and has had it in his cage since the first week I got him home he likes to talk to it and give it kisses I don't think he thinks it's a real bird just a vary fun toy he likes to be out of the cage all day so doesn't even see the mirror until he goes to bed at night.
Hamlit is a singal budgie and is not unhappy at all.
yes working at the zoo is fun I worked in birds last year but I'm going to work in the childrens zoo (they have an African grey)

:) So awsome. Pretty girl really thinks her mirroe is another bird. I mean she puts her head down, and lets the mirror roll all over her head and she does this for a long time.
